My biggest gripe with this movie is how they treat Jacob who in my opinion has been the most relatable and interesting character in the series thus far. Throughout this movie, they drop little hints about his character and how he conducts himself as opposed to Grindlewald. And even for the final act of the movie, DumbleDweeb takes Jacob aside as part of the whole fakeout subplot near the end of the movie. They really make you believe that possibly the Qilin(the fawn-looking creature) is going to bow in front of Jacob as he is worthy to lead. I'm not saying that he would given he's a muggle but still, that would have been intelligent writing as that would have challenged Grindlewald's entire philosophy and his outlook on muggles in general. But no... Of course, it had to bow to DumbleDweeb instead. Of course, we can't expect anything close to remotely creative from this franchise let alone this studio at this point... What a farse :/

The three biggest things for me : Calling this The Secrets of Dumbledore and telling us nothing that we didn't already know or guess from the books. (except from Credence but second point is just below) Making Credence Alberforth's son : from the little information we get from him, I always imagine Alberforth as a guy who truly cares for his family, and that's why he hated his brother so much from what happen with Ariana. I just can't picture the guy abandoning his child. The only good point is that we didn't focus on that a lot because that was a very stupid idea anyway to make Credence a Dumbledore. Just because it is a prequel doesn't mean that you have to create stupid connections ! Making the Qilin kneels before Dumbledore. Have it kneeling before Newt, or Jacob, but Dumbledore ? The whole point of his character development in book 7 was to say "he looked like the perfect stereotype of the old, noble and wise wizard, but he is actually a b*stard and is a very grey character" (I won't call him black, he has good side, but come on). If you want to expand your univers, *don't destroy it*.

The craziest thing about this story is the whole “if we don’t know what we’re doing then Grindelwald won’t either” because THATS NOT HOW TELLING THE FUTURE WORKS. Like was the only one confused by that? If it was mind reading, sure. Not knowing the plan definitely would help if your mind was being read. But Grindelwald is a SEER not a legilimens. He is telling the future. So it doesn’t matter if the squad knows or doesn’t know the plan because the events of the future are already laid out. We’ve been shown a few times in Harry Potter that the past and future are determined. And even if you go back in time you’re just completing the loop that was always there. So time is definitive meaning the future is definitive. So that means there should’ve been no confusion for Grindelwald and only the squad would’ve been confused and at a complete disadvantage. Movie sucked so bad.

Harry Potter LOVES to resolve the plot with stuff the protagonist had no control over. How does Harry beat Voldemort? By challenging his ideology? By uniting the various magical races and muggles together? By uniting with his friends and forming a strategy? With raw talent? No. None of those things. Harry wins because of an unknown detail of Elder Wand's ownership mechanics. That's it. He was technically the owner of the wand so Voldemort's spell backfired. It's no different than him defeating Voldemort because of a charm his mother accidentally put on him as a baby. He had no agency. And now the story is resolved because the magical deer had twins. Another accident.

Harry technically lost because he surrendered. Everything following was luck. @Iris-bc1zi2 жыл бұрын
Totally agree. Didn't even bother watching this one for lots of reasons, but everything I see here confirms it just continued its unnecessarily over the top dark and depressing material. Like, yes, life is suffering sometimes, but half the point of literature is to either have that suffering count for something or to show the cruelty of the world through the pointless suffering, or even for character growth. The memory wipe does none of this. It somewhat highlights the cruelty of Grindelwald and nothing else, severely damaging a character for literally no purpose and almost as a side note that does nothing for the story. Atrocities in fiction just for the sake of atrocities or highlighting one characters badness is just disgusting to me. Got enough depressing, meaningless suffering in real life; we don't need it in fiction too.
@Shaw4Life2 жыл бұрын
JK Rowling never said it was a family series or for kids. She said specifically it was for adults and is adult rated.
@Iris-bc1zi2 жыл бұрын
@@Shaw4Life Sure, and that's fine. But I think there's a difference between adult content and overly dark content just for the sake of it. I'm all for dark stories, when they're told well and purposefully. And I think the first Fantastic Beasts movie is a great example, not really of a DARK movie, but one with some heavier content in it (the abuse at the orphanage, the prejudice between social groups, etc.) that served a purpose and was handled pretty well. If the movies had just gotten somewhat darker or more adult, and continued to handle those topics well, I'd have no issue with that. I prefered the lighter tone of the first one for this series, but whatever. My actual problem is that it went SO dark SO fast and for no real reason. We went from having a jaunty time around New York with some heavier undertones to killing babies MORE THAN ONCE in the very next film. It's jarring, it's disturbing, and it didn't really serve much of a purpose. Death number one was solely to highlight the evilness of Grindle and number two was the shoehorn in a Dumbledore lineage plotline that didn't make much sense. And the first death was the one I took a real issue with. Because the second one, while handled clunkily, at least had the decency to try to have a reason or real meaning and affect in the story, and if told better could have led to some interesting storylines or themes about handling grief. But not only did that second one not really take on the matter with any kind of delicacy, but they slapped on that first child killing for no reason at all except to make a point or set a tone. That's the kind of crap I expect from a teenager trying to be edgy and dark without any real grasp of narrative purpose or consequences. And I probably should have already learned not to expect better from Rowling, but I was still disappointed. Heh, sorry for the long response. Mostly just wanted to highlight that there's a difference between a film being for adults and being overly dark just for the sake of it. The second film went way too far, imo, and it looks like the second one kept up that trend, which for me is just a nail in the coffin on top of all the other reasons I wasn't planning on seeing it.

