I review a lot of fantasy gaming miniatures, and point out that there are some things about them that wouldn't work even in a fantasy world.
Support me on Patreon: / lindybeige
I make no criticism of the quality of the sculpting, which is mostly very high. Instead, I criticise (and sometimes praise) the design.
I was amused to see that on the Reaper Miniatures web-site the figures are described as "25mm Heroic Scale Fantasy Miniatures" which seems to me to be a contradiction. If these figures are '25mm' they must measure from the chin to the knee.

Ahaha! A true conanesseur of the genre! Someone has at last recognised the true function of D&D body sculpting and armour - its not to protect the wearer but to confuse, amaze and slow down ones opponent as to which bit is most amusing to hit first while you slyly eviscerate him/her/it with that hidden shiv you're wielding quite openly in your cleverly disguised mouth scabbard! Which even eagle-eyed Lindy hasn't spotted - an uncommon lapse of attention there sirrah! Excuse me, there are two gentlebeings awaiting me at my front door wearing white surcoats. Why my front door is so attired I know not but I suspect I may be gone some time.

People need to recognize the reality of a truly muscular physique. When Arnold Schwarzenegger was in the Conan movies they had to change the choreography because he couldn't do a lot of the sword movements. His lats were too big. His back and chest muscles actually restricted his movements. Costuming was a nightmare for the same reason. My husband was a body builder for years and, for that time, it was really hard for him to run. His huge thigh muscles burned a hell of a lot of energy and actually weighed him down. When he decided to work out like a normal person and cut WAY back on leg days, his run improved remarkably as his legs lost their mass. (I'm completely fine with him not killing himself anymore, but I did like that big bootie.) Big muscles slow guys down by a lot. REALLY big muscles interfere with silly things like putting your damn arms down by your side. It's not normal and what it takes to get that way isn't healthy. It's no more realistic than it is for women to be 5'10" and weigh 115 lbs. It's okay to be an average, healthy person.

When I did labouring work, like swinging heavy scythe all day cutting hop bines, I couldn't do rapid actions at sport like bowling fast in cricket. And wielding lighter sickle to cut the top strings left my hands like stiff claws. I was very strong, but lost flexibility and speed. Video must have popped up after seeing one of his history talks. Never did get the fantasy stuff with figures imagined by folk with no idea about biology and physics who objectify unreal female figures who all have a super-power of being impervious to cold

@@cuebj I studied physical anthropology and evolutionary biology in college. LOTS of medical textbooks. I see the world the same way that you do. Basic biology is my trigger. It's funny what ruins fiction for people. My husband was a soldier for 30 years. Any movie with something military totally destroys his suspension of disbelief. He's rolling his eyes at the patches and uniform discrepancies. "The Hurt Locker" murdered his soul. There's a scene where the guy sees a wire, pulls it, and inadvertently tugs a bunch of 155 mm projectiles. Those things weigh 90 pounds each. One of my husband's first jobs in the army involved moving those things and they weigh 90 pounds apiece. It was a BIG DEAL that he was capable of carrying four at a time. (After all, he *was* a weightlifter.) There's NO WAY a guy could ignorantly tug on a wire and drag half a dozen anywhere without realizing that he had a problem.

So even though I basically have the body I want, my own image of myself doesn’t allow me to see it lol I just realized I’m that big ass dog that doesn’t realize he isn’t a little lap dog. A friend of mine was once asked to cut a watermelon with his sword. After doing so, he told me that the hard thing was to adapt the strenght of his slash, in order not to damage the table. The table had a little mark on it, but nothing more appearent than classic cuts to a wooden outdoor table. I believe it was not the first time he did it. Edit : the watermelon was cut quite clean, at least in my memory. Sword was a bastard sword, used in reenactment combat. Obviously not sharpened. My assumption is that the speed of the slash might compensate with the thickness of the blade. Might depend on the style of cake too. You might want to prefer quite solid ones.

Whenever I see the undead having an undead motif, I just assume that they're from a culture that saw necromancy as a valuable tool rather than as a heresy. In fact, they may even use undeath as a reward for the greatest champions and leaders, being able to defend the kingdom even in death. Were that the case, the undead motif sets them out as the elite forces of this state.
@vonskyme9133
@vonskyme9133 3 жыл бұрын
It can also depend on the world. I've seen one where the undead, at least the more powerful ones, maintained intelligence and a sense of self. They created an entire functioning economy, where population growth was through nearby kingdoms sending anyone who wouldn't stay dead to be 'tamed' and reminded of their humanity. They went big into undead imagery, at least around outsiders, because they found most others were expecting it and more comfortable around a skeleton with glowing eyes and spikes than one in a bathrobe. They also got offended when outsiders couldn't tell their gender. Do you think we all look alike? Lifeist!

