Hey everyone! Welcome to another installment of Harry Potter theory. In this video, we’re going to be discussing the infamous Grindelwald, or more specifically- his 8 most powerful spells & abilities.
We first see Grindelwald on screen in Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, which premiered in 2016. 2 years later, he showed up on our screens once again with Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald.
Grindelwald is THE dark wizard of his time, preceding Voldemort as the quintessential ‘dark’ presence in the world, intent on challenging all notions of light, and embracing all aspects of darkness. He is widely considered by many to be the second most powerful dark wizard of all time, second to only Voldemort. Though, the notion that he’s second to Voldemort is challenged by some who believe that Grindelwald is the ultimate force of darkness. Anyway, we’ll save that discussion for another video.
What made Grindelwald so dangerous was his ability to effortlessly conjure magic that other wizards couldn’t even dream of producing. The films (so far) have just given us a taste of what he’s capable of, and in this video I’m going to be discussing his top 8 most powerful spells and abilities- or at least the ones that we know about so far. I’m sure that as the films progress, we will see more and more insane magic from him. Particularly as we are yet to witness the fabled duel between Dumbledore and Grindelwald, which eventually brings an end to Grindelwald’s reign of power.

I think grindelwald is more powerful than Voldemort. Despite being old, imprisoned for decades and weaponless Grindelwald was able to easily protect himself against Voldemort’s attempts of getting inside his mind. Also the books make it quite clear that Dumbledore is more powerful than Voldemort, but whenever Albus is compared with Grindewald they are considered essentially equals. Dumbledore says they where nearly as powerful as each other but he was “a shade more skillful” than Grindewald.

Despite Dumbledore possessing the Elder Wand he always avoided direct confrontation with Voldemort, for almost 30 years. Despite that if Dumbledore defeated Voldemort than the great war would be over. BUT he had no problem facing off against Grindelwald despite the later possessing the Elder Wand. 2. In the books Dumbledore states that he would not be capable of holding off Voldemort for long in their duel, also in the Books in less than 2 minutes Voldemort forces Fawkes, Dumbledore's phoenix', to intercept a curse that would kill Dumbledore. 3. It is never stated which of the 2 is more powerful, despite that in the books it is hinted, by Dumbledore himself, that Voldemort pushed the boundaries of magic in ways that Dumbledore did not think it was possible. 4. Grindelwald was chasing the Resurrection Stone in order to create an army of inferi, Voldemort created one without it. 5. Dumbledore admits he was a "shade more skillful' than Grindelwald but he NEVER says the same in regards to Voldemort, he actually says the opposite.

@@wizzi11able You seem to completely disregard the fact that is explicit that Dumbledore was the only wizard Voldemort with all his horcruxes still feared. And this is vs old Dumbledore. You also seem to forget Dumbledore almost "killed" Voldemort (he wouldn't really die because horcruxes) in the ministery of magic. And the reason Dumbledore was not adamant about facing Voldemort directly was because he was tracking the horcruxes, and I say adamant because it is untrue Dumbledore avoided Voldemort, they simply didn't met after Voldemort's school time and Dumbledore didn't took an active role in pursuing him, Dumbledore is headmaster of a school, in the first year of Harry school Voldemort played hide n seek, he only attacked Hogwarts directly after Dumbledore's death, that says a lot for someone who had many horcruxes. Maybe you should re-read the books. Btw in the books that Water Sphere Dumbledore conjured? Voldemort simply apparated out of it, also in the books Dumbledore is cornered between 2 spells, a fire snake and a Killing curse that Voldemort casted after aparating BEHIND him and Fawkes has to die to save him. @@ruibenevides Voldemort and his Death Eaters were terrorizing the wizarding world and dismantling the Order of the Phoenix with basically zero direct opposition from Dumbledore until the events of Godric’s Hollow. Dumbledore also had no ideia about the Horcruxes at this point in time. Why should Voldemort seek out Dumbledore when he WAS WINNING? Didnt Dumbledore went after Grindelwald in a foreign country and fortress? He could make himself invisible without an invisibility cloak. Dumbledore generally came and went as he pleased unnoticed, and had contacts throughout the wizarding world who could surely have directed him to Voldemort’s lair. So even these ideas that he was “waiting for the right moment” or “Voldemort was afraid to face him” don’t really hold a lot of water. There were just too many ways for Dumbledore to get in front of Voldemort, not the least of which is, he had Severus Snape spying on the Dark Lord

I think Grindlewalds natural ability to wandlessly use magic is pretty impressive as a power, I mean even without the elder wand while disguised as Graves he just waves his hand and throws people around, did it to Newt, did it to pull Credence out of the way of the train, threw a shockwave which ripped apart traintracks with a wave of his hand and literally threw a car at Tina, all just by waving his hand.

