Playing on the realistic difficulty changes the behaviour of the AI and their durability very early in the game. On any of the other difficulty settings, you would expect opponents with helmets only near the end of the game, instead you'll encounter them as early as in level 3 (Fort).
In short, you can expect enemy headshots to be one-hit kills (even with armor!), you take exponentially more damage upon body shots, allowing you to die in no more than three of four shots. Armor is key to survival, but ultimately provides almost no additional cover, being an extension of your healthbar rather than anything else.
Lastly, enemy AI will much more quickly resort to using different strategies, calling in additional help (armed helicopters, land vehicles, boats) and using 'smart' hiding spots and routes to flank you when multiple mercenaries are available.
► TIPS & TRICKS
- Never run and gun on this mode, it means instant death even at the very first camp in the game.
- Always pick up body armour. This is the case on every difficulty, but especially on realistic, as it marginally (but surely) decreases your visibility, and stops most body shots from ripping you apart in seconds.
- Lay low and hide in bushes almost 100% of the time. Mercenaries will almost never notice you on sight when doing so, and allows you to sneak from any direction.
- Use of the single-shot firing mode on the rifles in the game allows for precise shooting from further distances. Make good use of this on the realistic difficulty.
- Land vehicles, like the jeep or buggy, and armed boats are your friends. They allow for easy kills from large distances with rockets and miniguns. In contratry, mounted miniguns on the ground are a death wish, avoid them as they generally expose you in wide-open areas.
- Detonate most explosive barrels if you can, to eliminate multiple enemies at a time.
- Avoid using your flashlight when possible, it is too noticeable. Use your binoculairs to register enemy positions, this is of extreme importance on realistic. Use smoke grenades and flashbangs in small corridors to easily ambush and kill multiple mercenaries.
- The silencer MP5 and the shotgun are your best friends. Use these to silently take down enemies, or blast away the trigens.
- Patience is everything. It's what, in the long run, will allow you to beat every level. Muscle memory is going to be of high importance, knowing most enemy spots beforehand can give you a huge advantage.
► LEVEL TIPS
Arguably the most open world level of all of Far Cry 1, Boat expectedly allows more than a few ways to complete not only Crowe's epic and famous helicopter battle on the sinking ship, but also any of the objectives before that. All the radio towers are located on small and seperate chunks of island in the vast sea all around you, allowing for different angles to approach them and thus move forward. In fact, you can sometimes skip certain portions of the islands entirely if you're smart or knowledgeable, requiring less fighting and/or wasting ammo and utility.
Needless to say, scoped weapons are great to clear an area safely from long distances. The OICW also makes its first appearance, and is a must-have weapon for the remainder of the game.
Crowe's final battle can be done in many ways, but remember to clear the snipers first before approaching the ship. You can either drive a jeep and/or a gunboat to the shore, and swim to either when placing the bomb. These can be used to shoot down the helicopter faster. On realistic, unfortunatly, this most likely will result in a 1-hit KO. You can also swim to the nearest island and hide in the bushes. This is easier to do, but still risky.
Best is to just use cover at all times, and play a game of peek-a-boo with Crowe until he's defeated.

In my game version (with Far Cry Classic Mod) Crown helicopter type is different - a Russian MI with guns on the front. After i set up the explosives i jumped off the ship and swimmed towards the shore. I hid in the bushes so the helicopter pilot didn't see me. I choose this approach after numerous failed attempts to shot him down aboard sinking ship (what a stupid scenario by the way).

Yea, the scenario is quite funny! I too had to redo a lot of takes to finally beat him. It matters much if you are able to hit the helicopter a few times with the sniper first. Stack up on those explosive secondary grenades from the O.I.C.W. and then finish up with the rocket launcher. The damage you get on realistic from Crowe is very random, as you could tell from my video. The first few bullets did almost nothing, the last one almost instantly killed me 😅 I decided to keep the fight on the boat, as to show viewers that you can also do it that way, but the small island method is definitly equally good as it's a smart thing to do, and makes the fight a lot easier.

[pc version ] take the gunboat instead of blowing up the ship you gunboat w by nw from the ship to a sunken volcanic crater island. there is 3 helicopters and a boat. one chopper is Crowe's one is the attack the other can also attack but i don't know why it is there. the boat that picks up Crowe is invisible, you can hear it but you will never find it. only at the end of the game does it become visible. with a lot of practice you can make to the volcanic crater island alive, do it just for the challenge ... job well done, some really nice shooting

That’s certainly the case, and has happened countless times during my recordings of the play through. This happened most frequently on the first level (when approaching the carrier), and on Rebellion. Of course, when creating the videos for KZbin I never include these deaths, because it has to be a flawless play through. Just because they can on realistic, however, doesn’t mean that this happens all the time, which is a big misconception.

If you're talking about the crowe fight it really is easy once you figure out how he moves around in his helicopter(after like the 3rd or 4th try).You can just pre fire your rockets then quickly hide in the cabin the ammo is enough and there's plenty of time to take him down before the boat sinks

Best is to take the N.I.C.W. in any of the previous camps within this level, because its secondary has grenade throws that are fast and easy to fire at the helicopter (and deal good damage). Next-up fire all your rockets, but since they’re slow you’ll have to get the feeling and timing versus the distance of the helicopter. Only use the rocket launcher when he’s very close and standing relatively still. Finally, the sniper rifle deals good damage against both the helicopter and Crow himself. If anything fails, you can shoot him from an island that’s close to the boat (near the shore where you arrive with the jeep). You can hide in the bush and he can’t see you, which can make it much easier... hope that helps!

Except for the P90/MP5, the available ammo for the M4A1/OICW is so plentiful during the entire game that ammo management being an issue is next-to-impossible. This allows me to keep my favorite weapons in the game.

That’s the biggest irony I’ve yet heard so far. I can’t imagine requiring tool-assist for Far Cry 1. Literally, if you understand the engine mechanics and do research on the best strategies to beat the game, realistic isn’t that hard. Only two levels are absolutely insane and required running/ignoring enemies to more easily beat a section, but that’s it. The binocular behavior is truly one of the most important tricks to know in the game, which is why I *never* use the binocs. Just look it up.

Yes, you can. You might have some problems doing that if Patch 1.4 is installed, as it enables the enemies to see you through tents. But there is a couple of well-known ways to fix it.
