Excellent reaction to an amazing movie. I'm Canadian and our history with the Native people is just as horrendous. The citizenry has made so many outcries that we want to make good with the Native peoples of this land. We've even had well-loved celebrities take up the cause to pressure our government. But nothing ever comes of it. Graham Greene, the actor who plays Kicking Bird, is from a Canadian Reserve (Six Nations) that is very close to my hometown of Brantford. A lot of talent has come out of the Six Nations. These are a gifted people when they are given an opportunity.

Note the original movie was broken up. There was a 20 min intermission in the middle of it. I watched this film in the theater at 13, it was absolutely stunning. It's probably one of the first drama movies I ever saw that made me just stop and appreciate visual storytelling. I think before this point it in my life it was always about the action or comedy moments, you never grasped the concept of big themes and grand cinematic experiences. I don't remember what other modern films had the same effect, but I know it was a long time before I experienced another one in theaters.

One of those must-see movies for sure. Not just because of the history of the setting or the quality of the cinematography and the story, but it's a weird little time capsule of 90s movie making and sentiments. Many of the best films ever made are long, but long movies used to come with an intermission for a reason. It's perfectly fine to watch them in segments. The extended editions of LotR came on two separate DVDs with a well-placed break in the middle.

The buffalo hunt was amazing to film, and, yes, Costner was riding on uneven ground in the midst of a LOT of buffalo. (Insurance company holding its breath...) I think it's great that you read, at length it seems like, about Native American history. Yes, it's very tragic at times, and this movie captures a moment where a more positive outcome might've been possible. Kudos to Kevin Costner for his insistence on authenticity in regards to the three tribes shown in the movie, the Lakota, Pawnee and Cheyenne. While there have been previous attempts at telling a more authentic story regarding Native American history, they always fell a bit short. I'm Lakota, from the Standing Rock Sioux tribe, and i remember family members raving about the movie. I was hesitant to see it...but eventually went. So glad I did, as the movie did have a more in depth portrayal of native life at that period in time. I think native American history is still....if not understood, not fully acknowledged. Movies like this are good at bringing attention to a people who are still here, still thriving and moving forward. The four hour edition is more expansive, with an explanation of what happened at the outpost before Dunbar arrived. More Lakota daily life.... Well, maybe someday, I suppose. Really enjoy seeing your reactions.

A great movie. Not surprised it won the poll. One of my favorite soundtracks of all time. For me, the saddest part of the movie is the horse and wolf dying, and the fact that he has to leave the tribe, which has really become his home. I think you've seen all the Kevin Costner movies that I've seen, except Silverado, which is a great modern western. I don't know what kind of books you read most often, but I'm going to recommend two. The Wolf's Hour by James McCammon, a WWII spy thriller with a werewolf in it. I'm not a historical fiction guy, but I love werewolves, and this was a really good story. The Wolf Hunt by Gillian Bradshaw, also a werewolf story, but based on and reading more like a medieval lay, set during the time of the Crusades. It's hard to describe, but it's really good. Always a pleasure watching with you. Keep up the good work.

Two "must see" Kevin Costner films, in my opinion, are The Postman (1997) and Waterworld (1995). There were plenty of production issues and budget overruns that tainted these films, but I still enjoyed both of them very much, found them novel in their approach to the "post-apocalyptic" genre, and appreciated Costner's ambition with both projects.

@AwesomeUSmovies , the beginning of the film takes place during the American Civil War. The reason for cutting of of the appendages, had more to do with the current surgery knowledge & tech available. Ironically, the medical improvements from atrocities just like that one depicted would greatly lead to the alternatives, allowing wounds to be treated and prevent amputations. One might argue it was a necessary step at the improvement of medical doctrine.

