I have been very disappointed in the DaVinci gouache videos that I have been able to find! I believe that they are most concerned with lightfastness and longevity of their products. The biggest complaint about DaVinci Gouache is it is more transparent and shiny, not flat like gouache should be for product photography. It has been rumored that the company is re-working the recipe for their gouache paints, so I am waiting for the change. I have purchased the White tube of DaVinci gouache and it is wonderful mixing it with my watercolor paints that I have already purchased, I am not going to say it is phenomenal or my go to gouache, but let’s see how it goes. I hope you check out M.Graham as well as DaVinci brands.

Hullo Irit, I have yet to decide on a “go to brand” for my gouache paint! I have the 10 tube set of Schmincke Akedemy 60ml tubes that I have really enjoyed using, I wish it was easier to get the other colors in the line. Schmincke Hordam gouache is a little easier to find but it is quite expensive, it is almost double the price of the higher priced brands! Like Holbein or Dan Smith. D.S. Is a brand that I feel is truly overrated and overpriced too! I purchased set A from ShinHan and it was a good deal so I got set B to fill out my choices in this brand! I found both sets are much less expensive if you put them in your subscription list and set the frequency of 6 to 9 months for re-purchase. If you have no need of the paints as you are not using them up? You can skip the month and keeping the paint in the list to maintain the lower price too! I like the opacity in your painting and so I think I need to give it more real world testing, painting more pictures rather than just swatching and mixing colors. Thanks for sharing your thoughts about these paints!

Thanks for sharing your thoughts too! Always great to hear more opinions and I totally agree on Schmincke Horadam and DS being too expensive (and I'm near Germany, so Schmincke is pretty much as cheap as it gets and still...). I will continue to play aroung with set B and if I truly love and use the paint I will definitely get set A as the price is excellent. Thanks again for commenting!

A few additional notes… regarding binder separation , happens in all brands, I give the new tube a hard shake first. I tend to paint more often with dried gouache and ShinHan dries great in a palette. Minimal cracking, re wets beautifully. Their white is easier to re wet than most however I always use white from the tube. I keep a small tube in my travel palette.

Re the intensity of your watercolours. I was watching an interview with Hazel Soan the other day and she says that every time you wet your watercolours, you’re separating the pigments from the binder and degrading the binder, so by the time you get to the end of your pan, you’re left with hardened pigment particles with very little vehicle left. Some people pick up paint with a flick and others get in there with a big wet mop and swirl it around and create a soup in the pan. The latter makes me cringe. I see it a lot in swatching videos (not yours, to be clear). I guess, if you don’t mix your own colours, you’re less likely to use the palette to mix your paint to the required consistency and just do it in the pan?? Maybe that’s where this habit develops? Anyhoo…just my thoughts on the subject. I guess that’s the benefit of using angled wells so the wash can stay separated from your paint.
@iritlandgraf8 күн бұрын
Interesting!! Thanks for sharing! Pan soup can be an issue 😅 although it can be satisfying to just dig in there at times 😉

Love this set, got it at the BF sale at Jackson's... got the 18 holbein and the Summer set to (already have autumn). I have a couple of mixing/startersets (WN, holbein, Schmincke...) and big tubes white (both) from WN. Therefore I like the B set more. The Jaune Br is a beautiful colour for the base of a painting. I could have done with a little less blue and greens....but i do love those colours😂😂😂 only painted 2 times yet, but loved it so far.... I did put swatches in my window, so in a couple off months i know more about the lightfastnes😊

I took advantage of the crazy sale and bought 2 copies of the 12-set (because the 24 Set A had too many mixes that I could mix, plus buying 2 12 sets gave me more white). Then I bought Set B at the last minute because of Hydrangea, ha-ha. I love these gouaches. They rewet beautifully, which is the most important thing for me. The lightfastness isn't any better or worse than other gouaches, much as people trash this brand while cutting the other brands a pass on lightfastness. With these, plus my collection of more expensive brands, I'm set for awhile, given my tendency to use gouache more thinly. Thanks for the validation, ha.

