That and lack of wildlife plus lack of colour variation. I also feel a flashlight or nightvision could have helped a lot in this game since nights gets daaark. Evertything is a bit brown and yellow. I hope they return to Africa. I also feel modern Far Cry misses potentiall with the nights, to bright and no options to freely use lights and nightvision.

Several notes from someone that played a lot of far cry 2. 1. The game, in tradition with the franchise at this point, handles saves weirdly as it creates a save slot EVERY TIME you quick save. As a person that saved often I managed to get hundreds of saves that increased the size of the game by several GB.... 2. Traveling by water boats is the fastest and most hassle free way to move around as you bypass many outposts. 3. The amount of invisible walls seriously hampers the game and how artificial the land feels, especially considering how little verticallity there is. 4. The wild animals (only herbivores) feel like more like decoration than actual wildlife 5. Enemies NEED to be headshoted by a silenced gun to be able to stealth. Knife kills and bodyshots cause them to scream which alerts their friends, therefore stealth is only possible with silent weapons. 6. To buy all upgrades and guns you need all 1000 diamonds. Thankfully many cars are useless so you don't much need em. 7. MGL is the most op gun in the game. It has so much range and accuracy you don't need a sniper rifle or an explosive weapon. 8. Malaria and weapon degradation are neat features but can be completely negated by preparation. In the end you only gotta go to your armory every once in a while and the pills are generous enough that you can just do the side mission once in a while.

Hidden mechanics like turning off the headlights while driving at night are some of the few stealth mechanics that were incredible to discover. There are no indicators or obvious mechanics to stealth and that made it seem that much more tense and immersive. The AI was tenacious and at times terrifyingly clever, like hiding from sniper fire until they could get into multiple vehicles to charge your position rapidly, or even if you enter a gun store or safe house believing you've lost a pursuing tail, there is a chance they'll be waiting to ambush you the moment you leave. The game is a rather rough and clunky dimond, but its difficulty to traverse encouraged me to play more seriously and plan how I was going to navigate the many roads, rivers, and footpaths through the map just as much as how I would accomplish the mission objective. Some objectives were repetitive, but this was never a problem for me when the location and environments were always different. If I could describe the game in a sentence, it would be: hardcore enough to be unpredictable, hostile, and punishing, but casual enough to explore, experiment, and find any solution on-hand to solve any problem. The experience of failure, often out from under you or due to no fault of your own was frustrating, but was equally gratifying to get creative to find your way out of a bad situation, and plan for new solutions using new weapons, equipment, or a different way of travel to avoid it next. Sure the player may get new weapons and upgraded vehicles, but the player themselves becomes the greatest advantage after gaining more experience. FC2 is a game you can never be truly safe, or master; its a game where you always need to have your whits about you, and expect the unexpected at all times. For that reason it is one of my favorites to date.
@serendipitousslim1529
@serendipitousslim1529 3 жыл бұрын
FC 2 is one of my favorite games of all time. Easily beat it anywhere from 8-12 times, most play throughs being on Infamous difficulty (and on console at that, so no quick saves). It’s definitely not for everyone, and it definitely has shown some age when going back to play it recently. But all of that aside, the atmosphere and the immersion is bar none of any other game I’ve played. The minimal HUD, (mostly) intelligent enemy AI, the gun sounds and recoil, the day and night and weather cycles, the enemy battle chatter, and just the sheer difficulty of it... it all comes together to make a really, really intense and unique atmosphere, and when playing on higher difficulties, it really forces you to take a step back and think about how you wanna tackle your objectives. The game is certainly flawed, but I would love to see a developer (certainly not Ubisoft as they same to have lost all sense of originality) take the ethos and setting of Far Cry 2 and add some polish to it. A modern day soul sequel with an actually well written story and speaking protagonist, a world that feels more alive with civilian NPCs and settlements, predatory wildlife, and buddies who you can actually interact with outside of dying/missions, but whom you could instead call on YOURSELF to help you tackle objectives... man, that could make for a phenomenal game.