I'm still mad that the live Qilin was in a case at all. As one Haley Starshine explains in episode 428 of the webcomic Order of the Stick, the whole point of a shell game is that if you can give the opposition a 0% chance of picking the right suitcase (I mean, shell), why give them any chance at all by actually having the Qilin in a suitcase (ball in a shell). That Qilin should have been in Bunty's magical purse or whatever, with all the baddies chasing after the suitcase decoys on the assumption that one of the suitcases contains the Qilin. The fact that this badly-executed trick worked just because the baddies weren't on the lookout for another suitcase or something is what I hate about this whole sub-plot.

If they had been smart, they would have done the first movie as a Newt origin story...THEN change gears and do a Dumbledore series...with Newt appearing only when important or necessary....and focus on Dumbledore....since that makes writing this story immensely more logical, and natural, in plot....instead of forcing a square peg in a round hole for 2 movies.

You know, what I really want to know is what in the world Lally's accent is supposed to be. It sounded just so inconsistent. At first I was trying to pick out if it was northern or British. But when they said she works at Ilvermorny, which confirms her character is American. So, it sounded like a yankee accent that had some mid-American influence. But then there was this southern drawl that kept cropping up too. And...and I just can't tell!
@Xgendude142 жыл бұрын
Maybe she came from the South, hence the drawl? And Ilvermorny is in Massachusetts, so maybe she picked up some Yankee/mid-American from working at Ilvermorny? @CaptainMemesteroid2 жыл бұрын
very clearly mid atlantic
@peregrinfandomizer2 жыл бұрын
@@CaptainMemesteroid No, not really. If Lally's actress was trying to do a mid Atlantic accent, it was a poor attempt. I've done my own research recently and a few people have said it's a mid Atlantic, but it seems like thats mostly because it's what Lally's actress said it was. But it doesn't even make why would Lally even have that accent in the first place. Mid Atlantic was basically more or less created by Wlliam Tilly because it's what he thought it was what 'proper' or 'correct' English should be. And he then practically spent his time as a sorta dialect coach for actors and at universities teaching people to talk like that. As it turns out, Lally *is* from New York and mid Atlantic was taught in the school system, but it was kinda only available to people with a higher learning like Hazel Scott. Again, it's whole purpose was to sound refined. But here's the thing, Lally would have never really been exposed/taught it in the first place. Mid Atlantic was *not* an accent people spoke natively, it was taught to people to sound that way. But Lally never spent the rest of her formative years in the New York school system, she was a witch that started going to Ilvermorny when she was eleven. If anything, Lally's accent should have a more Massachusetts/Boston influence (a very non rhotic accent) since that's where she spent most of her childhood and teen years.
@marieroberts54582 жыл бұрын
Yeah, Lally's accent was all over the place...and if it was a mid-Atlantic accent, I would not have heard it as anything else than standard American English because apparently my native accent is ( like most suburban tri-State people) the mid-Atlantic accent (I am from the suburbs of northern and central NJ). So the accent was a mishmash of not knowing which side of the Atlantic your character is supposed to come from.

21:45 I always thought that none of the suitcases in the room are the real ones, they're all just copies. When jacob tries to grab the first and dumbledore shakes his head it's just to misdirect in order to make newt think that that is THE suitcase so that grindenwald also believes it. So it doesn't matter what suitcase Jacob or Bunty grabs, the suitcases are copies, then whatever suitcase Bunty is left with, she's going to switch the fake case for the actual case that was never in the room. I base on this because, in the scene where Bunty goes to the shop to have the case replicated, she says that she needs half a dozen copies, so there are six copies of the case plus the original one (seven suicases) but we see only five in the room and, when I first watched the movie and I arrived at the room of requirement's scene, my question was : "where is the sixth case, there are only five" but it never occured to me that among those five there is the actual case, I always took for granted that they were all fake and that Bunty would grab the actual after exiting the room. I imaged that dumbledore's plan was not so much as "five don't know which the actual case is so grindenwald will be confused", it was more like "if five people will think that newt has the actual case and only two knows otherwise, then grindenwald's vision will be more attracted by five and will look for newt's case". At least, that is how I interpreted the movie (which plot makes no sense anyway but this is another matter)
@claudiuivan66682 жыл бұрын
Which case they thought was the real one, shouldn't have mattered. Because Grindelwald does not read minds, he sees the future. So if they all believed that the Suitcase #2 was the right one, it would have made no difference, because he would've known it wasn't that one eventually. And they've already made it clear in Harry Potter that the future is set in stone, so the >1 possibilities excuse does not work here, Grindelwald should've seen the outcome of this.

