@15Candles2 жыл бұрын
Because that's what Rowling's plan all along, this isn't WB milking the franchise, it's basically them following what Rowling wanted. Rowling has envisioned the Fantastic Beasts movie to be 5 movies since the start, she has a road map already for where the story would go. This is what happened when you're running out of source material and decided to come up new things for the movies that left off very messy at this point. It's always her rewriting stuff in that road map because of the criticism the movies had. Reminded me of GOT, once D&D ran out of source material, they both have nowhere else to go and just be like "random bullshit, let's go!!!"

If they are going the cinematic universe route, they should dedicate a solo movie to some of the characters so we give a damn about them. There are more characters in the Fantastic Beasts movies than there are in Harry Potter, and the audience don't care for any of them.

The thing about the fantastic beast franchise is that it has an identity problem. It doesn’t know what it wants to be. The first movie was about newt and his fantastic and sure they wove in the whole grindelwald storyline, but it worked and the focus was still on gathering these beasts that had escaped Newt’s case. However the story has now become about Grindelwald and Dumbledore and the whole fantastic beast element is put on the background. So basically they want to have Grindelwald be the new Voldemort and have that storyline with Dumbledore, but they started it off as Fantastic beast and want to capitalize on that name. So they sort of keep going with the beast element and Newt Scamander, but by trying to do essentially two separate storylines in one they are doing none successfully.

More on like the politics, backstabbing, choosing sides, spying on your enemies stuff, while utilizing magic. And it doesn't have to be Dumbledore as the only lead, but he will be like the center character. Jude Law is actually doing really good as a young Dumbledore. I just think they missed an opportunity to make more stories (and more money) by combining a Dumbledore story and Fantastic Beasts. Fantastic Beast could have focused more on Newt, make his character more like Indiana Jones or Chris Pratt-type-ish of character (but British). Like maybe use actor Tom Hardy or Taron Egerton as Newt. He relies more on brawn and his knowledge on Magical beasts in solving problems, but he is actually inherently good at magic. And his family keeps telling him that he is wasting his gift/ability by being a zoologist. And he goes around the world chronicling/studying powerful magical beasts, solving mysteries, like trying to discover why Dragons becoming more restless on this part of the world, etc. And he can also like make a cameo to Dumbledore story, or even appear as an ally at the end of that story.

Then last week or so Ezra was arrested and put in jail for disorderly behavior because he was drunk and was harassing patrons. Then a couple he was staying with bailed him out AND THE LITERAL NEXT DAY they filed for a restraining order(which was granted) against him including limiting his access to weapons. Why did they do this? Because Ezra broke into their room in the middle of the night and threatened to kill them then stole their wallets which had money and other info in it. Unfortunately though that isn't the worst of it because before he was arrested in Hawaii the police had to be called 10 TIMES due to Ezra's behavior. Now the heads at Warner Brothers have decided to halt any other upcoming movies with Ezra in it, and other companies are doing the same. The problem is Ezra stars in WBs new movie The Flash next year so WB has to also decide what to do about that as well. However they may not get to because next week they merge with Discovery and the new boss is David Zaszlav and isn't a jumbled mess like it was in the past. So there could be more to this story depending on what WB and Zaszlav decides to do. I'm sorry for Johnny Depp but I never liked his interpretation of Grindelwald and I didn't buy that Dumbledore could fell for some like him. I think Mads interpretation makes way more sense with the story and will have a better screen chemistry with Jude Law. Other than that, we didn't need 5 movies of this series. As a series it feels messy, boring at times, and there are too many plots and characters. It should have ended with a trilogy.

Before going to see this yesterday, my wife and I sat down and rewatched the Crimes of Grindelwald again - at least we tried to. Before the final climactic scene in the tomb that also happens to feature a massive stadium, we both lost interest and turned it off. Then we picked up the next morning to watch/listen in the car on the way to the theater. We were reminded that we had so many questions and were looking forward to finding out the answers in Secrets of Dumbledore….only to have SOME questions answered and even more new questions than before. There’s no “payoff” in this movie at all. There is no conclusion that we can happily accept - should a 4th film not be produced - and felt disappointed. The new character, Eulalie, is shoved down our throats with far too much dialogue and screen time. The actress overacted her lines and the accent a lot too - it was very distracting. All my wife and I want to know now is why Katherine Waterston was totally excluded from the main storyline and why she was replaced with this new character that brings nothing to the movie? Did they believe her relationship with Newt could distract us from the plot? Also, Newt’s brother does nothing but make a couple judgmental remarks and get captured - he was severely underused and underwritten versus the newcomer, Eulalie. I give the movie 5/10. Considering we both thought we were watching the final movie of a trilogy, we now have very little interest in seeing a 4th film. How/why they didn’t wrap this up in the massively too long runtime is beyond me. I think this one is going to flop hard for them and also force Universal to evaluate their new Florida theme park plans. (P.S. Mads Mikkelson absolutely delivered and made Depp’s performance feel like a cartoon with his stupid white eye that never existed in any literary reference.)