I honestly wasn't a big fan of the story. It wasn't bad, it just seemed like a bad fit for an open-world game. It would have been nice if the Jackal had actually existed on the maps somewhere and if the player had actually had to look for information on his location. Same problem with the factions. They are there to provide a linear string of missions to get to the end, nothing more unfortunately. But otherwise I fully agree. The atmosphere and high detail of weather and environments and AI-behaviour are what really elevates this one above most other open-world-shooters. And I have always liked that stealth is more of a precarious option that can fail at any moment. It is a perfectly viable approach, but not easy.

@@burningsheep4473 I don't think the story was bad for open-world at all, it was just delivered poorly and awkwardly due to other various reasons. I don't know how you feel about FC3, but many of that game's objectives are character centric. Save (person), kill (person). But those character's only exist within their specific missions. Nowhere does the game utilize its open-world structure to emphasize story beats. People were more engaged with 3's story because everything was delivered so much cleaner and more cinematic. In FC2, your character actually forgets about killing the Jackal immediately after your first encounter with him. It isn't their goal. The Jackal himself states that "you could tell them you tried, but that means nothing. You had one shot, you blew it, now you're fired. You know it and so do I. And since you only work for money, looks like you gotta find new work." And from that moment on the journal never expresses interest in wanting to kill the Jackal, only to survive malaria and make the country their home (in their own mercenary way). But it's a story beat so badly delivered that nobody picks up on it, even I didn't for a long time.
@burningsheep4473
@burningsheep4473 2 жыл бұрын
@@Ad-im1ne The issue with that is that the Jackal remains central to the story nevertheless and it eventually all comes back to him. What I'm criticizing is mostly just that an open world game with such great atmosphere and immersion is so very old and tired in the story department. FC2 is good at background and the subject matter of the plot fits that of course. But it's very conventional and does have almost nothing to do with other mechanics. Other than being set at locations in the open world and still using FPS-mechanics. But it doesn't really use the freedom of the open world or the factions and neither does it try to do anything with exploration. Oh, and cutscenes of course.
@Ad-im1ne
@Ad-im1ne 2 жыл бұрын
@@burningsheep4473 The Jackal's whole character is built around his mysterious and elusive nature, though. His presence is meant to be felt rather than witnessed in the flesh. Only a single reporter was ever able to find him, probably because The Jackal let him. Making him available on the map, though a potential marvel of narrative branching, would undermine one of his most distinct and fearful qualities. That being said, I think I see what you mean on the linearity of it all. There's a single mission in the whole game which presents moral choice (asking you to either protect your friends or random civilians)... and both decisions have the same outcome promptly afterward. There's also only a handful of optional story related moments which the player finds thorough exploration, yet they're by far the most memorable. Even the best way story intertwined with gameplay was through the reputation system, which was itself obscure, one-dimensional, and only progressed so far as the plot. Maybe it's a tall order for an '08 game which was already innovating in so many other ways, but it's fun to dream of what could've been.

Far Cry 2 was a near masterpiece. I loved selecting between mercenaries with different backgrounds, the setting is gorgeous, the fire propagation still has no equal, the world was gritty and “real,” the malaria and firearm decay were great as it enhanced the drama, The Jackal was far underrated as a villain, and I could continue. When I started playing PC games this was one of my first open world adventure game, amazing game of all time, because it constantly keeps you very busy, yes for some it is too much, but it was so much fun for and some of my friends, also the manual map without pausing the games is just icing on top, also as someone who has finished this game multiple times, game is very very cool, moral of story is a bad merc changes and sacrifice yourself to save a lot of people. I loved this game so much, the realism with weapons is very cool, some of my tips - Start doing new weapon mission from the shop as soon as possible, only use new weapons, change them every time you visit a gun shop, also for stealth missions grab a sniper and somehow for every mission there will be a mountain top position get there and finish them (also buy stealth upgrades and car upgrades from shop), then go and take the outpost, fun game. And the graphics even by todays standard is an amazing looking game, has the best sunrises and sunsets. Also use the buses as much as you can. It is like the taxi system from GTA 4. Also save a lot. Also for every mission you have alternatives to work with your buddies who other main characters you did not chose when the game started, do all of them much needed variety and you will need them when you go down they will come and save you. Also extra diamonds baby, buy all the shop upgrades. Also find the golden guns if you can in game, they never get stuck. I have played this game many many times on PC and never seen any of these bugs.

