Part of the problem was JK Rowling herself, for believing that she could become a screenwriter just because she was a writer. The way all three films were paced felt more like books. Overly plotted for film, too many characters, too much backstory, too much everything. I'm not saying being a screenwriter is more difficult, it is equally difficult as being a writer, but you can't be an architect just because you're already an engineer. JK Rowling is a talented person, no question about it, but she has to understand her limits.

I agree. Though I think that Mikkelson is far more suitable for the role when considering what kind of person Grindelwald is, Depp left his mark and cannot be cast aside. The fact remains that, if Mikkelson had been cast from the beginning, no-one would have batted an eye. Depp, however, is too charismatic for his own good and made the role his own. That cannot be replaced.

@@b16gav75 Depp didn't really leave much of a mark on Grindelwald. He did a good job, but his performance as Grindelwald wasn't anything iconic. How do you know how things would have been if Mikkelsen had been cast as Grindelwald from the beginning? For all you and I know, and based on his performance, Mikkelsen could've played a great Grindelwald from the start of the FB franchise, and helped to make the movies better. Depp was charismatic as Grindelwald, but so was Mikkelsen. And the fact remains that Mikkelsen's performance as Grindelwald was praised by critics, who said he did a better job than Depp. So, guess a replacement did happen.

I'm frankly surprised that almost none of the main characters (Newt and Tina, mainly) had any reaction to the prospect of another world war. You'd think they'd have *something* to say about it or some way to feel about it after defeating that fire monster (or whatever that was). But, nope, it's entirely brushed off in the face of the fact that the protagonists have the blood pact and that they're taking it to Dumbledore so he could destroy it, and then fight Grindelwald. I fucking hate that.

3:16 After seeing all of that, it's no wonder Grindelwald was able to rally so much support at first. Muggles outnumber wizards at least ten to one and major upheavals in one world affects the other; the First World War was already devastating enough and the prospect of a second, even worse one with even more terrifyingly destructive technology would frighten even the most Muggle-friendly wizard. I see this scene as an allegory for modern day fears over World War III; recall what terrible, terrible acts it took to end the last one and then imagine what it might take to end the next one.......

