You have just solved a life long mystery for me. You have no idea. When I was about two or three years old I saw a scene from an animation, where these women strip down a man and then these strange slug creatures changes his clothing while they laugh. That is all I could remember. This memory continued to come back over the last 30+ years. I tried to look for any animation created in the decades -riot to being aged two. I could never find it. Maybe because at age two or three our brains develop and what we see then has an effect. but until today I have never found out what this scene was or what animation it was from. And I have absolutely tried for over 30 years. I even thought if I went to heaven and God said he would answer just one question for me, that I would not ask for the answers to why we exist. But instead, I would just ask him what that freaking animation was. He would say, ”You don’t want to know the meaning of life?” “No” I would say. “What was that animation that has been in my head since I was two or three years old?” Well, as of today, you solved this one fundamental question I have had all my life. It sounds strange. But, thank you. Now I will ask for the meaning of life

One of the most bizarre, macabre, and in certain ways disturbing movies I've seen. And I mean that in a good way. There are many moral lessons that can be taken from it, it shows how cruel life can be, and the animation was cool and had a weird ending.
@pinkraven44026 жыл бұрын
Actually I think that the ending is the worst part of tge movie because is way too fast and chaotic - I think that the creators didn't have time or concept or something like that - the whole film shows humans struggling to survive and last 10 minutes is like "So we built a city, made rockets, made it to the other planet, yeah, peace with draags" - I'm like, "wtf just happened" xD

In the mid seventies, as I lazed in front of the TV after the last movie had shown it's credits and the National Anthem had played... I expected to have to get up and turn the TV off to avoid the blaring white-noise static of a dead channel... (Yeah, they used to shut down TV every night back then.) But instead of the expected snowy image, I got to have my mind blown by this film! I had never seen that happen before, or since... another film AFTER the anthem was unheard of! I suspect some late night employee at the station decided to break the rules that one time. Very glad they did. What a trip! We had no internet to look anything up, at the time, so I wrote down the title for when that ability came along, decades later. Found the film again 20 yrs ago and have watched it countless times... I was in so long, all my professors were telling my family that I should either withdrawl from college or take an incomplete. (I didn't. I still passed, thanks to my sister who took time from her job to audit my classes.) I woke in the middle of the night to see THIS on my hospital's TV. I immediately thought that the nurse must gave given me some powerful painkillers to treat my having Sickle Cell Disease, because I had no idea WHAT I was looking at. All I knew was that it was trippy to look at... and the drugs made it even weirder. And then I saw the ending and finally made the connection back when I was a kid. Fast forward another 10 years and this was on Showetime Beyond. (Thank you cable!) I finally taped this & this became one of my all time favorites! Now if only I could get my hands on a english copy of the book!

This is one of my favorite films of all time. I first saw it when I was 17 or 18, shortly after its release, and rewatch it every few years. Every element in this film seems to have a backstory that's been thought out and considered thoroughly. All the strange creatures seem not just frivolously strange, but the logical result of a different evolution. And even the popular styles of the Traags seem to have developed out of an entire imagined culture. The educational voiceover from the Traag headset has a hypnotic quality, and the music is simultaneously anachronistic and other worldly.

Watched it randomly, still very memorable and probably somewhere in top 30-40 favorite films, its so imaginitive, the score is astounding and the animation is phenomenal. It also is so perfect for different interpretations or allegories or metaphors.

Every time I see something such as this animated movie...I feel like I've seen it somewhere before and get nauseous. Just the thought of this movie is making me nauseous for some reason.

I find the story so meaningful, with this supposedly superior forms of life treating other beings that are not advanced as them but are intelligent enough as animals, however,at the same time, the animation just comes from my worst nightmares and I can't stand the idea of watching the scenes of this movie again

@@S_blackfire_S.4003 I agree The story and meaning are really fascinating but the art style is trippy.

The art style looks like you told someone "draw your own Dr seuss book" but they never actually read one just have seen some of the illustrations

Although also bizarre in general I'd say with upmost art snobbery that it's just a little different innit?

Tbh my favorite film is actually Belladonna of Sadness. Beautiful visuals and metaphors in that film. It influenced a lot of my screen prints I did in college.

I was so overwhelmed by the animation and surreal aspects of the movie when it caught me by surprise, in a cinematic theater with amazing graphics, 1977, in Seattle. Sitting in front of a huge screen, this movie put me into another reality. I loved it! I'd never seen anything like it, at all. Overwhelmed enough that I didn't notice too much the more sordid aspects of the characters and plot.

I have seen a “Criterion Collection,” release, of the movie, at one of the “Barnes & Noble,” stores.

Back in the days of mom and pop video stores my parents mistakenly chose Beta format. So we were relegated to a smaller section of the store a third the size of the VHS segment shopped. One time this woman was upset that this movie wasn't on VHS and only Beta. As she set it down she said something like how amazing the movie was and for lack of a selection we added this to the checkout. Years later it's so gratifying to see this movie surviving the test of time and having a following. Great video and if you have that soundtrack you have pictured I'm jealous.

Thanks for this! Love this movie. Just came back this minute from seeing it on the big screen at my local rep cinema. You say it's dissimilar to other animation at the time, but doesn't it remind you of Terry Gilliam's work that was on TV right around then?

I've been on my own little journey because of this movie. First I saw the memes using the song "Ruler of Everything." Then I listened to the song in full. Then I watched the music video using Fantastic Planet for background visuals. And now, this video popped up to tell me that it's not just some random background video, but a full on movie. Thank you, memes. I never would've discovered this without you.

I saw "Fantastic Planet" when I was a child and several times as a teenager/young adult. I agree that it is one of the best animated films ever made.

I remember watching this movie a very long time ago when I was young. but for some reason I VIVIDLY remember it having a vastly different art style (and it being in English). does anyone know if there where other adaptations of the original book that I don't know about? this one was the only one I could find. Edit: damn how many people saw this as a young child? I thought that was a unique thing my parents did because they where hippies, but I guess I was wrong.

I'm from Belarus (which is mostly Russian-speaking) and discovered Fantastic planet a few months ago. After that I have started showing it to my friends and almost everyone has told me he or she does remember these blue creatures from the childhood though they never watched the movie when grown up. It seems that here (and in Russia as well) it was regularly shown on prime-time TV somewhere in the end of 90s - beginning of 00s as a kids cartoon. I think that the situation can be the same in the West.