Kings and lords knew of it, and some of the monster hunters did too, but most just thought undead were evil, and that horrible kingdom was a massive threat... while the upper levels traded, got magic services from them and the like, all in response for sending undead to them to be saved, not destroyed. 24:40 Funnily enough, that one's intentionally meant to look silly, because that's the anti-paladin from the Pathfinder player handbook. He's one of the icons of a class which is contractually obliged to be an evil bellend or they lose their powers and that particular fellow's favorite pastimes include kicking puppies and making paladins choose between dueling him to the death and saving burning orphanages, which he himself set on fire. He is very much a joke character.

@@beskamir5977 I have managed to print some beautiful 1/72 figures using Prusa Mini, but yeah, it's often hit and miss. Two subsequent identical prints can come out in vastly different quality. Thin parts and steep angles don't seem to be as much of a problem as overall detail density. Splitting models into pieces helps a ton with that. From what I've gathered about resin printing, I wouldn't trade the convenience and sturdier output for the details. And for example individual flat walls of a house are way easier to print on FDM, while resin requires odd angles and supports. They both have pros and cons, everything depends on individual priorities and circumstances.

@@fatpenguin0089 No, I mean like knights roundabout the time of and after the 1st Crusade where long mail skirts and tabards/tunics that could reach anywhere between bellow the knees to down to the ankles were very commonplace - both ceremonially and in battle. Similar styles would persist all the way through the 12th and 13th centuries and only start going away with the introduction of jointed, rigid armor in the 14th. If you want to go to ancient times, though, there were certain bronze age panoplies which could reach to or just bellow the knees. Also long coats or other ankle or near-ankle-length clothes or armor were worn by various types of nobles and men at arms in the Balkans, Russia and among all the different Turks clear through the 19th century(not counting modern great coats or anything of the like meant to be used by men with firearms). Indeed same reason there are so many ground reaching billowy cloak too - the ankles in white metal might bend if dropped, but can hold a bulker model upright otherwise - the softer bonesium material just isn't stiff enough to hold Mr Apollo and his trainee's epic upper body muscles on the tiny if properly scaled ankle. The newer Black bonesium is much better for that - a bit more akin to the citadel warhammer plastic mini's in material properties. Personally I tend to cut the telegraph poles off and put a bit of piano wire in their place - stiff, strong and much better scaled. The weapon heads I often keep, but maybe trim down - as being obviously an axe barbarian from across the table is good - properly scaled the axe, mace and swords would all be almost featureless rods, different from the spear and quarterstaff only in lenth. So useless as a gaming piece.

As an experiment, I tried making some 3D printed minis in accurate proportions once, using CG models scaled to 1/48 of their normal size to match modern 32mm minis. About "cloaks in the gale": it is a very common way to show movement in static art, that is the reason why comic heroes often had cloaks.

Speaking as someone that has ordered a lot of minis from Forge World: Try heating up some water and using the hot water to heat up the sword and gently bend it back. For chunky bits of resin, the best thing is either a heat gun or a hair dryer. Just be careful and don't use too much heat. It's easier to add heat, but a lot trickier to take it out.

The heat method does work, but Bones are not resin, they're a PVC plastic. Downside: spray paint accelerants can damage the plastic and also the paint may stay tacky forever. Upsides: It's far more durable than forgeworld resin...or pewter...or hard plastic, basically it beats any GW model for durability. Also thick acrylic paint is an ideal base coat, no primer needed.

A point about cloaks: they are absulutely fine if you throw them behind your back, especially just semiscircular ones. By doing that, they become slightly shorter. If you have a quiver on your back, the straps hold the cloak together and prevent it from flailing around. (My experience from larping in a group as Ithilien rangers)

I mean, aside from the often seen dairy scale busts and/or junk filled trunks, most of those are just lithe and slightly muscular/athletic, which is a thing that's reasonably easily done. I do it with a pretty minimal daily effort (those figurines really didn't look "worryingly thin" to me.), so someone with an active profession would do it by default. Or should we expect them to be battling with overweight? The bikini armors and spaulders of overcompensation are ridiculous, however.
@devin5201

I guess more so than the their build it's more about the prevalence of like two or three body types, back when I used to practice martial arts the women that attended classes next to me were of quite varying builds and to clarify I mean even after they'd been in class for years and had more than proven how friggin tough they had become.

@@devin5201 Oh, yeah. Single body syndrome is more than common. Especially in video games (where it can be somewhat excusable), but also in many other places. You pick, like, 1-3 body archetypes per sex and stick to it for _everything._
