It is now just a little over 50 years since Gordon Jacob's Fantasia was composed. A real 'tour de force' or more commonly known as standard repertoire for the euphonium today. This work still represents a major milestone in serious repertoire for the instrument and is often required at School, University and Military Band auditions as a prerequisite.
For the performer on this recording Dr. Matthew van Emmerik, this work still holds an important milestone in his career, as this was the requested piece for his initial and successful audition (over 20 years ago) and career as the principal euphonium player with the Central Band of the Royal Air Force (UK)
Recorded exclusively on the Shires Q41 Large Bore Euphonium (silver plate, no trigger) with a 'van Emmerik Signature 4G/3G Mouthpiece'
This version is performed 'as written' in the original published version, there has been extensive research showing original changes that were never published in various areas including the cadenza, however this version does not include those changes.
Gordon Jacob composed his Fantasia for Euphonium and Concert Band in 1969. It received its Première in May that year, performed by Michael Mamminga and a freelance Wind Band in London conducted by Denis Wick.
American euphonium player Michael Mamminga commissioned Gordon Jacob to write the work during a year studying abroad in the UK on a fulbright scholarship following the completion of his Masters Degree from the University of North Texas.