Alright, a single wizard flies up and turns it into a popsicle, or worse, redirects it back. They don't play by same rules. They have indestructible things that not even magic can penetrate, they have trinkets that allow them to time-travel. I don't think an "anti gun" spell be too difficult to figure out. The best part of this whole thing is that Grindlewald is *right.* Muggles are literally as he says they are, power-lustful and arrogant. Wizards are arrogant in their own way, and some are power-lustful. But the vast majority of Wixen are very “i just wanna live in blissful peace”. Why? Because Wizards don’t need to harm others to stave off privation. To get the resources they require they need only their magic. Sure some people need to produce food, but very, very few. That food can be ultimately distributed infinitely through magic. Other than that, no manual labour is required, magic solves almost all problems. This results in Wixen being very content with themselves. What would they need with stealing land and resources? Their land they can just make through dimensional enlarging, resources can almost always be transfigured temporarily or whatever. Even if some of these things dont apply (like a gold money system etc). For the most part, Wixen society has been stable for a long time, *but* it has been stagnant also. Muggles (who I’ll just call mundanes) this does not apply. They do not have an innate ability to offset manual labor. This means they need to create machines. (Machines being defined as anything that extends, improves, or automates manual labor). Anything from a basic pulley system, to a plot pulled by oxen. This requires more space and more resources. Those resources need themselves labor to extract and refine which requires people or more machines. This results in exploitation almost always. Even compensated exploitation. (I’m not using ‘exploitation’ as a moral term, simple a ‘I get something out of you’ thing, purely mechanical). This exploitation gives rise to temptation of power always. Those who can get a large amount of land and people under their control can exploit a larger amount of resources for themselves. This way of operating for thousands of years of human existence has hardwired us to view progress, expansion, and resource gathering this way. Wixen simply don’t think the same way. They want something? Almost always their innate magic can do it without needing to exploit someone else. And if they do it is almost always on a tiny scale. Even those exploitations are based on magic themselves. Like if you want a magical tent with internal space expansion, but don’t know the advanced magic required to create it, or the time. You can find someone who is specialised in this and purchase one from them. (This is why an economy is required even in Wixen society, no one can know every piece of magic to the degree necessary to create every magical entity) this trade is required. But it’s all based on the magic itself, or more broadly, knowledge. One person has the magical knowledge to create very complex magical objects, can produce them, and sell them to others who need them. It almost never requires outright exploitation of labor like in mundane societies. Leaders don’t need to be power hungry because of simply how easy it is for *everyone* to get everything they need with very little effort. Thus it’s just a hard fact that mundane and magical society *are* fundamentally different and based on different principles. This is a major foundation that begins to explain Grindlewald’s point. Secondly, recall how I mentioned how magical society is stagnant? The reason is actually their strength. Because they have magic for everything, they see no reason to change their ways or adapt or progress for efficiency. To them, they have all the efficiency they need to be satisfied. They don’t see “more as better” as a universal rule. They’ve always existed with having whatever they need. They see no need of massing more and more. (Except for pristine but that’s about cultural reasons like Pureblood shit which isn’t important to this). Because of this, magical society has remained socially and culturally the same almost forever. Only huge things like goblin wars have resulted in any change, and even then just political ones. This is where the major divergence in mundane society deviates. Because of mundane’s hardwired cultural/social background, efficiency, gathering more, expanding more, is always the sign of progress. Progress is the key. Without it, they’d still be hunting and gathering. Thus they are always pushing, always moving, never just content. Always needing to get more, make more, invent more. Thus they always exploit more, exploit people, exploit resources, etc. Grindlewald is saying that this is the core of mundane existence. He describes it as ‘barbarity and powerlust’ but I think I described it better. Their ways are inherently destructive and encroaching. Thus his “how long till they turn their weapons on us?” Line is far more than a fear-mongeirng statement, it is true. Due to the very nature of mundanes, if(actually when) they find magical existence, they will immediately begin exploitation as they will see magic as just another resource to enrich their society. Mundane society/culture is hardwired, they’d take magic/magicals and use it to feed *their* resource expanding process. This is inevitable. Magicals at the time of Grindlewald (and even into Harry Potters time) say stuff like “Pfft, muggles are so weak compared to us, they pose no threat” but that is the trap. That is the core flaw which spells their doom. Magical culture has been isolated from mundanes since the 1600s. Imagine even a magic Wixen against even an entire army of 1600s fighters. Some basic spells and the Wixen would win. This superiority complex is based on this paradigm. Even all these years later, the social consensus is that magicals are just so much more powerful than mundanes that they simply pose no threat. And that may actually be true in this video IN Grindlewald’s time. If for some reason magicals were discovered during Grindlewald’s time, even without Grindlewald, the magicals would stand a good chance of winning because the mundanes just aren’t technologically advanced enough. But that’s *now.* What of tomorrow? Ten years from now? A hundred? Due to the very nature of mundanes, they progress. Eventually, by literal definition, they *will* surpass the point where magicals will be able to defend themselves from them. Similarly, they will surpass a point where magicals will be able to hide. Even in Harry Potter’s time, it is becoming harder and harder to keep magicals hidden. Constant obliviate squads are set out *every day* to cover up constant exposures to magical phenomena. Plus space available for magical enclaves is shrinking. They have to squeeze themselves into mundane cities and isolated areas that will eventually be expanded into by mundanes. So, it is inevitable that mundanes *will* both discover and be able to exploit/defeat/exterminate magicals as they wish due to their nature as progressions vs the magical nature of stagnation. Grindlewald is trying to preempt this eventual confrontation by acting first. In his mind, magic is sacred, it provides everything mundanes have created this exploitative system to do anyway. Magicals have a more stable, prosperous (based on actual individual contentment, not material/resource possession) society. Thus, instead of waiting around for mundanes to discover then exploit magicals to fuel *their* exploitive system, magicals should do it in reverse, strike and take over mundane society to force the boons of magical society onto the mundanes. Sure Grindlewald does want personal power, he probably believes that magicals are superior because of the (in his eyes) negative nature of mundanes. But his ideology is consistent and factual. If he won I believe the world would be better off than the industrialised hellscape mundane society(our society) seems to be heading towards.

