I've been watching random videos while searching "collecting" and "why collect" and this is by far the best one I've come across. Informative and well structured. Even though this is an older video, I'd like to weigh in on the "help I need to quit it's taking over my life! What do I do?" question. I've been heavily collecting retro games for a while now, and I've faced that myself...cartridges can take up A LOT of space, and as our family has grown our space has naturally had to give way. For me, this was a change in mindset. If you enjoy your collection, "quitting" will generally not be a successful strategy. What I did was change my mindset from "collecting" to "curating." This may sound a little trite, like you're just changing the name of your hobby to be more fancy and thus justifiable, but to me the difference is between collecting ALL THE THINGS and laser-focusing your collecting to a subset/theme. You're going to have to make some hard choices and will take some personal discipline, because its' going to naturally force you to pair your collection down. Selling/donating/giving away pieces of your collection so everything left fits your theme is going to suck. It just is. However, I promise you will feel better about both your space AND the collection itself when you're done. Give that carefully curated collection a dedicated space, whether it be a room or just a shelf if that's all you can afford, but make that space special. That will help to reinforce the choices you've made and still make your collection shine. All your future purchasing choices will need to reflect the "curated theme" you've chosen, which too, is going to suck at times. You'll likely find yourself occasionally letting something go that you would have in the past REALLY wanted to add to your collection, but now no longer has a place. This is really for someone who find that their collection is literally taking over their space/life and not in a sarcastic sense. However, as Renae stated at the start, choosing the direction of your collection when you start a new collecting hobby (which is basically what the above is all about) can help you avoid being buried in your hobby rather than enjoying it. But I digress.

O-ring binders are the death of cards if you flip through them often. I really recommend buying a proper portfolio or D-ring binder meant for CCGs like an Ultimate Guard or (the best in my opinion) DeckTutor Four.
@LoftySkinner8 жыл бұрын
The Dex Binder 9 is also great, and the only one with a velvet interior (not faux, but real velvet) You really don't want to be saving money on the thing that's protecting your collection. In fact, even if it means you can't afford to grow your collection as fast, still go with the more expensive binder. (Stay away from officially licensed ones whether it's Magic or Pokémon) EDIT: And the UltraPro sleeves are really low rung and split easily, Dragon Shield is much more reliable (in fact they often don't split if you try to split them with force) That's more for people who play though, as shuffling is often the cause for splitting.
@josephlaroza5 жыл бұрын
@@LoftySkinner hi Skinner. I believe the ultra pros reformulated their sleeves and are rated much higher now.

@leetwizard702910 жыл бұрын
A lot of this applies to Magic: The Gathering too, most likely. Boxes generally have a set number of mythic rares [equal to ultra rares], and although they cost like 100$ for 36 booster packs, 100 / 36 = 2.777...778, so you're paying about 2.75$ per booster pack rather than 4$ each. Box prices do vary, as do singles. For example, Theros, a set that is out for a while now, is 100$ to buy a box while Khans of Tarkir, a set that's not out yet, is 110$ to preorder a box. Tins are also similar to Fat Packs from MTG, they aren't the best deal but come with a couple of benefits. For MTG, the main website that you're going to use is StarCityGames. I *STRONGLY* recommend Dragon Shield, but not the Matte or Metallic. It's about 10$ for 100 very high quality card sleeves, and they are the best at keeping air out, which is good if you collect foils.

If you have no one around you that is into it, it is much harder. I am in a pretty small town and don't have many people into pokemon or anything around. If that's you, I recommend you not focus on actual cards, instead try Pokemon TCG Online. It can match you up with other online players around the world. You can find more information on that on the pokemon website. And for the video games (x, y, etc) find someone you can trust online or on a forum to add for something like a trade or friend safari.

So far I've pulled Full Arts of Charizard, Magnezone, Toxicroak, Pokemon Fan Club just from those Haxorus/Machamp 3 packs. I've also pulled 5 Full Arts and 1 secret rare from Dragons Exalted booster packs bought from Walmart and Meijer. I've actually never had good luck with booster boxes, I've bought 6 and pulled maybe 15 ultra rares out of over 140 ultra rares I've pulled from packs and blister/promo boxes after 1 year of collecting. I've pulled 2 ultra rares in a single tin/pin 3 pack at least 4 times now. My record is 3 ultra rares in 6 booster packs, and it's happened twice.

Another thing about buying binders: just wait until stores start having back-to-school sales. you can always get binders for a pretty good price during that time.
@jjsrt88 жыл бұрын
I'm more of an old school guy I want all the cards I had growing up being base set 1 and 2. I know they're expensive now but that's the beginning and really my favorite loved the characters and the cards were like art. I think they're worth buying especially if you spend so much on the new stuff go back and get the beginning as they'll just continue to go up in value over the years. Everyone collects what they like though and that's great too.

Great Tips !! I started collecting about 3 years ago and back then packs were still pretty cheap ( somewhat ), I remember going to shops where the packs were out in the open. I had bought at least dozens of packs from that shop and had never gotten more than a Holo. So I got pissed and switched shops, next thing I knew, I had a full page of EXs, so my own personal tip, would be to get the 3 pack blisters or shops where the packs are omly accessible via the counter because the packs are not weighed.

Hey Renae!! Very informative and interesting vid. indeed, older boxes are expensive, but saying "it's too expensive. I can't afford that" shuts down your brain. One way to save money is to use old card game folders that weren't too popular. I use Match Attack folders that come with the 9 pockets per page (about 100 pages). They are super cheap and you can replace the artwork at the front and back. Only problem is they are a little flimsy as no hard back usually.

Am not where you are but some of this helped! Only issue is if the set you want to collect ie: Generations and they aren't sold in booster packs/booster boxes then you have to buy the promo stuff to get them! As the current ones of these are only sold in the 20th Anniversary packs! Seems to have a very decent pull rate though! But that means there are occassions where what you want to collect is unable to be gotten in booster boxes! Looked this up people are selling loose 36 packs of these with no booster box online for 400 plus dollars cause they don't come in this! I feel in this case its more affordable to buy the boxes than from those people that are trying to rip others off for an extortionate amount of money I would not have straight up! Just my opinion anyway! But good video thanks some of the tips do help and make sense! Normally you are right about the booster boxes! Unfortunately sometimes that is not possible!

+Dakota Dugger that depends on how the cards were stored and what cards are in the collection unfortunately because you likely opened the packs they are probably not worth too much, also if the cards are not 1st edition that drastically affects the value. 1 thing you could do is look up the individual cards on Ebay or other sites to get an estimate and go from there.