Just saw the movie . Trying to describe my general opinion without any spoiler type specificity: - was kind of disappointing, no, it was just disappointing in general beyond the interest to see where they were leading the storyline. Yyou need to 'really' be invested in the characters/movies to have the chance to feel satisfied by this movie. - Mads Mikkelsen brought the level of acting and character complexity up above most/all of the other actors. - There's issues with things like: ..... sudden jumps in character developments/arcs without showing any of the reasons/lead up to getting there (it's simply expected that you'd guess at that yourself on your own time), ..... emotional investment in characeters/scenes issues: they try to drum up a sense of desperation(/racing against time/being found out and closed in on/monitored as a traitor) type feelings but do it in a very 'tell the audience' not 'show' kind of way so you never really 'feel' it, it's more a case of 'look we have character A,B & C, to introduce, aren't they great? oh yeah, a war and stuff is meant to be happening too.. oh shiny thing!...'. ..... pacing issues: There's no scene/character development for it, and as soon as they get to the big event that they were racing towards then suddenly it's all about slow scenes, every character having extending time to have whole discussions while the others just stand and wait their turn. It felt fabricated and melodramatic as if that'd make up for the lack of any sense of urgency or impending doom behind it. Then it just kind of ended. - This is not a movie that emotionally grips you to believe in the emotions of the circumstances/characters in the movie, it's more like passively watching something touching near to an emotion that'd be relevant to the 'desperate' times of an impending war, before it runs straight back to trying for light-hearted character interactions/side-jokes. - They seemed to spend the most time on trying to reframe the view of Dumbledore as being a purely good/self-sacrificing/innocently motivated individual who has sucha great unrivaled understanding of everything (people/humanity/society/the 'needs' of everyone) that his omniscient, never explaining, pawn-moving strategist way of treating everyone is not only justified but to be admired. This being different from the view developed by many fans over the years of him being more of an unable to be questioned manipulator who plays with peoples actions/thoughts like a chess-master for 'the greater good,' expecting full trust, adherence to his unclear instructions, etc. Any differing views on the character are apparently meant to be deemed as being immediately proved wrong/misunderstood, all by a quick self-glorifying scene related to a animal (am trying for no spoilers), but nothing is questioned about it, everything is just 100% accepted at face value because the animal said so, without even the same confirmation questioning for this animal that happened 10 seconds ago for the other one. It all jsut feels like it was designed to be one sweeping statement about his character that clears the view of anything not positive and in not in awe of the character.

You've summed up every issue I had with this film. I still enjoyed it, but I was especially annoyed with the way things were staged, in particular the way the characters all had to be as dramatic as possible while delivering their lines, which meant that they would, at some points, be having full conversations between just the two of them while everyone else just stood around and watched. It's something that I noticed with every David Yates directed Harry Potter movie, and it makes certain scenes just feel awkward to watch. I often wonder how much this series would benefit if another director took the reigns for a movie or two.

I feel like there was this accidental build up they had which led many people to think that Bunty was just Tina in disguise (polyjuice potion). There might have been real life issues the actress had to deal with but the way they worked around it in the movie was horrible and felt so lazy. A lot of big things happens in the movie that just felt underwhelming because there was no build up to it. What was even the point of introducing nagini and flamel if they were just going to be forgotten in the 3 rd movie. Felt like they just wanted to name drop people from hp to add nostalgia and excitement but it did nothing for the plot.

