Whatever about the use of “blackface” and the racist overtones of this sketch, but it was merciless bullying, Jason Lee showed enormous strength of character to overcome it. Baddiel is now the self-appointed champion of tackling anti-semitism, which of course is a cancer, but this was shocking - I found the bullying far worse than his “of the era” use of blackface, bullying wasn’t cool in ‘95 either, let alone racist bullying. It’s shameful behaviour from Baddiel and Skinner, they both owe a fulsome apology to Jason Lee.

David Baddiel seems to have an overwhelming sense that he's right, whatever he does. If he hadn't kept doubling down, he could reasonably own it now, but he knew exactly what he was doing. Baddiel doesn't whitewash that it was racist. He writes in his recent book about antisemitism: "...the make up and costume in that sketch were extremely ill-judged and a mistake....being made-up in that way has antecedents in a very bad racist tradition. We shouldn't have done it, and I have apologised publicly on various occasions since". He goes on to write a couple of pages later: "This is not an attempt to excuse me dressing up as Jason Lee (which was racist)." He admits it was racist then too. It wouldn't have been an issue if Baddiel had only "dressed up" like Jason Lee. The problem is he "blacked up" like Jason Lee. Different time? Yes, to an extent. 1995. But nearly two decades after The Black and White Minstrels had been taken off the air (in 1978, the same year that Rock Against Racism began). Fourteen years after the Brixton Riots and the Scarman Report. Two years after Stephen Lawrence was stabbed to death. Baddiel is rightly sensitive to antisemitic abuse both on and off the terraces. Unfortunately, this ridicule and depiction caused Lee to suffer racial abuse on the field (which Baddiel doesn't mention in his book). That doesn't mean Baddiel should be solely hung out to dry. Skinner, the producers, the network, and everyone who watched and laughed along share responsibility. But Baddiel agreed to do it. As he himself now admits, he should have known better.

@@bfunirfeyh5822 I'm not defending it. I'm explaining why it was indefensible.
@bfunirfeyh58222 жыл бұрын
@@MrSimblock Fair. I agree with what you’re saying. I think also the fact that he was fairly consistently racist in his skits (although he recognises it now), and receiving next to no consequences from it (unlike Lee), feels like it does slightly disprove his point a bit that antisemitism is the most overlooked form of racism (which I don’t massively disagree with). That’s not to say at all that he shouldn’t be allowed to write or talk about antisemitism (obviously), just that it’s quite hypocritical when he’s faced no considerable consequences for his past actions.
@MrSimblock2 жыл бұрын
@@bfunirfeyh5822 Not only is Baddiel allowed to write and talk about antisemitism, he has become the go-to public face of jews talking about antisemitism (as if there is a single voice within the disparate jewish community). As you imply, that should be problematic given his self-confessed racist mockery of Lee over several weeks on FANTASY FOOTBALL (and failure to apologise to Lee's face until recently - it felt very self-conscious not to describe himself in his recent book JEWS DON'T COUNT as blacking up or using blackface in the show; only that he 'dressed up' like Lee). But it hasn't lead to any consequences, as far as I can see (aside from negative comments on social media). Baddiel's books and programmes about anti-semitism continue, often with celebrity opinion standing in for informed analysis. For a serious read about anti-semitism in the UK, read the Community Security Trust's annual report on the subject, which has real data, context, and analysis. Anti-semitism has a genuine paradox that Baddiel's arguments fail to discuss. He wants it to be regarded as a special form of racism, deserving its own name, yet at the same time he wants jews to receive the same level of "anti-racism" attention as other ethnic groups who tend to all get bundled together, and receive more attention. It ironically exemplifies the jewish dilemma about assimilation - how much is too much? Should jews throw their lot in with other groups who suffer racism, or should they stand apart, under their own banner? By and large, this dilemma is a luxury not afforded other ethnic groups, whose visual appearance makes them immediately visible, and therefore immediately vulnerable to both the kind of systemic racism from birth most British jews are highly unlikely to experience, and the kind of treatment at the hands of people like Lady Hussy, or worse.

I’m so sorry Jason what you had to endure this is absolutely disgusting and appalling it really is and they should have put a stop to this. It should never been allowed absolutely infuriated by this this is bullying and an absolute mockery of a great man.

News flash...Its called a joke. He's got a pineapple on his head. He wasn't a prolific striker. AND his haircut was like a pineapple style. They took the piss out of lots of footballers. Race NEVER came into it.

He means because he misses a lot of chances in front of goal he would also miss the letter box.

If this is bullying then EVERY Spitting Image sketch ever made requires a personal apology to politicians. And Jason Lee DID miss an awful lot of goals. I'm impartial. I think football is shit and resent it taking up so much news and screen time. No apologies from me.

I remember watching this as a kid and it never once made me think about his race. It was all about the fact that he was very badly out of form and kept missing and happened to have an unusual hairstyle on top of that. If you're doing an impression of someone and trying to look like them then of course you would change your skin tone to help with that, nothing to do with blackface. If it was a white guy (or a person of any race) playing so badly and had a look that stood out they would have mocked him too, i'm so sure of it. We've definitely gone backwards because none of these sketches made me think about race at the time and I think most people felt that way too. Nowadays i'm being forced to think about the race of people all the time which is sad. It was cruel but also totally normal behaviour from any footy fans at the time so not really a big deal and there's nothing to apologise about really. It couldn't happen now because we've lost so many of our freedoms to express ourselves but at the time it was fine. Maybe the only negative thing was that it went on for a bit too long and they could've moved onto someone else to joke about more quickly.

That's your experience. What about the experience of any black person watching it? Or not watching it but having to go to school the next day and having people do exactly the same thing to them because 'at the time it was fine'?

@@alfieb6711 I'm sure a lot of black people found it funny at the time too because it was about his hairstyle and how bad he was at football and nothing to do with his race. They probably wouldn't find it funny now because people like you make everyone obsessed with racism

it was funny at the time. Opinions and social attitudes change over time and now this would be seen as unnaceptable. i remember the show well back then and never saw it as anything other than piss taking. Didnt think of it as racism or even bullying. obviously now this has changed but time changes many things.

Making fun of a black man's hair and black facing... That's straight Racism. I know times were different then but that should not be an excuse and they should at least acknowledge that they can see how its wrong... and besides, take away the Racism that's straight bullying.
