I am an old dude and was around back in the day when this song hit the market - 1968. I was 18 and what I love about this song is how almost everyone reacts to it when first hearing it unless your dead or deaf. It makes you move like tap your toes bob your head swing your body side to side. Did that to me at 18 and still does at 74, love this song.

The music of the 1960s-70s was rooted in a revolutionary (and psychedelic!) counterculture... When corporate control was cemented over that music (described beautifully, and cryptically on Hotel Cali by the Eagles), that countercultural influence was rather systematically obliterated. Thank the gods we still have that era to look back to!

As already mentioned: Steppenwolf's songs can stand by themself, but with the movie "Easy rider" they become iconic in the end of the 60's. "Born to be wild" even more! And "The pusher". Jimi Hendrix with the song "if 6 was 9" is also music from the same film.

Fast forward 27 years my #1 5 yr old grandson heard this song for the first time while riding in my bus and he loved it. Every time we would go anywhere he would hop in the back seat buckle in and tell me to play that song. The rock band Steppenwolf takes us on a “Magic Carpet Ride” (1968). Hermann Hesse’s novel Steppenwolf (1927) includes a “Magic Theater,” where the protagonist Harry Haller is able to explore the pieces and potential of his discombobulated self. Eventually, Harry sees that his hyper-intellectualism and disgust with bourgeois ways have stifled him to the verge of suicide. He has to learn to laugh.
