Fantastic Beasts Composer James Newton Howard Exclusive Interview

Stefan Pape from HeyUGuys interviews movie composing legend James Newton Howard at the Royal Albert Hall the day before the European Premiere of J.K. Rowling's Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them.
In November 2017 James will be performing some of his most famous pieces at the world famous Royal Albert Hall and we got to chat with him about what people can expect.
James has scored over 150 movies, has 8 Academy Award nominations and has written music for the likes of King Ralph to Primal Fear to Nightcrawler to The Hunger Games.

Great interview! He's my favourite composer of all time and I was thrilled when they announced him for "Fantastic Beasts" Found it especially funny when he talked about seeing the film and regretting to not have used a theme more and stuff, because I actually think he should have used the big choir theme heard in "Tina Takes Newt In" more...this sounds really like an appropriate "Umbrella Theme" to this series that could be its own "Hedwig's Theme"...really hope he was talking about that one Also props to you for conducting this interview! Compsoer interviews are often very boring when done by general movie sites, since most don't really care about filmmusic if it's not Williams, Zimmer or some hip rock-musician which results in the same boring questions, but you really knew how to make an interesting conversation out of it! Very well done! You even got him to crack a joke...never saw JNH crack a joke :D

I think this is his primary weakness as a composer, his themes are beautiful but the way they are used in the picture make no sense sometimes and there's too many themes, I think this is where someone like James Horner just to give an example would have probably written 3 themes maximum for the film and maybe 1 other smaller motif. JNH is great at writing themes and motifs but his intuition seems to be to randomly place them throughout the movie with little no context and to have that many themes in one movie overcrowds it. I feel like John Williams would have done a better job of consolidating and using 3 or 4 themes and smaller motifs in more clever ways. Jerry Goldsmith would have probably had 3 or 4 themes too if he were scoring this.
