♫FANTASM SOLDIER/FRASH OF SWORD (Valis) SNES Arrangements - NintendoComplete

Here are a couple of arrangements of tracks from Telenet's 1986 game Valis: The Fantasm Soldier (Mugen Senshi Valis/夢幻戦士ヴァリス). They have been arranged for native playback on SNES hardware, and the audio was recorded directly from a launch-model SNES deck.
The first track, "The Fantasm Soldier," is the game's title theme. The second (at 1:38), "Frash of Sword," is the BGM from the first stage. I based these arrangements primarily on the CD remixes that were created for the 1992 PC Engine remake of the first Valis game. The soundtrack is good no matter which version you're playing, but the PCE version is my easily my favorite of the bunch.

Awesome remix! This series is so underrated. I'm really only familiar with the Genesis version, but I've often heard that the PC Engine CD version is the definitive Valis experience.

Exquisite. Mad props for the fact that you clearly didn't take the cheap route by lifting everything from Valis 4. Gotta say: crisp as the NES music was, the MSX BGMs blew the NES out of the water, (DMC notwithstanding), but! The SNES was just... whole new dimensions of audio.

Thank you very much! 😀 That's exactly how I feel about lifting entire sample sets, too. It feels cheap. I believe the only samples in this that I recycled from another game were the guitars. They're from the Afterburner arcade game. I love the SNES's audio. It has a lot of limitations, but it has just enough oomph to pull off some really cool stuff.

Valis is such a underrated series. Sometimes when getting in conversations about retro games some people will ask "What is valis?" -_- Heart breaks everytime, we need to get the word out there! Except for "X" that doesn't exist...nope.

These are some great SNES covers 👍 There are very few people who can make very good use of the soundchip and make quality music. I don't consider myself a fan of the SNES sound format because of how choppy the sound blending between different pitch sounds are. It doesn't give the music the fluidity, that smoothness I'm used to hearing from yamaha chips. On top of that, I think It's primarilly comprised of samples, so that adds to it.

Nice arrangements. I'm STILL waiting for my Valis Collection titles (Switch) from Limited Run after over a year as I'm typing this. But I do have my copy of Valis 3 (Genesis), Renovation Collection cart (Evercade), and repros of the TurboGrafx CD titles, and of course, Super Valis 4 (Super NES).

Thanks! Oh really? I didn't buy the second collection, but I got the first one for Switch a long time ago. I wonder what the hold up is. If you ever get tired of waiting, you could download them in the meantime and emulate them. They work fine in ryujinx.

It's a run-of-the-mill 80s/90s magical girl isekai setting. But yeah, it predates Sailor Moon or Magic Knight Rayearth by few years.

​​@@PrekiFromPoland Valis is often assumed to have been inspired by Genmu Senki Leda: Fantastic Adventure of Yohko, but is actually a game adaptation of a hobby novel. (retroactively titled Alone in the Rain)

I think the first Valis arrived in 1986. The first Sailor Moon TV episode was in 1992.

Excellent. The Sega Genesis did metal better than the SNES, but the SNES did many other things better. When you put Mega Man X audio in a Genesis it turns it up to 11.

Ah the classic valis series. Not the best games ever made but fun and nice soundtracks. Still have my valis1 and 3 genesis carts and the renovation cartridge for evercade cuz why not. Lol

Those are both great on the Genesis. (Syd of Valis, not so much.) Have you played the PC Engine version of the first one? It's a really nice upgrade.