Voldemort is considered to be the most powerful dark wizard of all time. Although if we look at Grindelwald in the book Fantastic beasts, written by Newt Scammander, from where the entire Fantastic beasts series have been taken, we get to know that Grindelwald was actually the most powerful Dark Wizard of all time. Even if we talk about power, we know how the books talk about Voldemort's feats of strength. But when we read about Grindelwald, atleast I was literally shocked to know his ability to perform the most lethal spells with just a flick. Even Dumbledore has accepted it in the books that His and Grindelwald's magical abilities and power was evenly matched, it was just that Dumbledore was a "Shade" more skillful than Grindelwald. We currently know that Dumbledore was able to defeat Grindelwald by disarming him, but their duel is still considered to be the greatest duel of all time. So we can take Dumbledore as a base to measure Voldemort's and Grindelwald's power. Now if we look at Voldemort, yes he was one of the most powerful dark wizard of all time. But in the books we see that even James and few more wizards were able to duel against voldemort and still managed to flee. That's like the biggest loophole. If you're a skillful duelist, you can't let your opponent fool you, when you already know that they're planning to kill you. Secondly, voldemort always tried to stay away from the aurors no matter what. He never tried to fight against them at all. Nd that's kinnda understandable bc he feared if somehow the aurors managed to take him down, then it was gonna be a hard time for him to come in power any sooner. When voldemort dueled a weak, dyinga and old Hogwarts headmaster, Albus Dumbledore, it's clearly mentioned in the books that Dumbledore was the one who was calm nd fearless nd he barely shed a single drop of sweat in the entire duel. Many would say that he was gonna be killed by Voldemort If it wasn't for Fawkes to come nd save him, but they don't seem to address the fact that Dumbledore wasn't dueling to defeat of kill or even harm voldemort. He was simply defending himself and Harry untill the ministry had arrived. According to the books, the elderwand seems to play very little role in making a wizard powerful. It's only perks is that it's a deathly Hollow. It's said that the one owning the elderwand is the most powerful but I doubt cze the books only contradicts the exact same statement. So it's can never be the power of the elderwand which helped Dumbledore to hold voldemort back untill the ministry had arrived. Atlast, I'd just say that if we simply go by the books. Nd ignore these biased videos made by some fanboys/girls, we'll getta know who's more powerful according to the Harry Potter series.

I agree with your take except for the elderwand part. I think having the elderwand would make your magic stronger in terms of raw power and would make casting it easier however it would do nothing if your opponent is simply better and skillful than you. ​@udaysharma8149

I bet it’ll be a really deep emotional fight, Grindelwald trying to convince Dumbledore in his cause, that they were right at first, and then Dumbledore(almost like Obi-Wan Kenobi in Epi3) only decided to fight when he sees that the good in Grindelwald, the good he cared for, was gone and he HAD to fight. I really think this will be similar to the fight between Anakin and Obi-Wan(crossing lore her lol) where it’s passionate and the pair don’t care about their surroundings and just fight, and eventually Grindelwald gets cocky and is disarmed. That’s just what I think, maybe it’ll be quick, but I think differently. Just a thought

Grindelwald was exceptionally skilled, and the wand was just a means for him to generate his power. We saw in fb1 when he was pretending to be a far weaker wizard in graves, so he had to hold back his true power, and he was using a regular wand, which wasn't his, and he was still too powerful for any aurors, and only because he was focused on the aurors Trying to capture him, could newt take him by surprise from behind. Grindelwald didn't even need a wand or use verbal spells when hw was fighting all those attacking him, or when Tina or newt fighting him 1v1.

Reasons 1) This man is NOT afraid of death 2) He never reached the level of "unspeakable evil" (aka Horcruxes) 3) He valued magical blood and was NOT evil. Most AGREE!!! I cried when knowing that Grindelwald had to stay alone in a dark cell with only a stone bed for 53 years. No sunlight and exercise at all thus his teeth were all gone and he became so frail. It’s really heart breaking to me when knowing that Voldemort’s visit was the only day when Grindelwald woke up and found that he’s finally not alone. Grindelwald protected the blood pack at all cost when escaping from MACUSA prison in the beginning of the second movie and also didn’t tell Voldemort about the elder wand showing that Grindelwald wasn’t a heartless person. He loved Dumbledore til the end. Grindelwald just wanted a world where wizards and witches could live freely and openly, where wizards and witches don’t hv to live secretly underground, where wizards and witches would not be hunted by muggles anymore. What’s so wrong with it? When the wizarding world unanimously agreed to punish Grindelwald because of the destruction he caused in Muggle world, what about those Muggles who once hunted and hurt wizardkinds? Who gave justice to those poor wizards and witches? The Sudanese girl Newt mentioned in Fantastic beasts movie 1 who was being jailed because of her magic, Harry who was being beaten and threatened by his muggle uncle and aunt since small because they saw him as a freak, all the Obscurial kids who died be4 10 forced to suppress their magic and growing up without love because of their magic, Who pity them? Muggles killed and hurt winzards and witches too! Grindelwald was just fighting against racism. He did this not only for himself but for all wizardkinds. He treated his followers nicely. Even helping the man who remanded him in the carriage to pick his wand so he wouldn’t die in the sea. Grindelwald didn’t mass slaughter muggles or destroying bridges like the death eaters did in Harry Potter Half Blood Prince 6. Why did he deserve to suffer from darkness and loneliness with only a stone bed for half a century? As mentioned in Deathly Hallow, Grindelwald even regretted what he did and realised his mistakes. Dumbledore knew it but he didn’t even visit him at all. Left him alone looking at 4 stone walls everyday of the rest of his life. How cruel! I didn’t mean that they hv to release him as he’s responsible for the destruction he had done. But considering his original intention for wizardkinds and a non heartless characteristic plus his good behaviour in prison, shouldn’t Dumbledore at least give him a visit? Love Grindelwald so much😭 but I also know that the more movies releasing, the sooner will Grindelwald heart wrenching ending come😭💔