Your argument is interesting, but it does contain a couple of flaws: 1. I don’t buy that most Wizards are less ambitious/power hungry than their muggle counterparts. If that was true, then the entire story of the Deathly Hallows wouldn’t exist. 2. It is 100% clear that many wizards, even the good ones, look down on muggles and see themselves as superior. Not only is this fact debatable, but it nevertheless reveals a level of arrogance and ignorance in the wizard community. 3. To say that muggles would ‘exploit’ magic may be true, but the wizard community also exploits it as well. Even the most poor wizards lives much more fulfilling and happy lives than their muggle counterparts. They 100% use magic for their own benefit, even at a societal cost. 4. Innovation and progress are not inherently bad or good. Yes, we have developed terrible weapons of war and new systems of oppressions, but we have also created the ability to talk to people around the globe instantaneously and cure diseases that once killed millions. Overall, wizard’s ruling the world in Grindelwald’s vision would be bad for mankind. It would essentially become a stagnant, extremely hierarchical and apartheid society, where muggles are never allowed to have the same opportunities or resources as wizards

Airplanes are Superior to brooms by far and Mustard gas was more terrible and more effective than any curse. But the idea of a second world war so closely to the first one was really Insane. WW1 was perceived by many as "the war that will end all wars". What would be interesting is if the Nuking of Japan actually took out part of the Japanese wizard world unintentionally. In Hiroshima or Nagasaki there was either a massive part of the wizard world or even worse, the Japanese wizarding school. But when the bomb dropped it took the place out along with everyone in it. The reason it went unnoticed by the muggles is because at that point there were just ruins and corpses so everything just blended together. So the didn’t notice anything or think twice, but tge Wizards were *horrified* with what happened and realized what Grindelwald was trying to say… Humanity’s inability to use magic doesn’t make them inferior, it just lets them find new ways to obtain unimaginable power.

This Grindelwald, Jonny Depp's depiction of Grindelwald, is what grows from its original depiction. When he was cast, he was still in the shadow of those overwhelming, unjust, aberrant accusations. Now his casting is seen as greater, charismatic, entrancing. I only hope the final chapter of Grindelwald's movie story encompasses both Mikkelsen and Depp. Let the rules of the universe's magic allow both to play the role simultaneously.

