Forget the "British invasion" of the Beatles and the Stones. John Fogerty is the voice of American home-grown R&R. Grand Funk is right alongside him.

With the depression, rationing during WWII and broke GI's running around right afterward, hitch hiking had become a pretty common mode of transportation and stayed that way into the early 70's.

I was in my late teens in 1970 and we would hitch hike everywhere. It was a mode of transportation, like taking a bus. I guess we were taking a chance getting into a strangers car, but nothing happened to any of us.

Stayed longer than that. We were hitching all the time in the late 70s and 80s. Wasn't until they started putting up the no hitch hiking signs everywhere that it mostly stopped.

I was a hitchhiker!! Back when I was in college in 1971, we would line the main street with our thumbs out to get rides out of town to the local tavern. I also hitchhiked from college to my home town several times. Very safe back then.

Sweet Hitch-Hiker was CCR's last single to reach the top 10 of the Billboard charts, peaking at #6 in 1971. A little trivia - CCR holds the record for having the most #2 singles (5) without ever hitting #1 on Billboard: Proud Mary Bad Moon Rising Green River and the double-sided singles Travelin' Band/Who'll Stop The Rain Lookin Out My Back Door/Long As I Can See The Light

I hitchhiked from about 8 or 9 yrs (1970 or '71) on, back and forth to Imperial Beach CA, and I picked up hitchhikers up until about the 90's; when I stopped doing so. My first concert was Cal Jam 2 in 1978. I was 15yrs9mos and I had to hitchhike from Ontario (Speedway) CA to San Berdoo at about 1am...whenever Aerosmith finished. I hitchhiked from the tunnel going underneath the track though...thumb out and asking "is anyone going to San Berdoo?" Said that twice and I heard a reply; "you can come with us." Turned out they lived just around the corner from our home. I told my mom, who dropped me off the night before the concert, that I had a ride home.🤥

Just a quick story about hitchhiking. Around 1957 American cars were all big beasts. My parents had one of the first Volkswagen Beetles in our area. One day my father and I were going somewhere and far ahead was a young guy with his thumb out (if you are a youngster that was the sign of wanting a ride ). The cars ahead of us went past him without stopping. When he saw us approaching in the little VW he dropped to his knees with his thumb still out. We didn't stop because we were almost at our destination, but that gave us a big grin. 😊

Love John Fogerty and CCR! This is another great song written by John Fogerty. This is a single off the last CCR album Mardi Gras and CCR is a Trio at this point. John’s brother Tom left the group to pursue a solo career which went no where! John is the star of the group! Because of the Jealousy of John Fogerty looming in the group over the years by the other members, they ended up falling apart when they were the top band in the world. They disbanded in late 1972!

Born in 62. I went with mom many times to drop my oldest bro off on the side of the highway so he could hitch a ride. We dropped him off so he could thumb his way to Woodstock. We lived an hour from it. The highway was an endless line of cars. Im a female & used to stop to give someone a ride. We didnt lock our house. There wasnt that danger back then. Long hairs had a bad reputation but they would be the first to offer help to someone. A store owner was giving out food to the young people during the concert & said he never met a more respectful & polite bunch of kids. Times have changed.

For those who don't know, John'o Groats is at the northern tip of Scotland and Land's End is at the extreme southwest of England, in Cornwall I believe, a long way up and down. Myself I enjoyed hitch- hiking in the 1970's doing four round trips across the USA and Canada with a side trip to Alaska. Best times of my life. Never a problem ( well maybe some minor inconveniences ).

Such a good classic, it has the old school reminiscing sound.

"Effigy" is one of my favorite CCR songs, seldom mentioned. It's a bit more political and slower but packs a punch.

Back in the 1970s, when on a sunny summer day, you could see as many as a dozen people hitch hiking their way to the coast... and yes, we would stop and help 9 out of every 10, but only one group or person at a time. ( We would, on occasion, see one and just pass by ) Rules of the road : One guy or girl : Yes 2 girls................ Absolutely Guy and girl ..... Yes 2 guys .............. Never 1 person & dog Yes Now P.C police and ? these were just general rules for picking up hitch hikers back in the day. It hasn't really happened as a thing for decades... it was a little more than a fad and only lasted a generation or 2 so please back it on down... thank you I really do miss those friendlier days !
