Thanks! Yeah, I tend to talk a little more than other harmonica YT teachers; I'm glad my method works for you. There IS a method in my madness, believe it or not. Anybody who tries to convince you that playing blues harmonica is only a matter of what holes to play--pure technique--is missing the soul of the instrument, and the history of the idiom and culture.

This is so beautiful. When I was growing up in rural West Tennessee, Lonnie Glosson used to travel through and perform at our little country school once a year until I was maybe in the 4th grade. He had an amazing rhythm on a tune he called "Ozark Fast Train" that was similar to the fox chase. It is one of those sounds that just set me on fire. Years later, I discovered Sonny Terry, who was just a force of nature. There are several players around here who emulate Charlie McCoy's playing, but I was afraid this type harp was a lost art. It is something I always wanted to learn. So thank you, thank you, THANK YOU!

Don't buy a tremolo harmonica if you're interested in playing blues. Just a diatonic. C is a great key to start off in, but you should also get an A at some point.

Just wondering, do you actively lift your upper lip or does it get lifted just by the blow/the air escaping your mouth? (To me it's quite a challenge not to blow myself up and keep the balance when chugging.) Other than that, excellent lesson! Especially showing close up what you're doing without the harp/being hidden by hands in front.
@gussowsclassicbluesharmoni2726
@gussowsclassicbluesharmoni2726 7 жыл бұрын
I do NOT actively lift it. Just allow it to happen. This is one of those things where you can't focus on it, you can't try to make it happen, you have to just be attentive to it and let it happen. Specifically, you have to relax, so that you don't tighten up and STOP it from happening.

Good explanation, Adam, thank you. When you Draw the Fa Ta, and do not blow the Ta, instead you draw the 3 (or bend the 3) and draw the 2 hole instead, which is the Fa Ta, it seems you're drawing twice with no blow? Did I miss something Please, explain this.

Thanks Adam and happy new day ! Another great lesson for beginners like me (Special 20 C received 1 month ago). For the people like me who quickly get full of air with fox chasing. I noticed I had to blow air with my nose during the "Fa - ta" to expulse more air during this sequence. It's ok with low tempo but as soon as the rythm gets higher I can't use my nose anymore. Any advice ? Thanks.

I said "foreshorten your mouth." Tricky word in Englisn for a non-native speaker! This means reduce the distance from front to back--which mostly means bringing your tongue forward, so that it's very close to the harmonica. If done right, this thins out the sound; you're moving less air volume, which lets you move more smoothly at a higher speed. Tres grande vitesse! :)

Hey Adam, I started watching this and then realized I had to go to my Yoga class. The whole hour was spent on breathing and breath control. Many of us don't have any idea how this works because we are on auto pilot. When I returned home I sat down with my harmonica and watched you again. Your not just teaching us how to play. Your teaching us Yoga. LOL Your thought process and teaching skills are amazing and as with all teachers your still learning with us. Thumbs up Sir Thank you for sharing.

I've never taken a yoga class. But I spent a couple of years as a daily meditator--just 20 minutes on the pillow in the morning, focused on slowing and following the breath and quieting the mind--and I'm fascinated by correspondences between seemingly different areas of human experience. I'm glad you got what I was doing. People who play harmonica with passion are in some ways working from the opposite of the meditator's approach: they're wrapped up in the drama, screaming their life force and (sometimes) their pain through the harp. But even a brief pause in that cycle, a moment in which they come back to themselves and say, "I'm breathing in and out," can help improve technique. In the long run, that makes for a better-sounding and more sustainable primal scream. So everybody wins.

Why DeFord Bailey named it fox chase?
@gussowsclassicbluesharmoni2726
@gussowsclassicbluesharmoni2726 7 жыл бұрын
Because white men in the South, especially rich and propertied white men in the Old South, enjoyed getting on horses and chasing foxes across fields and through woods, letting their packs of hound dogs take the lead. Black men, both enslaved and (later) free, were a part of the process. They were servants, helpers. They cared for the hounds and cooked the meals afterward. And they heard it all. So when they began buying and playing harmonicas, they tried to imitate all the sounds of a fox chase.