@ajiththomas24652 жыл бұрын
I agree with almost everything except the "forced" Dumbledore gay romance thing. First of all, Rowling didn't reveal Dumbledore being gay in a tweet but in a Q&A a few months after the _Harry Potter and The Deathly Hallows_ book was released in 2007. At the time, British law outlawed open depictions of LGTBQ characters in media, so if those laws hadn't been in place, Rowling would've most probably have been more explicit in portraying Dumbledore as gay in the books themselves rather than only bring able to reveal Dumbledore being gay in a Q&A a few months after DH got released. Two, Rowling revealing Albus Dumbledore being gay made perfect sense to me and doesn't feel forced at all. Throughout the books, given his eccentric and flamboyant fashion sense when it comes to Wizarding robes, the mental image that many people had of Dumbledore was that he looked like Merlin but with Elton John's fashion sense and style. Three, the whole Blood Pact that makes it so that Dumbledore and Grindelwald couldn't directly fight each other, while not the most elegant of plot devices, made sense and was functional. In the books, during the King's Cross scene, Dumbledore mentions about how for years he had avoided directly facing Grindelwald throughout WWII and it was only until 1945 that he finally faced the Elder Wand wielding Grindelwald in a legendary duel that ended with Dumbledore's victory, his acquisition of the Elder Wand, and Grindelwald's imprisonment in his own prison Nurmengard. The idea of the Blood Pact at least provides an additional tangible reason why Dumbledore couldn't directly face Grindelwald and why he waited years to do so, besides the emotional baggage between the two. While it wasn't the most elegant or perfectly executed of plot devices, it was functional and provided an additional obstacle and explanation as to why Dumbledore didn't confront and defeat Grindelwald in the years before their legendary 1945 Duel. Those are the aspects of Dumbledore that I disagree with you about. The rest of your comment, I generally agree with.

I enjoyed the first movie. The nuances in character was interesting; the wonder of the creature design was fantastic. I thought Newt was a solid lead for that movie. The other three were great supports. I thought they genuinely had something. Then the Crimes of Grindewald happened. They threw out the best parts of the first movie to make room for Dumbledore, who to be honest, I don't care for all that much. On top of that, the movie was convoluted. Too much happened all at the same time. The poem was a HUGE piece of the movie, but it was only recited once in full by a character WE DIDNT EVEN KNOW! THEN QUEENIE. that whole switch was stupid, particularly because Jacob didn't follow. Everything about the first movie was shot to hell by the second. I don't understand why they made a movie establishing relatively solid characters just to throw it away with Dumbledore's personal history. The Wizarding World is HUGE. Why always bring it back to Dumbledore? he wasn't even the strongest character in those books anyway!

Fantastic Beasts isn’t a prequel to Harry Potter, it just takes place before and in the same universe, and the only known characters are Albus and Aberforth, but it has nothing to do with Harry Potter’s adventures nor with Voldemort. Speaking of Star Wars, the sequels would have been great if they focused on their own story and characters and not Skywalker and Palpatine’s return
@richardbourton4523 Жыл бұрын
The internal conflict of the fantastic beast films has very little to do with the internal conflict of the Harry Potter films (they’re obviously both about fighting the rise of evil wizards, but aren’t actually directly linked to each other). So the FB movies don’t really work as prequels to the HP movies. Which is fine they don’t have to be, they can just be set before them in the same world, sure. But they are marketed as being extensions of HP, even though they are tonally very different. Audiences looking for more Potter aren’t looking to see which spells they recognise or what random name drops they can hear (Nicolas Flamel! I… Remember hearing about him. That’s cool… I guess), they most likely want to have the same emotional experience with the new film as they did with HP. And that’s just not what FB provides.

For me, the characters were what made the Harry Potter books work. Each book expanded on the world in new and interesting ways, but it was ultimately more focused because it was a story about a young boy who is seeking a sense of belonging and family despite having this pressure of saving the world out upon him. With any movie, when the characters are the anchor of the story, then the audience is given a reason to care about the plot. The Fantastic Beasts movies feel so detached from its characters, starting in the second film, that the focus becomes more on the McGuffin storyline than circling back to Newt or anyone that could have been the core of the films. Sounds like this new movie is more or less the same where it’s painting the brush too wide with out giving attention to its finer details.