I love gouache, it is such a fun medium, great on its own and for mixed media. My fave brand is Schmincke HKS Designer’s Gouache. Works great fresh as well as rewetted. Winsor and Newton Designer‘s Gouache is a brand that I also like. But I also use other brands. Some of the less expensive brands like Arteza or Himi jelly gouache are fun to use.
@iritlandgraf9 күн бұрын
Thanks for sharing! I only have a couple of the schmincke gouache and I understand they have a couple of different gouache lines, knowing Schmincke, I'm sure they are great!
@justacatwhocantype9 күн бұрын
@@iritlandgraf Schmincke has Horadam gouache, Akademie gouache and HKS Designer's gouache. I use HKS because this is what I ended up buying (saw a good sale, so I decided this is the one I need, lol) I loved it and therefore I stuck with it. Horadam I have only tried the white so far, and it feels a lot like the HKS white to me. I would have to try more Horadam to be able to really compare the two. I also like using my gouache from a palette and this works really well with either one, they rewet back into a creamy opaque paint no problem. There also is a Schmincke Akademie gouache. That is a nice paint, too, and it comes in huge tubes at a decent price. But it has the one big drawback that it rewets horribly because it uses some synthetic binder. I have actually never seen a gouache rewet so poorly. Once dried you can't make it creamy again, even if you let it soak for hours, all you can get from it anymore is a thin transparent wash. I would not buy it again for that reason. But when used fresh, the results I can get with it look good, so I am using up what I still have.
@jennw680910 күн бұрын
In my experience, white always dries faster than colors, no matter the brand! I've looked at this many times, I also like the set B :) I bet the fluorescent pink combined with the cobalt violet hue would be nice! Oh and Jacksons does have these open stock. The one downside of this brand (and also Mjello) is they are not all lightfast. But Sarah Burns loves this brand and it's fine for sketchbook!! PS: The DaVinci gouache is very lacking. I don't recommend it currently -- but they did mention they were working on reformulating.

Thanks for sharing! Good to know all the info and you're reminding me that I have heard also from others that Da vinci's gouache is underwhelming... Thanks again!
@ninamarie6010 күн бұрын
I love DaVinci watercolor, it's my go-to, but the DaVinci gouache, while really great for what it is, is a bit different from most professional gouache formulations as it's pure pigment in binder with absolutely no white added. As long as you know you have to always mix at least a bit of white in, those 37 ml tubes are an excellent deal, as is the huge 110 ml tube of white. It's a pretty limited palette, though, as their watercolors and oils seem to be their main focus.

Oh I'd love to have both sets...not sure it's in the budget right now, but maybe closer to Christmas it will get marked down again. It's great to watch you do art stuff and show us these beautiful colors. I have been neglecting my art too long. I've been very distracted with some traveling (2different trips) and we're having some work done on our house. I've also been "momentarily" distracted by watching advent calendar openings. I don't buy them, mind you, (the high-end designer & skin care ones can begin in the hundreds of $$$ and go up from there.) But admittedly they are kind of fun to watch some of them....for a while. But really, with a few exceptions, they should just be called "way overpriced excessive consumption calendars" because none of the ones I've seen have anything to do with "advent," (the days leading up to Christmas) in its original meaning or usage, which according to Google AI and in the American tradition: "Advent calendars often feature small treats behind the doors, such as a Bible verse, toy, or piece of chocolate." Like Christmas itself, it became over-commercialized and not even close to the original intent. Oh well. 🤔 Thanks & Happy Holidays to you & your family, Irit!

I got a couple of yarn advent calendar last year but all in all I don't like buying stuff I don't even know if I need so I'm not a fan of these calenders... @@iritlandgraf True but they dry down well if that's the way you work (which I do). I've only gone over to Schmincke and Daniel Smith when there are things I can't get in WN/Holbein. The DS Buff Titanium Gouache in particular. I've had Holbein Tubes dry rock hard on me so let's see if perhaps the initial investment in DS means they last longer in the tube?

Hello Irit! Hello everyone! Irit, thank you for the thorough overview on this set. Because I am rather brand loyal, (Sennelier, Schmincke, Daniel Smith, Van Gogh) I’ve NEVER tried Roman Szmal. Thinking about your video (excellent as usual) I have a few conclusions. 1. Companies in Europe seem to have a … style? Color scheme ? That’s consistent by brand. Sennelier are not a first choice for all watercolorists but there is a flavor to their colors I find irresistible. Schmincke, Rembrandt, & Roman Szmal have distinct *styles* as well - I think that’s super cool!!! I love the option of granulating and separating watercolors but I like the idea of a few sprinkled into a set, not every color needs to be able to do that. Lastly, I’ve been in editing phase on my book-in progress- digital edits, not painting. Today’s video reminded me I need to ensure I make time just for playing again. Thanks for that. Happy holidays everyone, for those who observe✨ for those who do not, I hope the last weeks of 2024 are peaceful ✨
