The first 89 bars of the work were composed by Bach in Weimar, but the last 41 bars were composed by J.L. Krebs just after Bach's death in 1751. This fact explain the da capo form of this fugue (just as the mature "wedge" fugue BWV 548): it was the very best solution that the pupil could find to finish this early fugue of his great master. This explain why the themes are never combined as one would expext from Bach: he left the fugue unfinished and it was completed some decades later by his very best pupil.

FYI: that odd 6 note ascending theme that suddenly appears in the middle of the fugue is an amazing throwback to a Middle Ages musical technique called the hexachord. Simply the first six notes of either a major or minor scale. So what Bach is doing is combining an ancient pre-Renaissance musical form and state of the art Baroque counterpoint. The real question is why? Did Bach hear something while he was constructing the fugue that made him think of the hexachord? And why right in the middle of the fugue, bookended by the original fugue theme? I guess we will never know.

Like Wiersinga, this has long been a great Bach favorite of mine - both to hear and play. I prefer to play the Fantasia "bigger," using manual Principals 8' 4' 2' / pedal Principals 16' 8' 4' - but it works quite well here with quieter 8' and 4' voices, as well. And I think his tempos and phrasings, etc. are just right. We really do hear some great sadness expressed in the first movement, perhaps after Bach had lost one of his children or a wife. (?)

The consensus dating of this piece is 1723, three years after Bach had returned from a long voyage to Bohemia to find his wife dead and buried. Tragedy would not spare Bach as in later years seven (!) of his children died, and two close relatives who lived in his house. And let's not forget that at the age of ten he had lost both his parents.

It is called a "Picardy third". Some music is written that way. It is a type of borrowed chord. It can be found in choral music as well. I think William Bryd's vidimus stellam is a good example. Can also be found in a handful of BWVs like 887....
