Interesting trivia, some people thought that was a real possibility the first time they initiated an uncontrolled atomic chain reaction (the atomic bomb). Or just the entire world, or known universe, would be destroyed. But they didn't the think that would _probably_ happen so they just went ahead. Just like how they set up the first operating atomic pile in an old gym right in the middle of Chicago with a guy with an axe to cut a rope to drop the control rods if it went out of control, which they were _pretty sure_ would stop the reaction before it exploded in a radioactive cloud, if they reacted within the few seconds it would take before it got dangerous.
