There seems to be a disturbing trend immerging in the game industry where older releases, although not as graphically impressive, have a much higher attention to detail and much more of a focus on how the player interacts with the world.

Edit: I feel like maybe, this is incorrect. There are plenty of big budget games that get years of development time, and still don’t have the sort of ‘extra’ details that extend beyond normal gameplay that you sometimes saw a decade ago. I think the comments below about poor management being the case are probably right. Maybe because of longer development cycles. Wouldn’t surprise me if, in the four or five years it took to make a game back then, individual devs had more free time to work on nifty touches in spare time, especially unplanned ones. Shorter development time means less time to add features on the fly.

I think it lies down to the game engine. All new Ubisoft titles use game engines where there's a noticeable lack of physics, weight and interaction. Alot of things like ragdoll are barely in these games anymore, in favour of locking bodies to the ground etc. I hope we see a return to detail and better game engines with these new consoles.

Vito C ikr, It's almost like they're pandering to the masses without taking into consideration the real target audience is right in front of them: Their real, long-time and long-term fans. I played Far Cry 3 and wanted more, so I got Far Cry 4. I thought it was fun and a step up, but wamted more of that man/tiger gameplay, so I got Far Cry: Primal. Loved it. I wanted to see where it all (mostly, Far Cry 1 is terrible) began, so I got Far Cry 2. Definitely a different take, but I enjoyed it all the same. The real fans aren't the ones who buy your game blindly at face value, only knowing the most basic information and making the purchase without taking into consideration all the little details. It's all because the little details and the hidden animations and the tiny, pointless things are what make the games seem more real than they really are. It's what makes the difference between another sequel to a game franchise and a real masterpiece. Same with Assassin's Creed III, IV and Syndicate. Same Combat. Now Assassin's Creed: Origins. That is a masterpiece. It really feels like time was put into it with its fidelity, sense of realism and immersion, the finer things that really do matter actually pop when you look for them and enhance your gaming experience just that much more when you find them. They're what seperate the repetitious games from the true outlying masterpieces.

Something I absolutely love is how the enemy NPCs interact with each other in FC2. They're always communicating to each other, covering each other, playing dead, healing each other, and even flanking the player. The NPCs in FC2 also wear very camouflaging clothes, even as a guy with 20/20 vision trying to find these fuckers is so difficult because they blend in with their environment.

@@mkultrasoldier yeah but a good optimized 3d model won't take much space. High resolution images and audio files will take much space but still maybe, because I have used some modern game engines, I think games these days also ship with unwanted chunks of engine data. Remember in FC4 we get map editor, that wouldn't be possible without an engine or at least it's world editor. In some cases the executable file of the engine becomes the games executable file which hints embedding. (Edit: I know that FC2 had map editor. Johnny Ortega in far cry 3 the story is kinda disconnected from the gameplay after you get a gun you lose all feeling of the character not knowing what he’s doing. He’s an expert with any weapon he grabs and has no problem killing outside of cutscenes. So story wise Jason did transition from scared tourist to killing machine, but gameplay wise he transitioned from killing machine to ultra mega killing machine

Far cry 2 is super interesting to me just because it perfectly encapsulates the difference between immersion and realism. If you watch jonathon ferguson's review of the guns in the game, they get most of it wrong, but despite that, it still feels intense. It doesnt make sense for the ak to explode like that, but while playing the game, feels a lot more tense and immersive. Honestly games in that mid 2000s era are really interesting with their attention to detail and creative uses of physics (fear, might and magic, sr2 etc.). I love that we're no longer in the brown military shooter era of games, but I do miss the emphasis that was put on the player's effect on the environment from ragdoll kicking or minor destructible environments ala gears of war 1.

Far cry 2's NPCs really feel like people, but the way they react to an enemy they can't see is what I actually like about it. For example if you use a mortar on an area (and actually manage to hit it) they go into cover and stay there for a certain amount of time. Same goes with sniper rifles too if you hit one of their friends. Dunno why but that really blew me away when I first played it.

Youre in a gunfight same as any and call for backup from your favorite buddy, you mess up the outpost but then they fall to the ground. You rush over to help them but they're beyond messed up. Your medicine isn't working, and you realize they're not going to make it as they overdose on your morphine instead of returning to their feet. As someone pointed out in a comparison video on RDR2 and FC6. This is the difference when you build a game around physics or build a game and add physics. FC6 is a substantial upgrade over FC5 in that regard but you can really tell that physics where added in. Play 5 minutes of RDR2 and you instantly FEEL the physics of the game. Everything has inertia and a weight to it.

I disagree. Having a tree burn to the ground is cool, but totally unnecessary for the actual gameplay. You know what isn't cool? Having your gun jam in the middle of a fight. Video games don't have to mimic real life completely, none do. No one wants to play a game where you run out of sprint, or have to manually reload magazines etc. It's a great comparison nonetheless.

I feel like, as technology has progressed, publishers have found it easier to market surface-level fidelity. That is, as games are able to look more and more realistic, companies use that as their selling point, as that is the current technological trend. By contrast, when games were only beginning to approach 'realistic' visuals, developers were more eager to put detail into systems that portrayed realism, as fully believable visuals were not yet achievable. It doesn't help that the current-day levels of fidelity are far more expensive to create assets for, furthering that insistence on surface-level touches.

Games like Far Cry 2 and RDR2 are how sequels should be handled. They should always be steps forward in design, not backwards. It's a shame it's become a common trend in the industry.

And you’re part of the reason why devs don’t care anymore. They don’t choose what gets added into the game. The lead devs, and the higher ups do. People constantly shitting on devs for what’s out of their control is what’s leading them to be lazy. The people blaming them cause they don’t know what they’re talking about are only making the problem worse

I think my favorite detail in 2 was weapon conditions. It felt like you were using hyper-recycled guns that hadnt seen proper care in years, and when your weapon jammed it was a turning point in a gunfight, going from about to spray 3 guys around a corner to sprinting for cover. I wish the modern Far Cry games leaned into gun maintenance as much as pokemon leaned into pet simulation.

Christopher Regan I just got it today for $9 and thought it was going to be a freaking great game because the intro looked beautiful. But then I got to the gameplay and yikes....two hours in and I requested a refund on steam already. All these no standard gamers just gave the game 5 stars because it looks good. The gameplay blows and it’s a sharp contrast with the beautiful graphics.

one of the few moments that got to me in games was trying to save a dying friend in FC2, gave one buddy 4 syrettes before they started making death rattles. second time was like in the vid, after 2 or 3 i switched to the pistol and they just asked what i was waiting for before i fired. as someone whos real desensitized to shit, its nice to come across something impactful like that to remember, and that wasnt even something forced on me, i couldve shot them right away, or not helped them at all or not subverted that mission and not had them there in the first place really. other games try and force players to do something and feel bad about it or shock them, but they nailed this.