Trivia for "Dances With Wolves," for James and any viewer interested in knowing. - Released in 1990; directed by Kevin Costner; screenplay by Michael Blake, based on his own novel. - Dance With Wolves won seven Oscars: Best Picture, Best Director (Kevin Costner), Best Adapted Screenplay (Michael Blake), Best Cinematography, Best Film Editing, Best Original Score, and Best Sound. Nominated in five other categories - Best Actor (Kevin Costner as John J. Dunbar), Best Supporting Actor (Graham Greene as Kicking Bird - winner was Joe Pesci in "Goodfellas"), Best Supporting Actress (Mary McDonnell as Stands With a Fist - winner was Whoopi Goldberg for "Ghost"), Best Art Direction, and Best Costume Design. - Dances With Wolves was Kevin Costner's directorial debut. He became only the fifth person to win the directing Oscar for their first film, and it's happened only one other time since. - Michael Blake wrote a sequel novel, called "The Holy Road," and there were talks of making it into a film, but they never materialized in the end. Blake died in 2015, so it's unlikely that they'll try to adapt it anytime soon. - The cinema cut is three hours, one minute. A four-hour "special edition" was released one year later. Kevin Costner claimed he didn't work on it, and it was co-producer Jim Wilson's idea. - When Dunbar is assigned to the West in 1863, he wears a gold bar on his shoulder straps, indicating his first lieutenant rank. It was changed to a silver bar in 1872. - Many studios were hesitant to take on "Dances With Wolves," as a result of the 1981 film "Heaven's Gate" sending the Western genre into decline. Orion Studios ended up saying yes, and it ended up becoming only the second Western ever to win Best Picture, and first since 1931. Only one other film - Unforgiven from 1992 - has done it since. - Kevin Costner's real-life daughter Annie played young Christine in the flashback scene. According to IMDb, she was only supposed to look over her right shoulder, but she couldn't tell left from right at the time, and so she looked over both shoulders. - Two different wolves were used to play Two Socks. Both were kept on set at all times, and both of them later found permanent refuge in a wildlife sanctuary. - Kevin Costner and the production team spent $250,000 on creating some animatronic buffalo during the hunting scene, to prevent animal cruelty. The whole scene took eight days to film, and could only have one take per day, because any buffalo that were real were able to run up to ten miles per day in various directions.

During the Civil War, the military did not provide personal medical care. Medical care, besides being ignorant yet about infection, was basic and hurried and meant to serve military goals, not the desires of the wounded. Rather than put smashed bones back together, it was more efficient to saw them off, often without anesthesia. Officers were usually wealthy men, ones who directed and observed battle well out of harm's way (so not often injured) and were rich enough to bring their own private attending physicians. This also meant care was not shared with the fighting men, so not sharing surgical instruments or nursing care meant less spread of infection. Dunbar being given care by his superior officer's physician meant he had a FAR better chance to survive his injuries as well as keep his foot. When the insane Major Farnborough sends Dunbar to a far-off post, he made no note of Dunbar's arrival or departure. And when he shoots himself, it left only Timmons knowing Dunbar's whereabouts. When the Pawnees kill Timmons, Dunbar might as well have dropped off the edge of the world. No one alive knows he's there or ever showed up at all. There won't be any relief troops coming; as far as they know, the outpost is still abandoned. No supplies, no help. He's on his own. The buffalo herd you see in this film is a pitifully tiny size compared to what there was before the white man came to decimate them. The herds were dense and extended beyond sight. When a herd ran by, it took days for them to pass. I love how you discuss the movie length before starting the film, noting that this is a 3hr film, and moments later saying a 3-1/2hr film would be too much for you. Then, nearing the 3hr point, you are talking about wanting to see more story, that you're anxious to see what happens next, as Dunbar and wife part company with the tribe while the soldiers are after them. Glad you liked this film! My recommendation for your next Kevin Costner film is "Waterworld" (1995). The film addresses living in the environmental aftermath of the melting of the polar ice caps, as imagined 30 years ago and 25 years after the first Earth Day in 1970. It was panned when it first came out, but I think it's a great film that has held up all this time.

