Just when I thought I had seen every piece of footage related to The Shining, I find this! Loved Scatman in One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, too!

Great interview. Scatman seemed like such a chilled and good natured gentleman. His song to Kubrick was bouncy and fun. I loved him as Halloran in The Shining. He added a little of his typical light charm when talking to Danny at the beginning, to his absolutely terrified face later when he saw visions of what was about to happen at the hotel. His expression would make anyone's blood turn to ice. The world lost Scatman too soon. We need more people like him. Thanks for sharing this.

I can only image bards and story tellers of the medieval times were exactly like Scatman. He's just the best. He also wrote a song for other celebrities he has worked with and song it to them. This was just a normal thing for Scatman to do. Watch the "No small parts" doc on him. he seemed like a great man.

One of the originals crossing racial barriers way before it was popular, Scatman Crothers should be remembered as a gentle and talented man, a man who got along with people all around him through his talent and Dignity. There are many well known actors who do not deserve half the fame that Scatman should have had, may his legend continue to grow.

He died only 5 years after the interview, so sad, he was such a lively man.

Genuinely lively. He plays music when everyone's bored as hell, waiting for sessions or interviews. We were robbed of a soul that brightens others. Imagine Mr. Rogers but black and with music instead of Christianity. If we had both of them around now, the world wouldn't be as bad as it is.

Thanks for sharing, it's great to keep these things alive, lest they be lost in time.

“Great” is the most overused word, but if you’re going to use it in its most truthful sense, then save it to describe this man both as as actor and as a human being. I googled interviews of Scatman Crothers to see him talk about doing over 100 takes for a scene in The Shining. I wanted to see if his friendly calm attitude turned into frustration by Kubrick’s extreme obsession with multiple takes. As I expected, Scatman was unscathed and remained sunny and cool and collected as ever in spite of Kubrick’s approach which shattered the nerves and angered other actors especially Shelly Duvall. I love him so much as a person and an actor.

He may handled it better than some, but I think he certainly didn't enjoy it. Supposedly when he was in Clint Eastwood's Bronco Billy shortly after this he expressed gratitude to Eastwood for being a "get it on the first take" type director....basically telling him he was relieved after the experience he had on The Shining.
