FansToys FT-44 Thomas (AKA Astrotrain)

I’m so excited to get this guy, Thomas looks great, love the toon accuracy but I had the toy as a kid so I’m torn how to display him. For me I think the train mode is the better of the two alt modes. Considering it’s a triple changer they’ve done a great job as usual. I’d be interested to see if they release a toy colour variant, though I’m happy with this version.

Very nice and thorough review as always! Many thanks! It's been less than a year since I started collecting G1 MP-scale figures systematically and soon FT-44 drew my attention. I was quickly overwhelmed by how expensive it is, taking into account that I had recently obtained some great figures like TE-01 and DS-01 for a fraction of its price. But then again, I realized that this is the best Astrotrain out there and I decided to go to the next level by ordering it. Let's see!

Hi TMReviews, thanks for the review! I especially liked your solution to bring the backpack over the shoulders and plug it in. A couple of things you didn't realise or demonstrate in your review that you might like to know for the future 1. The trapezius on his shoulders for robot mode which is mistransformed out of the box, you never opened those, 2. the yellow transclearent pieces on his arms you are only meant to have them yellow for the train mode to act as a window for the cab, they rotate away for the other modes, 3. the double jointed knee can move more than 90 degrees, I think you're meant to carefully use the lower (tighter) joint first. 4. The back of the alt modes where the arms form the cab of the train with the backpack piece, you never tabbed them in properly at the end of the transformation for either of the alt modes, 5. and I'm not sure you tabbed the side of the wings in properly for shuttle mode as they're meant to go under the piece above them somewhat. 6. FT Intentionally use metallic eyes for the Decepticons, and matte eyes for the Autobots. Same as Takara. All of this is in Paik's live stream, even though he was in a rush, he still showed all of these points that you might not have realised or known about. Just wanted to share some things that could be useful for everybody to know, which I think are pretty cool features

Thanks for the video. I had a hard time with a few parts of the transformation, but got through it eventually. One of those plates that rotates from his chest down over his abs took me almost an hour to get loose. The screw on one of them wouldn't let the panel slide forward/back (10:50). Very frustrating. The figure is pricey, but has good weight and size to it, and looks great on the shelf.

I finally got this figure to myself. It really looks nice in all forms and I am amazed how cartoon accurate the shuttle mode looks like. Some liberties were clearly taken with the locomotive form's design, but it still looks pretty similar to the cartoon design. So the engineering of this figure is top-notch. The only problem I have with it are its knee joints; because how they have been aligned the robot leans either too much forward or too much backward, and I just cannot get it to stand straight. The lower joints are also stupidly tight which makes the transformation into a shuttle a little frustrating. Nevertheless, it is the best Generation 1 Astrotrain figure ever made, and definitely worth having.

@Terminator Sorry it isn't for you but me personally it is perfect and I prefer their interpretation to being a slave to a poor cartoon design which was based on the limitations of the toys of that decade. I was a child of the 80's and loved the show but I can't stand all of the purists that pray at the alter of the limitations of both the toys and the weak art of that era. I think the train mode is a work of art and I bet my opinion will be shared by many.

@Terminator ha ha, I guess we're going in two different directions here. I actually loved the length of the locomotive. It was way too short for my tastes as a kid. I think the longer look better reflects real trains and just looks cool. I had the original toy as a kid too but man this look to me is so much better. I like the cartoon but I preferred the way they used to do MP's when they went with a more realistic alt mode vs. cartoon simplified. I also prefer having the bot modes with added detail. I wish they didn't over simplify a lot of these designs to be super locked to the cartoon.

Great video! Really like the look of all three modes Thomas had. To be honest, I wasn’t into the shuttle mode because of how it looked. But because it is animation accurate, I can let it slide (and it is a triple changer; at least one mode might suffer from that and, thankfully, it’s not so bad). The train mode is definitely a great alt mode. A lot of work was put into it. And Thomas looks really nice, too. Really digging the robot mode. I wish I can get this guy, but he is already sold out and I have other Fans Toys figures on preorder (I just hope Deadend is available for preorder again). On other notes, I do wish he had an ab crunch, but it’s not a big deal breaker. Most of my collection don’t have that feature. And, considering he’s a triple changer, it was expected. The back looks fine. Not that clean, but not a big mess like others I’ve seen. From what see here on how this guy looks and moves, I’m looking forward to how Blitzwing turns out.

Have had him for about a week now and I think he is nigh perfect. All three modes look really good (shuttle mode being the weakest imo) and once you've transformed him once he's not that bad to flip back and forth really. One of my favorite figures in my collection, right next to Roadking and Quietus T. Can't wait for Berserk after handeling this guy. Thanks for the review, keep going strong!

I dont know.... Thomas never did it for me and im a huge astrotrain fan. It’s the head sculpt. The back of the legs look a little empty also. I’m going to continue to hold out for something better.

I was Really into this figure, until seeing it is smaller then Megs and Prime. My memories of AT is a bit bigger then Megs. Same issue with Takara Shockwave which I won't buy. Besides the size I believe this figure is really nice, I do agree the Head and Face are a bit off...Nice but NOT current $300 nice, but thats another story. Thanks for the Great Review as always TM.

@@TMReviews hey man I'm glad you like it. This isn't how I envision AT's face. I feel like it's lacking like others spoke about Tesla's face not being accurate. But deeper than that is I wish lacking articulation didn't bother me as much as it does. I hate feeling that people will pay top notch price for a figure without even what I consider basic articulation. Trying to pose a figure without an ab crunch makes it feel unfinished and you lose so much posability from not having it. Fans toys almost always kills me with leaving off articulation but the fans toys boys are just like it sells for more, so... It doesn't matter... Is how it comes across. I wish more people agreed with me but they don't. It's a serious topic to me but being that everyone else is fine with lacking articulation it seems I have no choice but to accept it. But I really want that nearly perfect AT he's my second favorite character of all time, I just wanted an ab crunch. It's bringing out my OCD and autism I guess.

I loved my Thomas, but what's been going on with scalpers and resellers for the ppl who don't is so disgusting it has made me consider to leave the hobby altogether. Not sure if it's valid but the disgust has also transferred a bit to Fanstoys in a way that I can't see my other figures in the same way

This guy is a huge letdown for me mainly because no ab crunch which ruins the experience for me. Paik's figure broke on him during first transformation. I think I'm just losing interest in the hobby altogether because these companies are too busy making figures wrong to replace them later with higher priced figures. Plus, need to stop paying China anyway.