Great comments. I remember reading Native Americans (at least those on the plains) believed that buffalo were sent from what we might refer to as a heaven, beneath the earth.
@chris...94975 күн бұрын
@ The mass killing of buffalo was not just the whim of the rich or a financial opportunity, but also a US government strategy to starve out the native populations. Native Americans relied on buffalo for food, clothing, bedding, housing, tools, and so much more, to survive. Also, once the US government took over, it tried to extinguish the native culture and survival skills. Native children were essentially kidnapped and kept in boarding schools where they were punished if they spoke their tribal languages or engaged in any of their culture (storytelling, dancing, drumming, singing, praying, etc). Since then, there's been much work invested in saving what culture survives, much of it from surviving elders.

It wasn't huge movie at the time - largely because it is British, it involves gangsters and the cast have cockney accents. It is not a movie that was going to sell in America! But if you have seen him play Gandhi, then seeing Ben Kingsley playing Don Logan will amaze you. While the rest of the cast had been on location filming in advance, Kingsley had limited time to spend there, he showed up after the crew had settled into production. When he showed up, he showed up in character and supposedly freaked everybody out, they couldn't cope with being around him. It's a great movie, and Don Logan is one of the best characters in British movie history!

This film is also in my top 20 (maybe top 10) of all time. Just as Dances with Wolves doesn't feel like 3 hours, the extended cuts of the Lord of the Rings films do not feel like 4 or 4 1/2 hours. Whenever a film completely engages the audience, time passes quickly. Whenever I watch the LotR films, I always choose the extended cuts. As for Kevin Costner films: He has supporting roles in some great films like Hidden Figures. For larger roles you should check out The Untouchables, Tin Cup, Thirteen Days, JFK, Open Range, Silverado. A couple of cult classics that didn't receive critical acclaim, but are enjoyed by fans you could include Waterworld and The Postman. A good October film might include Dragonfly. I also enjoy movies like Swing Vote, Wyatt Earp, The Bodyguard, Bull Durham, and Draft Day. Of course, a really good movie, but the smallest roll he ever had (he plays a corpse) would be The Big Chill.

The significance of Major Fambrough being insane, and killing himself with his pistol at the fort, was to exemplify a severe case of PTSD, before it ever became a recognized illness. The life of a soldier on the frontier was many days of boredom, interspersed with moments of sheer terror, at the hands of a ruthless, yet capable foe. Most interlopers on the frontier were simply fighting for a little piece of land, whereas the Native Americans were fighting for their way of life ..... Their very existence! The native peoples had more to lose than the pioneers, and they righteously fought hard to keep it!

The native Americans being conquered had most everything to do with ~90% of their population being wiped out by smallpox after first contact when it spread inland and across the country far faster than the Europeans. The American colonists basically arrived in a post apocalyptic land. Had smallpox resistance been equal; the population strength difference probably could have held out and enforced their sovereignty enough to arm up and secure a legitimate interior nation. Totally transforming world history and the global map today.

Wonderful reaction, James. Regarding the extended editions of LOTR, you can give them a pass. You've already read the books, so the only thing they could give you is further insight into Peter Jackson's vision of the characters. My husband was Oglala and I spoke with a few of his family about it. Some loved it, some didn't. Personally, I think it's a beautiful book and the whole thing felt like a prayer to me. The woman who wrote it, Ruth Beebe Hill, studied the Lakota dialect and the book was translated back and forth from English to Lakota back to English to make sure it expressed what was intended. It's got a glossary and pronunciation guide, which I loved. I can't recommend it highly enough.

3+ hours long, and you felt compelled to sit through the credits just in case there was more...if that doesn't say how great this film is, then not much will!

