Unfortunately, Fantasy Records was a cheap (and sleazy) outfit. Fortunately, John Fogerty can do it all! Need a session keyboard guy, or a sax player? Nope! With Fogerty playing and arranging, you still get an A+ record on a shoestring budget.

This song was released in 1970. As a Vietnam Vet, I can say, we adopted it as our Anthem. It was the mindset of the troops, that, the ''light'' was the hope that we would return home, to our family.

@@sharonmullins1957 At least WW2 provided closure for many families who lost loved ones because it was a righteous effort, if War can ever be righteous. Vietnam was a losing proposition from day one. Corrupt politicians & War crazed Generals kept it going even when it was clearly an exercise in futility. We can only take solace in the fact that it was a hard lesson learned. I believe that when he says 'As long as I can see the light' that he is referring to as long as he sees some reason to come home, he always will. In other words, that he still feels passion from his lover/wife/signifigant other. At least that's how I interpret it. Seems metaphoric to me. He's saying, 'Don't give up on me!'

To me, as Vietnam vets like my grandpa get older and start passing away one by one, it’s more of a funeral song than a soldier coming home song. My grandpa died in June of cancer related to Agent Orange. He was let down by our government, the very government he served. On his deathbed he weeped about how he was left behind by those who promised to take care of him. Every time I hear this song, I light a candle in my mind for my grandpa. He was the best man I’ve ever known and got little to no thanks for his service. But any time he saw a fellow Vietnam vet, he made sure to shake their hand and say “welcome home.”

I saw the original Creedence at the First Atlanta Pop Festival in 1969 . They came on late in the evening, and I remember everyone up and boogieing around one or two in the morning to “Keep on Chooglin,” with small bonfires burning to ward off the evening chill.