At one time he had the majority of the wizarding community following him. He also had power in most of the wizarding world except for Great Britain while Voldemort limited himself to Great Britain.

While Voldemort is a being well deserving of sitting next to Sauron Vader and Palpatine, I personally believe Grindewald to be a more layered and likable baddy. When he speaks I admit that he makes so good points. Is he a villain? Oh sure! But he is much more complex!

Erica He is nothing like Vader. Vader is a ruined man and was manipulated into becoming palpatines servant. The one thing he wanted to do was save his wife and he eventually ended up killing her.He then had to live in his crippled body while having to think about how he ruined everything and betrayed his friends. He then was eventually reverted back to Anakin Skywalker by his son whom he cared about. He betrayed his master and saved his son then fulfilling the place of the chosen one. He then entered the afterlife as Anakin Skywalker and rejoined his old master.Nothing like Grindelwald. Palpatine is much like Voldemort because they were bred evil and could never become good.

I made my own protective dark spell! Summeliarmus. It creates purple flames that do basiclly the same thing as Protego Diabolica but just pushes enemies. But this one can be used on candles or anything flamable. and that acts like a security camera. It pushes enemies and allies are fine. Actually, I don't think number 1 is a version of Protego. It looks like Fiendfyre only tamed by Grindelwald's will. Once Grindelwald is gone the fire acts as normal Fiendfyre, only it's blue. What makes this spell amazing, is that Grindelwald has so much control over it that he can render it harmless to his allies.

Im scared of the fight happening instead because after the fight Grindelwald would have to stay alone in a dark cell with only a stone bed for 53 years. No sunlight and exercise at all thus his teeth were all gone and he became so frail. It’s really heart breaking to me when knowing that Voldemort’s visit was the only day when Grindelwald woke up and found that he’s finally not alone. Muggles killed and hurt winzards and witches too! Grindelwald was just fighting against racism. He did this not only for himself but for all wizardkinds. He treated his followers nicely. Even helping the man who remanded him in the carriage to pick his wand so he wouldn’t die in the sea. Grindelwald didn’t mass slaughter muggles or destroying bridges like the death eaters did in Harry Potter Half Blood Prince 6. Why did he deserve to suffer from darkness and loneliness with only a stone bed for half a century? As mentioned in Deathly Hallow, Grindelwald even regretted what he did and realised his mistakes. Dumbledore knew it but he didn’t even visit him at all. Left him alone looking at 4 stone walls everyday of the rest of his life. How cruel! I didn’t mean that they hv to release him as he’s responsible for the destruction he had done. But considering his original intention for wizardkinds and a non heartless characteristic plus his good behaviour in prison, shouldn’t Dumbledore at least give him a visit? Im afraid of seeing the fight as it means that the heart wrenching ending of Grindelwald will be coming soon.

It is entirely possible that the standards were raised after Grindawalds appearance. There is a writer, who says that Voldemort is the most powerful Dark Wizard off all time, so it is not a debate. If you were actually smart you would not even need the writer's words, since Dumbledore had no trouble going for a duel against Grindelwald, despite Grindelwald having the Elder Wand. But he never faced off against Voldemort in a duel for almost 30 years, despite having the Elder Wand on his side. The only time Dumbledore faced off against Voldemort was to buy time for the minister to arrive and see Voldemort was alive.

Seems like Protego Diabolica is the incantation for producing a Fiendfyre. Voldemort also summoned a Fiendfyre which took the shape of snake during the ministry atrium battle. Vincent Crabbe was unskilled, so he couldn't control the Fiendfyre and it burnt the whole room of requirements. Fiendfyre is very powerful and it can consume even a horcrux like a cake. Fiendfyre is a killing machine.
