Shoot-Out Video Idea: Mesa Amp + Cab, vs Orange Amp + Cab, vs Mesa amp + Orange Cab, vs Orange Amp + Mesa Cab. You said that the matched ones sound best, but I'd be very curious to hear what the differences are and make my own opinion. Not that I'm calling you wrong, just personally curious is all. That’s a good point, Mal. They’re both so similar to each other I would not doubt some careful EQ could get one to sound like the other. Still I’d be curious what the natural characteristics are.

Can confirm that Chevelle sounds huge live for only a three piece band. Ive seen them three times now and the most recent time they had some technical issues with the bass in the middle of a tune and they sounded just as heavy as the other band on the lineup.... with only drums and guitar playing...

Chevelle sounds sooo huge. Saw em with A7X in Winnipeg. Apparently they layer his guitar at least 4 times on albums...so I dunno how he does it live. And you can never go wrong with a PRS.

Orange cabs has Celestion vintage 30s, which is also in the Traynor cab I have, along with my Boss Katana’s Marshall preset sounds amazing. I would get an orange amplifier head, but I’ve grown fond of the Marshall sound with Vintage 30s so I might use a Marshall head with and Orange can.

The Traynor darkhorse 212 with the removable back plates and loaded with greenbacks is the MOST underrated cab of all time and you can regularly find them used for around 500$ here in Canada My band recorded an album this past spring and I used one on a few tracks

I don't have a Mesa but I do have an Orange Dark Terror, an Orange closed back 2x12, and an EVH 5150 iii 4x12. The Dark Terror sounds infanitly better through the Orange Cab.

I’ve owned both 212’s at one point, I currently have a orange ppc 212, they sound almost the same however the Mesa has more resonance and pushes more air, the orange isn’t as resonant and has a little tiny bit too much too end. They both sound good I kept the orange because of the pop punk aesthetic my band was going for.

That PRS is just insane. I got to open up for Dark New Day and Chevelle for a couple shows years ago. They were damn tight. So was DND. Got to meet them all and DND was very cool and embracing of us and invited us on their bus and were just......like that. The Chevelle dudes were more like......just chillin on the their bus kinda guys. But I did meet them and they were nice and I stood and talked to their drummer for a few and he was really nice. But yeah.....tight live. My guitar player was using my guitar on one of those nights and swung it and hit the bass player on the back and the headstock just shattered.

RE: Mesa vs Orange 2x12: The Chinese speakers in the Orange made it an easy choice to get the Mesa. It screams of cost cutting for Orange to do that.

I have an older orange ppc212 closed back, I swear it feels so sturdy I could airdrop it from the upper atmosphere and it would slightly scuff the tolex. But like you said, orange amps sound and look best with orange cabs. I wouldn't mind owning either a mesa or an orange.

The best guitars are any guitar with Eddie Van Halen's name on it. Dude has done everything there is to do to a guitar to get the best tone out of it. From woods, to pickups, to how things are mounted, to the floyd rose, just everything.

ORANGE all Day/ It's true that the Rockerverb Sounds incredible in a 2x12 cab/ Perfect fit. I've had the Mesa 2x12 which was matched w/ my ENGL Fireball head N Meh it's O k. Now It's matched w/ the Engl 2x12 cab n sounds downright Destructive. So I think your right to a degree the cab's are loaded Vintage 30's but they do match perfectly w/ the appropriate Head. The Rockerverb III does sound supreme w/ the 212 cabinet. Wouldn't mind to see a review on sum ENGL gear....

I have to agree with your thoughts on Chevelle when it comes to them sounding huge live. Had a conversation about it with my cousin, he though they sucked and that a7x was 100× better. Then again, my cousin uses all the gain, all the bass and no mids yet claims to have the best guitar tone.

Roger Neeb they are worth the risk. Just factor in cost for new everything pretty much, pickups, internal components, tuners, and last but not least - a fret level! That's about a $200 addition to the price but it's worth it in the end. The sustain and tone is great. Just make sure you find one with good reviews and the right look (knobs placed in correct position) and request pictures of exact guitar before they send it and you'll be a happy customer.

Landry Saathoff I had a PRS McCarty with a rosewood neck and still have a singlecut with a rosewood neck. I have also played a bunch of other guitars with rosewood necks. A rosewood neck tends to have a hi-fi effect on the sound: the top end and bottom end are expanded. Compared to mahogany, the midrange seems to get shifted down, frequency wise. The net effect is a tonality that is bigger sounding than with a mahogany or maple neck. They also feel fantastic and are absolutely rock solid. That said, from MY experience, they really do add a different flavour, which may or may not be your thing. Personally, I prefer mahogany and maple necks. Definitely I recommend trying a guitar with a rosewood neck before you buy. I know you asked Fluff, but I definitely have some experience on the topic, so hopefully that helped ya! ✌