The two biggest sins of this movie imho are: - how do Dumbledore and team know the extent of the 'vision of the future ' of Grindelwald? I mean, how do they know that Grindelwald does not see EVERYTHING? And if we accept that Grindelwald can only see 'a few moments/scenarios', how they can assure that he does not see for example the plan with the fake briefcases? Or everything in between the events happening in the movie? - the Wizards accept the Qilin as a trustworthy chooser...why? Nobody has ever thought that (as it happens in the movie) the Qilin can be commanded through a spell? I mean, it is like "we trust the elections because they are not riggable...except they are". Completely nonsense.

1- Grindewald is not the only wizard capable of divination, not by a long shot. Divination is a class in Hogwarts, meaning it has been studied for a long time and has lots of specialists. It's very likely that this talent has been observed and studied before, maybe in different forms or applications but following the same principles. 2- One of the characters (I don't remember who) says Qilins cannot be deceived. This means it can read your soul, but it also implies that it cannot be bewitched, controlled or confused, which also explains why Grindewald had to kill it and animate its dead body in order to make it bow to him. This is not confirmed, but somewhat likely.

They could have created tension without killing off people. In real life we are often stressed or afraid even if our life is not in danger. Credence is allowed to fail Grindelwald twice without any repercussions or punishment. We're talking about the third most powerful wizard of all time and the second most powerful evil wizard of all time, a man, who along with his followers, committed numerous crimes and several murders. The defenders of this atrocious movie will mutter about "subverting expectations" and come up with long reasons why it wasn't him...when the reality is very simple. They felt like they NEEDED to have it kneel to Dumbledore, because he's the most recognizable character in this movie. Having it kneel to Jacob in front of everyone...including Grindlewald accomplishes literally everything the heroes supposedly wanted. Shows that muggles ARE worth while, can be just as good, etc. Not too mention that it'd show the disparity between what they were willing to choose in Grindlewald, evil, and expose his nonsense for what it was by having the magic deer kneel directly opposed to everything he stands for. Defeated in detail would be the terminology used for how utterly devastating that would have been for him. Yet, it kneels to Dumbledore and some lady we know nothing about and who's never been mentioned before or since in any meaningful way. Yay?

I expected it would bow to Newt (after Dumbledore) not the President.

And that end fight was so anticlimactic. Like everyone talks about the amazing duel between Dumbledore and Grindewauld, but it felt so short

It sucks that they don’t explicitly let you know who Grindelwald is until like 40 minutes in, because I had forgotten that Johnny was recast. So basically I had no idea what was happening

Went to see this film. Got comfy recliner chairs and saw so much Hufflepuff pride (GO FELLOW BADGERFLUFFS!) But my god the first 20 minute slow burn between Albus and Grindy made me want to die. Not because gay wizards but because MY GOD I COULDN'T CARE LESS! GET ON WITH THE FANTASTIC BEASTS!

I think it was pretty well established in the HP movies that Dumbledore IS a monster.

I disagree. that comment was mean to the poor, innocent, monsters. to compare those nice creatures with Dumbledore... that was cruel. poor dementors. what have they done to deserve that ofensive remark? dumbledore is far worse than a monster.

And he knows it about himself very well! In the final book, he admits his flaws, and that he wanted this power that he dreamed of. He knows that he's not pure of heart. It looks like the author just forgot. Anyway, what are his secrets? IS it that he had a nephew? Like wtf is that really, Aurelius Dumbledore?!! The hell... WHEN I heard it in the second movie, I thought it'll be just some bullshit lie that Grindelwald made up, but I never, ever thought they'd go through with that, because of course he.gotta be someone related to Dumbledore, no matter, nah it'll be fine...,

@@riverskipworth2657 Maybe the Dumbledore with the secrets is supposed to be Aberforth? Either that or the secret in question is the tragedy of Ariana.

Are you saying this because of him joining Grindewald? Because he had a change of heart and even directly opposes Grindewald this movie. I don't see why he would he be so evil

@@Jay-nh6um No, because of the way he uses Harry and others to bring down Voldemort.

10:25 I don't want to be a smartass, but isn't it obvious that in a magic world things like doors, buildings are protected with you know, magic? Magic is only the solution as long as you are the only one who can do it. But in a world where everyone can do magic, it kinda evens out and you can't open every door, teleport whereever you want etc. Magicians in a magical world are more limited in their abilities than in storys where they are the only one with powers. 11:20 Yeah, wizards can trace magic. So that wouldn't work, everyone with magic could tell. As for Tina: She was meant to be in the movie, but got very sick with covid, suffering from Long Covid for some time. That wasn't a plot hole, just shit that happened. I really hope she's better now.