I watched this movie many many years ago and since then much of what I've heard about it is actually negative. But I saw an interview with Tantoo Cardinal, a First Nations Canadian actress who seems pretty hip to her peoples issues, praising it and her time in it. I have not rewatched the movie, but have seen some reactions and I think some of what people now say of the movie is just wrong. It's not a "white savior" film, the criticism I most see, as it's quite clear he does not rescue the Sioux nor are they treated as pitiful or dysfunctional people he needs to rescue. They more rescue him. Sure some of his knowledge with guns is useful to them with the Pawnee, but... Okay that leads to one problem I do have that a person of indigenous descent brought up to me. Sometimes these movies that sympathize with the Sioux kind of end up villainizing the Pawnee. I think the movie indicates the fight they have is over resources/food and neither is precisely "bad" but they do clearly make the Pawnee scarier looking/acting. Maybe it is inevitable this happens, but so far as I know there's never been a movie that's from the Pawnee perspective and that's unfortunate. Particularly as there seems to have been an actual John Dunbar who worked more with the Pawnee. On indigenous people yeah it's pretty horrible what happened to them. It's also sadly not that unusual. When I was young I had some ideals that Canada was better to their "First Nations" but this seems to not be the case. Paraguay is maybe the closest to an exception I can think of as the Jesuits were relatively benign and Guarani is one of Paraguay's official languages. I believe they are the only nation to have an indigenous language as official.

Its fine with me if you don't react to Lord of the Rings but the extended editions are worth watching and I own them so I happen to know they are on two separate discs. At least the ones I have are. So they would be easy to break up into part1 part2. LOL You do you, just passing along the info.

Not 'we'. The govt /military did that, fixes can start right there. You don't just put your hands up and say idk... thousands of years... or any other lame excuse. This is just as relevant today, as in right now, and they are still giving out those blankets you mentioned.

land not of value? isn't that why their casinos are tax exempt? imagine if you could run a farm without paying taxes, of any kind. how broke you would be? the idea that any type of land being seeing as useless, is crazy to me. i summit to you good sir: that the atrocities that the US may have committed over its quick 300 year of history, is out weighted by the sacrifices its made. not only by making the world a better place through technology and innovation, but also by saving an entire generation of a religious group in the 1940s. in such sort of time. this is a good movie with great cinematography. it represents the American frontier beautifully. at lest you didn't say that we stole this land. we kinda took it by force. just like every other nation before. sorry; not sorry.

If you ever want land. Go down to Texas. The state and government will give you hundreds of acres for free. It has no value to them. It's kinda crazy but there are literal signs on the sides of roads. 300 aches free call this number U.S. Government.

Wow, leave a Google link and get it taken down, crazy. No, there's no free land. You're wrong. Furthermore, you didn't address the taxes. Do you know how rich I'd be right now if my business didn't have to pay taxes. I'd be Mr money bags without taxes. How can a group of people be so poor and pay zero taxes. It can't be that the leaders of their tribes are just as corrupt as anyone else with power.

Thank you for your post-script, there are a lot of wrongs to be put right. I believe this movie was Kostners attempt to put some of those right. There are a few problematic elements, but it is far better than the bulk of movies made by white people depicting 1st nations people. There is a wonderful documentary called "Inventing the Indian' which is here in full on KZbin. As well as being interesting and informative, it is also very watchable and enjoyable. It really should be watched by anyone who has an interest in not just westerns, but all american movies, as it shows some of the problems of the American film industry and the hubris that it is soaked in. Whether it is in westerns or war movies, America is not alone in its "white saviour" complex, but compounds it with further jingoism. In westerns there could be claims of ambiguity or inability to see more than one side, but in many, many war movies - particularly in WWll movies - partly because there are so many of them, American movie makers literally steal accomplishments that were made by allied armies, even to the extent of claiming achievements that happened before they even joined the war. Even movies that weren't about war victories, Americans pop up. "The Great Escape" is a fine example. There are some big American roles in the movie, Steve McQueen - who plays the big heroic American who steals a motorbike and creates the big action scene in the movie with a chase and subsequent crash. And James Garner is such an "all American guy" that he jeopardizes and then sacrifices his own escape - and life - by trying to help an Englishmen who has become blind and cannot escape without help. in a fairly important scene in the movie, the German guards are distracted from the escape planning, by the American prisoners laying on celebrations for the Fourth of July, which continues for numerous scenes. It's a very entertain and highly regarded movie. But no Americans managed to get out of the camp in the real life escape. 76 prisoners did get out 3 managed to get to freedom. But no Americans escaped, because there were no Americans in the prison. I have feeling that over the next few years, we are going to see American history rewritten faster than ever. It's a really good time to look at American movie makers track record.
