As some of you maybe have noticed, there was no video posted last week. A rather uninteresting historical event, however connected to an interesting one: John Williams in Berlin. As two years ago in Vienna, Fred made a pilgrimage to see the master. So, I hope this excuse will be accepted by you. One of the pieces Williams presented there together with the Berliner Philharmonic Orchestra, was the suite (or End Credits) from “Far And Away” (1992), a delicious mixture of adventure, drama and romance, starring Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman and directed by the very talented Ron Howard. In Berlin Williams himself noted that he always had been looking forward to score an Irish-movie in the tradition of Hollywood composers like Victor Young, which needs a different (orchestral) color-palette and feature a ‘Donnybrook’, a fun-piece to bring the orchestra to sweat and support the actors on screen during their fist fights (where nobody gets much hurt). Besides that, Williams achieved to write some wonderful music for “Far And Away”, including the love theme, which is featured throughout the movie and the very sumptuous “Land Race”. Enjoy!

Awesome! Truely an event not to miss! I've heard about it. He must be around 90 now... He won't be travelling much in the years to come, so of course seeing John Williams conducting live is more important than uploading a video. 😉

Thank you so much for posting this! This was one of my favorite movies as a teenager, and also one of my favorite film scores ever. It was one of my first scores (after Jurassic Park) and I listened to it constantly. I have always been surprised at what little recognition this score has gotten over the years - it is absolutely epic and emotional!

Very complex score. Wonderful work distilling it down. Applause for Fred and, of course, the master John Williams.

If any of you have ever visited the "Guinness Hop Store" attraction in Dublin Ireland then you've accidently visited a set from "Far And Away" as it's the place where Shannen gets off the boat in the USA and where her spoons get spilled on the ground.

Quite nice; a lot of it sounds similar to "Titanic" I guess because they were influenced by Irish music.

Good music but not the best Irish score nor the best Irish period film. That would be Angela's Ashes which was also scored by John Williams and is an infinitely better film than this mushy drek which as someone of Irish blood who has actually visited Ireland south and north is much truer to Ireland itself. And it isn't enough to claim Irish descent until and unless you set foot there you have no concept of Ireland or Irish culture.
