Yes, Don’t Call it Mystery! This one especially stands out because Totonou is such an empathetic and sweet person; he deserves all the curry and museum visits in the world!

The manga version of you in your thumbnail looks like Arale from Dr. Slump. Fool Night is such a good allegory for work culture. If you like these mystery stories, you should check out Monster by Naoki Urasawa. It's about a brilliant surgeon who is caught in the middle of a bunch of serial murders and is the main suspect, but some Weird Stuff is going on in the background. I'm only one volume in on that one but I'm nearly slobbering thinking about getting further in.

Hi, yes, the manga-style image of me is by artist ray n. (well known here for years of contributing Community artwork), who was very much influenced by the classic manga artists. I read all of Naoki Urasawa's works and I watched the anime of Monster. Monster is something we discussed a lot some time ago (maybe 2 years ago ..) in the Community section.

@@Food4Dogs Ah, I have trouble keeping up with Community stuff on YT. Monster is new to me, but it's funny - every time I've mentioned that I'm reading the manga, somebody has specifically mentioned the anime. I guess I'll need to check that out once I'm done!

@@samu3lk5000 I believe the anime is pretty faithful - but I haven't read the manga, so it'll be interesting to hear about that once you've checked out the anime.

I'm so glad that Fool Night is getting more attention! I picked it up after a recommendation from the channel Lines in Motion, and I was instantly drawn in. I'll have to check out Don't Call it Mystery as well! Thank you for the lovely video, and I hope you have a wonderful day ^_^

I think the thing that works so well for Fool Night is that even though the fundamental concept is so outlandish, the characters’ motivations are so grounded, even base ( in a good way). Totonou is such an appealing character , I think because of his vulnerability. It’s something just barely hinted at in Sherlock Holmes, that this incredibly impressive person has their share of foibles. In DCIM, this takes front and center. Yes, Totonou is brilliant, the smartest person in the room, but he’s also a bit odd. He doesn’t fully understand the way the rest of the world works, nor they him. His long winded soliloquies become a sort of call-back joke that all the characters are in on. He’s just a wonderfully realized and nuanced character portrait

Yes, I didn't really have space to go into this fascinating duality of his character where he's a real loner in his 'normal' life, yet can connect with people in unexpected ways. I love how the police officer (from the first story) .. Ikemoto? .. becomes infatuated with him and relies on Totonou for personal guidance! 😄

Already read Fool Night vol 1 and am eagerly waiting for copies for volumes 2 and 3 from my local bookstore! The art is so powerful and the premise is so unique but Kasumi Yasuda really makes it compelling. Hadn’t heard of Don’t Call it Mystery but loved 7 Seeds so I’ll check out those out from the library. Loved hearing your thoughts on both series, they were really well considered and it’s obvious you enjoyed both of them.

I'm happy you enjoy those detective stories. I recently got my hands on the 3 English QQ Sweeper volumes and they are happily on my shelf now. QQ Sweeper is the prologue of Queens Quality and is a nice Shoujo action series that deals a lot with mental health and talking about your feelings and stuff. There are supernatural elements that get a lot more focus later on, but the main theme of the story is to learn to love yourself and to be open about your feelings. I really love this story. There are also other great stories, but Queens Quality is really nice. The prologue also has a German version but that one is not available anymore. But the English version still was. I also bought 2 new DVDs recently for 2 short anime series. The first one is Endo and Kobayashis live commentary on Tsundere Villainess Liselotte and the second one is Blade Dance of the Elementalers. I am also thinking of buying the DVD for Infinite Stratos. Because I suddenly have the urge to watch old shows from 2010. Undefeated Bahamut Chronicle is also quite nice. But I am still quite a child on the inside, so I really enjoy stuff like that. I hope you enjoy the next volumes of your new manga series. I need to collect the other Dead Mount Death Play volumes. It is a really good twist on the isekai genre. I love it. The anime was also just amazing. I'm sure you'd like it.

Oh, Yumi Tamura is one of my favourite mangakas! She's so talented! I haven't read that one yet as I prefer to wait for series to be completed before I read them, that way I can read them without any waiting time between chapters or volumes. I hope you can find a way to read 7 Seeds one day, it's one of my favourite ones and I've read at least 200 manga series so far. Another series of hers that I love is Basara, which also doesn't have a complete anime. Basara's story has the same sense of adventure as what you'd find in a JRPG.

Yea, I've been hunting around for 7 Seeds ... but it's super difficult to find any copies! I had a look at Basara via an online app; but unfortunately due to my eyesight problems I'm not good reading manga on screen. Gotta be on paper for me.

yayyy! I'm so happy you enjoyed these stories, they deserve some love! I also love the cartoon in the thumbnail 💗 yumi tamura is a legend in the josei/shoujo sphere, it's a crime her work hasn't been translated to english earlier. she's always topping the charts! 7 seeds is an amazing manga, I'm not sure if there's a way to read it officially in english unless its provided online somewhere (were there ever reprints...?) I've been reading fool night since the beginning and I'm completely hooked but most of all heart broken. It's a scifi of course, but it hits close to home... I grew up in poverty and it's a story that never forgets the long lasting trauma of that, how it echoes through generations and cripples the spirit. Gosh that sounds dreary, but it's a story about how people must fight for a future free of sacrifice. If you thought the early parts were brutal, then prepare yourself for the later chapters ^^" Anyhow I love your videos, thank you for your thoughts and have a nice day!

Thank you - the cartoon image of me is by long-time contributor here, artist ray n. I had a look into online reading of 7Seeds, but it's a messy situation, with various translations and volumes all over the place. I can't really do screen reading well, anyway (eye situation - in case you follow the Community page), so for me it's books or bust. I don't think there ever was a reprint. Individual copies of the original manga go for astronomical prices.

It might be worth checking out what your local library offers, if you have one nearby and accessible :) If they don't have what you're looking for, check out what other libraries they partner with; inter-library loans can open up a whole new world of reading possibilities! As well, some libraries (in the US at least) also offer the ability to borrow books digitally through services like Hoopla. Happy reading to you!