You can’t help but compare Grindelwald to Voldemort even though they’re very different. Grindelwald saw his fellow witches & wizards as his equals & wished to liberate them. He also didn’t hate muggles & didn’t love killing so much Voldemort, on the other hand, hated muggles, looked down on his fellow witches & wizards & wanted to rule of all of them. & he pretty much loved killing
@princeytron
@princeytron 7 ай бұрын
Yeah the differences in their ideology is very interesting. Grindlewald saw magic itself as the determining factor of supremacy. He saw that the very fact magic chose someone to bestow itself on as proof of that person’s superiority. Thus it has no baring if they are born to muggles or to half bloods or anything else. His ideology was simply magic-supremacy. The idea that Wixen are inherently superior and deserve to rule because they have magic. It’s a clear Muggle/Wizard divine, clear cut, one vs the other. Thus it has wider impacts. He sought to subjugate the entire muggle population. His plans encompassed the entire world, both magical and not. Voldemort however looked down on and hated muggles, yes. But he was also largely dismissive of them. He had no care for the muggle world. In his ideal society, magicals would be completely separate from the muggle world, no mixing at all. Muggleborn babies would be taken from their muggle parents and the parents memories wiped. The magical babies would be raised in the magical world. No muggle-magical interaction. His discrimination was focused within the magical population and based on Pureblood philosophy of magical lineage. So while he saw Magicals as superior, he clearly much more clearly cared for *which* magicals are superior over others. Muggles are not even people to him, little more than chattel. Muggleborns are people, yes, but the lowest of people. Akin to an Untouchable in India or a Jew in Nazi Germany. Sure they can live, but always at the lowest station to show their place. If you compare the two sides, Grindewald is objectively the most destructive as he sought to infect/impress his will on everyone, magical or not. Whereas Voldemort wanted the Muggle world utterly separate and irrelevant to Wixen. So even if Voldemort completely won, the Muggles would be largely left alone except to sometimes serve as sadistic entertainment for him and his followers. But he had no grand visions for the muggle world itself, just the magical. But living under Voldemort was horrific and Grindlewald would have provided a better society. Grindlewald for all his faults at the very least was an idealist with an actual ideology he hoped to bring forth. He had a vision for the world. He had a coherent plan for governance and society etc. Voldemort as is clearly shown is almost entirely concerned with personal domination and power. He truly is the most selfish creature possible and only cares for his own survival and power. He would happily allow every Pureblood to die if it gave him something he wanted. He may care superficially about this cause but truly he cares almost entirely on his own selfish whims. Thus he is far worse because he is far less mature and more dangerous right? Cuz at least Grindewald had a worldview and would presumably not cross certain lines if it contradicts with his world goal. For example he didn’t want to eradicate muggles because he saw Wixen ruling them as better for everyone, muggles included. Voldemort would happily exterminate any group in the world if he felt he’d get something personal from it. Out of them both, Grindewald is the most effective and overall destructive. But Voldemort is the worst by far just due to how he is as a person. At least in my opinion.

What I keep wondering is what happened to all those kids that Barebone woman had kidnapped " adopted".

Now please correct me if i am wrong. It was this speech that John jumped on this part? Forget everything that happened, and listen closely to the words he is speaking.. He truly ment them, even if it is a movie 🦋😇🧸😘

Say what you want about the movies and their plot (though FB1 was legitimately awesome) but the acting and characters in this series just hit right.

so to boil this down into one sentence: the heroes of this series are actively fighting to ENSURE the holocaust happens.

what? no. his plan would have been ten times worse than that. earlier in the movie they blast some muggles, and grindelwald's like "we need to spare a few of them". he acted out of magical supremacy, and thought he deserved to be an absolute dictator because he had magic.

@@godemperorofmankind3.091 So? Him wanting to be on top doesn't change the fact that the heroes did fight to ensure the holocaust happens. Nothing was done about WW2 and the only one, who tried to stop it, was portrayed as the villain. An awful story and poor attempt at deflecting the "Why didn't the Wizards stop WW2" criticism.

@@MrBell-iq3sm 1. they dont know for sure whether or not to trust the obviously evil supervillain's warnings 2. grindelwald is planning something worse. 3. wizards made a decision centuries ago not to interrfere in muggle affairs because doing that would reveal their own presence and potentially start a muggle vs wizard war. 4. wizards can't police human affairs forever and you shouldnt want them to. how long before they start abusing their new power? did you know that Voldemort could take over the entire goddamn world with two spells in a few hours and NOTHING would be able to stop him except other wizards? apparate and imperio. this problem has come up with eternals. people demand eternals do all the work for us, and protect us from ourselves. but how far would that go? 5. there's dark wizards arising all the time, so they simply have their own shit to deal with and cant constantly be worrying about muggles.

This scene is why I like Grindelwald over Voldemort. I've always felt that Voldemort is the weakest part of the series. Tom Riddle is a cartoon character, a snake faced and dark cloaked evil wizard who wants to subjugate the world. He has no rhyme or reason for doing this other than a feeling of superiority. Grindelwald articulates himself in ways that Voldemort does not. He's more complex, dynamic. Charming and personable to a degree. The best villains are the hero's of their own story.

To be fair, everyone in the HP series is a cartoon character.