Unpopular opinion: I like the films and the trajectory they’ve taken, but have yet to see Secrets of Dumbledore. The series has never been about fantastic beasts, but about magical repression. If you repress magic on an individual level, then an Obscurus manifests. Repress it on a cultural level, and a Obscurus-like manifestation takes place on a social scale in the likes of the ideals of Grindlewald. Either way, repression leads to negative implosive or explosive consequences. A positive alternative to this is modelled with Newt-a character who’s fascinations are also misunderstood and kept on the fringe of the wizarding world. However, unlike the repression model, Newt has someone like Dumbledore who champions him and encourages and channels his intrigue. Equally, the work of Newt is about demystifying the creatures of his world, seeking to help his peers see that these creatures are not monstrosities but fascinating and beautiful in their own right. Having said all that, great review Jeremy, as always 👍 Looking forward to watching the film.

I mean, I do think you could draw parallels between Newd's mission with his beasts and the overarching wizard-politics theme, but the problem is... it doesn't really matter. It isn't necessary at all. You could take out the animals and Newd and it wouldn't really change anything. Analogies between stories can be really good and important, but a strong connection to a unified plot and point is much more important.

Because there are a decent amount of plot holes and just horrible development. You have these big moments, especially in the 3rd movie, that happen but they don’t have enough build up and feel so underwhelming. The first movie was just way too focused on the beasts and really should’ve been called something like Newt and Jacobs adventure. That movie was focused way too much on beasts ans just made them look more important than they were. There was so much time taken away from building up parts for the second movie. The 3 rd one was just a meh, better than crimes of grindlewald. U have this massive election happening but no one cares about it in the other two movies yet it’s given so much importance. Why wasn’t there even a mention of it in the second movie? The actress playing Tina couldn’t film much due to personal reasons but the excuse they made in movie was just so lazy. It felt as though Bunty was meant to be Tina in disguise (with polyjuice potion) and I guess they accidentally had a build up for this because a lot of people thought this. They introduced characters that were just ditched- like nagaini. The tie port key was just a plot hole. The title is ‘secrets of dumbledore’ but they barely reveal any secrets. It’s meant to be 5 movies so 2 more left. I mean obviously it wouldn’t be the last one because the whole build up is to the massive duel between Grindelwald and dumbledore.

No gimmick item that prevents them fighting or whatnot. Good ol dumbledore using his wits and skill to take down an evil organization and take down the dark lord.

That was my exact feeling when it came to Depp as Grindelwald, I think if he had been given the right direction to play him more serious and charming he could done a fine job with the role. But he is just in a completely different movie than the rest of the cast, and I thought "I just don't buy this guy being able to have almost made Dumbledore go completely against his character". Even though he's pretending to be someone else I could see the hints we get of the true character in Farrells portrayal to do it. But Mikkelsen even though I don't have any big expectations for this movie and really the thing I want to see the most is if they manage to top the duel scene from Order of the Phoenix, before I saw a trailer I could picture it in my head of how he would play him and from what the trailers showed my imagination was pretty spot on. The idea of Grindelwald was clearly if Voldemort is the dictionary definition of fairy tale pure evil who yes does have some loyal followers that worship him but mostly is able to gain followers through power and fear. Grindelwald sounded like the other you know who before his true intentions was revealed. Who actually was able to gain his position using charisma, cunning, knowing when to show strength and when and how long to fake his true motivations so that by the time you are in the cult you don't know how to get out.

When they first launched the Fantastic Beasts series back in 2016, I was happy to get something more out of Potterverse but didn't understand why it'd take 5 movies to showcase fascinating creatures . Unfortunately the filmmakers realized this after the 1st one....cause the 1st one was the only one which focused on these creatures. Now they've shifted to a completely different story and just randomly putting in a few creatures here and there for the sake of it. Fantastic Beasts wouldn't have required more than 1 movie, and then WB could've easily focused on a different series for the story of Grindelwald and Dumbledore. I don't even think a magizoologist like Newt Scamander would've taken part in a war like this if the screenplay hadn't mixed up the whole thing.

I think Depp is a decent casting for Grindelwald, the problem was that Rowling gave him a mediocre material to work with which really affected his performance. A lot of people put the blame on the actor when it was really the screenwriter who gave orders what the characters supposed to do. We all know Depp is an incredible actor and very talented because of that, I think Depp could've been a better Grindelwald if Rowling gave him a far better material to work with. It's always comes down to that script. Depp didn't have that much screentime as Grindelwald in the second movie because Rowling overstuffed a lot of subplots that it made it confusing and difficult to follow
