Hi artist! As I'm preparing to go to the US I thought it would be fun to talk about which art supplies are recommended to pick up when visiting the US. Would love your opinions!

Artist and flight attendant here…..You can carry any tube paints in your carry on as long as each one is less than 3 oz. I take a whole little studio every time I travel, lol….i need all the things! Also…I found out how to make an diy art toolkit palette. Video is on my KZbin at kym crow art….The Nova color paints are excellent especially if you like a soft body acrylic. You can bring them back in your checked luggage. The QOR watercolor is very very pigmented! Twice as strong as any other brand!! They are excellent! Also on the soft pastels, I found the Townsend and Unison to be really scratchy and I really love a real soft pastel….my own preference and for those the Jack Richeson hand rolled extra soft are my very very favorite. Not all Jack Richesons are the same, it has to be hand rolled!…. Yes I have an art supply addiction and have tried just about every brand in every medium….i keep adding to this post as I’m watching the video….I have the Shinhan gouache…was a waste. Holbein so much better….

Awesome info thank you so much! Perhaps you know this- is it safe to send paint tubes in the checked luggage? I'm afraid they'd explode... Yes the packaging is a definite advantage of the nova colors , another reason I'm wanting to try them. Great info on the pastels too! Thanks again, much appreciated 😊
@kymcrowart78764 ай бұрын
@@iritlandgraf yes you can send the tubes in checked luggage, I do it weekly! Just double check all lids are on tight and put them in a plastic bag or any kind of bag just in case one would leak, but I’ve never had any do so.

Super fun. Stoneground pan gouache, which can be ordered to the US or through Wet Paint, is super fun. Love the DS gouache too. Safe travels!

Daniel Smith yes yes yes. For paper, I use Bee Paper Company watercolor paper. It's not cotton but watercolors show up very vibrantly on it. It's 50 9x12 sheets for $10 at Walmart in the art supply aisle. Ive seen it in a couple art stores too. There is a picture of a red phonebooth on the cover. Also, panpastels are great. I use them on top of watercolors.

Great info! I'll keep that in mind when I'm at walmart or other art stores! YES to pan pastels... I've been hesitant with that medium because they are so expensive but I think I would really enjoy them! What do you use to fixate them?
@septembermichaud67834 ай бұрын
@@iritlandgraf Personally, I don't use a fixative on them. I use them pretty lightly and they stay stuck quite well. I will suggest that if you get some of them, you should also buy some of the sofft tools they sell for spreading them on. You might think they look the same as cheap makeup sponges but the material is actually quite different and the sofft tools provide a much better experience than a cheap sponge. Edited to add that my favorite sofft tools are the ones that look like little eyeshadow applicators bc you can add a very light touch with them.

If your going to a blick their own brand watercolor paper is nice , as for DaVinci I love their watercolors as for gouache I've heard it's more like a hybrid and pans well.( per Frugal crafter) been thinking of doing a artist toolkit pallet with it or Daniel Smith . Have a safe trip and fun shopping 😊.

If you intend to go to Blick: I am finding their in-stock watercolor supplies is not always as broad as I like. If you have must-haves, I would pre-order them from Blick online, and ask how in-store pick up works. Or- order from Cheap Joes or Jerry’s Artarama or Jackson’s US, and have it delivered to where you are staying. I don’t want you to be let down. -but Wet Paint is highly regarded so maybe they are more reliable- I need to get there 😆

I love DS green apatite genuine better than cascade green. It’s probably my favorite green for leaves.

Yeah that's a good color too! I used to use it a lot more and then somehow moved on to others but Daniel Smith makes some great greens!

Both Daniel Smith and DaVinci sell dot samples of their full range that I’d recommend ordering while you’re in the US. Have a great trip!

Yes, visit Wet Paint art supply store in St Paul Minnesota (they have Stoneground watercolor/gouache half pans and sets from Canada). Watercolor sticks for Daniel Smith are usually under $10 US here. Qor 20 new colors yes, maybe you'll like Ultramarine Pink Dark. Da Vinici from California! And do put in an order from Cheap Joe's of some American Journey watercolor tubes and sticks which are like watercolor crayons! Diane Townsend sets are beautiful and love the chunky ones. THey have a 24 set of metallics too. Others to explore are Jack Richeson and Mount Vision. Dakota Pastels in WA state here sells sets and open stocks and ships fast! Get an Art Toolkit with standard pans!

Haha thanks for all the great recommendations, I'm excited and also a bit scared ;) Let me make it harder- if you had to choose 5 items (like a watercolor tube would be one item, an existing set of pastels another) that are the absolute best must haves in your opinion for visitors to the US- what would they be ? (lucky for me you know a lot of my preferences so feel free to curate your list... )
@derwood2064 ай бұрын
@@iritlandgraf ok 5 1) A Diane Townsend soft pastel set (12 'Terrages' set (chunky ones): Fluorescent or Fauve or 12 'Soft Form' set: Fluorescent or Hot Colors); 2) a 12 set of American Journey watercolor sticks (crayon texture, you can draw and re-wet) 3) Daniel Smith watercolor sticks 4) Daniel Smith gouache tubes 5) Stoneground dried gouache 12 half pan set by the "Mint Gardner" or the 12 Mint Gardner watercolor half pan set
@derwood2064 ай бұрын
the Mint Gardner watercolor set is the "Splendid" 12 half pan. (She just released a 'Workbook' set but i think you'd like the other more)

Ok you live in Austria and the availability of Schminke art supplies at a much more reasonably priced than pretty much everywhere else! I believe that the same can be said of CaranD’ache art supplies too? I am curious about what supplies you need to buy while in the US? The Nova paints are a sweet deal and you can order an Artist “set” and add 1 or 2 colors a’la cart, it can be less expensive that way.

Bee paper is also an option although not my favorite for watercolor, the marker paper is great. I'd say try Fluid to try them out and see if you like their 100% cotton paper
@iritlandgraf4 ай бұрын
will be on the lookout for those! Do you use the marker paper for markers or also for other mediums?
@derwood2064 ай бұрын
@@iritlandgraf i only tried it for markers and not my fave now because still bleed through so I replaced with Ohuhu marker sketchbook for markers and a mixed media cansons sketchbook I got from Jackson's. I guess i was brainstorming US companies so forget the Bee ha

I am just not going to recommend ANY SUPPLIES from Dan Smith! DaVinci watercolors are truly amazing and the best choice period. I have heard the DaVinci gouache does not dry truly opaque and is more like their watercolors. Cheap Joes is an Art supply store but they don’t have a lot of brick and mortar stores. I have to say their house brand American Journey has watercolor paint sticks and sooo much less expensive than DS! Could you order and deliver to the address where you are staying while in the US? Oh! You just said this exact same thing! I am looking forward to seeing more of your decisions! Til then, stay safe and enjoy your trip!
@mjpete274 ай бұрын
@@phillipstroll7385 I completely disagree. DaVinci makes a superior paint. They do not spend as much money on marketing and cheating their customers by lying about the ingredients in their paints! As gemstone paints with NO Gemstone particles. I just cannot trust that company especially when they do not even apologize!

If you are going to be near the Twin Cities, there are two Blick stores, and a wonderful small art store called Wet Paint in St. Paul. Blick often has special sales in their brick and mortar stores.
