What is amazing about the second part of the fugue, is that the theme consists of nothing but six accending notes of the minor scale. If most composers were asked to write a fugue on such a theme, they would look at you like you were insane. But Bach! The creator of music's Old Testament. For Bach, it's "stand back!". lol

I can only feel the need to release my sorrows and pains. So beautiful. Comforting. Thank you mr Elgar.

FYI: at 7:54, Bach introduces a fugal theme consisting of a very simple rising series of 6 notes in the minor scale. This is actually a tribute by Bach to the music of the Medieval period, and a technique known as a hexachord. To use a musical technique that was ancient even in Bach's time just goes to show much Bach appreciated "old" music.

Breath taking. Elgar has like all of us taken inspiration from the master of Baroque. Bach is so adaptable in his music.. Love it.

I agree strongly!!! Alot of Bach's works and fugues work very well with all kinds of instruments. I've listen to alot of his great works originally written for piano/organ and when they're transcribed to full orchestra, vocals, woodwinds, brass, they breathe new life! This is Bach's genius!

Quanto Bach è universale! Pensare che questo brano così moderno è stato composto nel 1700!

Beautiful!!!! Indeed, Bach's piece becomes a thing of glorious beauty when transcribed to the orchestra.... I agree that we should have more transcription of his pieces....

I love Elgar's music & his enthusiasm, but with this orchestration the piece has lost the baroque style & the piece has lost "Bach" unfortunately. It's a "crossover". It's too romantic. There are too much opened emotions in this performance. What's this ending from 9:39 and what about this (french) trill at 3:28 ? Bach have to be a mystery. p.s.: sorry for my english!

@sAmfRancIs94 You're absolutely right! People demands more recordings for J.S. Bach orchestral transcriptions, because there is abudant library of those available.

Effective but empty. Beginning is good, but conclusion is tasteless. More appropriate could be instrumentation for homogeneous group of instruments (for strings only or for wind instruments only).

This is rather an illustration of how to play Bach is not necessary in any case! this is Wagner with Saint-Saens, but not Bach...
@nymusicman12 жыл бұрын
This piece was extremely well performed and Bach is an absolute genius. However, I can stand overly flamboyant conductors. I get there is a bit of a show to put on, but not at the expense of the orchestra. My goodness, on that last note, how many times was he going to wave is arms for a one note hold? There is absolutely no reason to continue counting the beats on the last note. Even if he did want to count the beats, it could have been more timid than 3 strokes that could have ended the piece.
@tangascootac8 жыл бұрын
Take a look at the score and see what's actually occurring during that "one note held," because you plainly have no idea what's occurring and why the conductor maintains a pulse throughout.

It is a Romantic transcription, not a straight baroque orchestration.