It was hard on console even in HD. I played it recently for the first time on PC (200+ fps which was orgasmic) and it was night and day as far as being able to spot and down targets in the foliage. He's playing the PC version in this video because it has terrible glitches with all the NPCs which weren't present in the console versions. I prefer being lost and frustrated in the jungle than having a red arrow cursor taking up half the screen indicating the enemy's direction, but that's just my self loathing speaking.

I am glad you decided to talk about far cry 2 While it's not my favorite game in the series I thought it was actually pretty fun haven't played it in a while but it was fun last time I played it .so any who let me just addressed the question in the video 👉👉👉👉👉 "What is going Inside the Head of the main character in farcry 2 " go read the in game notes this the biggest complaint I see people give about the story Why does your character help the two opposing factions ?? Well go read the journals of the main character or read the text in the loading screen its explained there I understand why people are confused about this I was too until I read the in game notes

I was going to comment this as well. The backstory is WHY you're there, and the journals are WHY you're doing what you're doing. The rest you fill in by roleplaying, which is the point of a voiceless character.. Also I didn't have any bugs on PC.

Excuse this very long text. Pretty spot on review. I do disagree about stealth not being a viable option though. The dart rifle can take out any enemy in one shot, but you have to hit the head if you don’t want your target to alert other guards by screaming. It also makes it so that enemies can’t take cover properly since they won’t know where the shots come from; normal snipers will result in enemies taking cover. The NPCs are actually pretty smart and will often act kinda realistically, so the laser vision mentioned in the video might just be that you have been spotted or have used a weapon that is not silent or makes enemies scream out when engaged. The combat is deeper than one might expect, but never properly explained, so it’s not strange at all that most people won’t know these details. But I think it might also be a reason a lot of people like myself love this entry of the series. There’s almost no handholding. For better or worse.
@XxDruidmancerxX

The stealth in the game is imo, more in the vein of "Things WILL go wrong", you either prepare for the inevitable - good balance of weapons, which is why (unpopular opinion here) I loved the weapon limitation, or you do guerilla tactics, sneak in, kill target/destroy something AND THEN RUN. On the topic of gun limitations (Small, medium, big), that forced you to think about a good set of weapons with certain roles "One for demolition, one for stealth, and one for when shit happens". And the boxes that you could leave loaded in advance for stuff you'd like to switch while in the open. That made me avoid the now common "all weapons are basically the same, I'll stick with the one I like the most". Having to buy them (which were also not cheap) also was an important part of this balancing act. Even though there could definitely be some improvements, I still love this game. Super immersive (physical map and all), especially when turning the music off (not a fan of the game's soundtrack unfortunately). Man... makes me wanna play it again lol.

While I can absolutely admit that playing Far Cry 2 is a frustrating experience as it definitely doesn't have many of the features we have come to take for granted in modern open world games. That being said every uncomfortable thing in the game is 100% intentionally there, the character having no voice or motivation? The player character is as one of the quest givers calls you "Just another no name scumbag" this is why you can play as any of the selectable characters at the start it truly does not matter which as they are after the same thing: money. The fast travel only taking you to limited spots on the map? Again intentional they want you to see this massive landscape and experience the full scope of your journey. The weapon degradation? It's a thematic element that everything you touch dies, that nothing is permanent. The entire world being hostile to you? It doesn't stop there the game itself is hostile to the player in almost every way. The developers were clear with their intent the game is a dark nihilistic deconstruction on the fun of a video game.

I'm glad you mentioned stealth being nonexistent. Literally have to park your car a football field away from enemies and crouch the whole distance to even TRY to sneak up on them. One thing you didn't mention that I've been finding annoying is that the vehicles get stuck on EVERYTHING. Not only does every slight obstacle completely kill the vehicle's momentum where you have to do k-turns and shit to get around them, but I have literally lost like a dozen vehicles in my current 7 hour playthrough just from getting permanently stuck on some bullshit like a rock or dip in the terrain. Not to mention having to wrench on the damn thing every few minutes, like you mentioned. That being said, I still enjoy the game and playing it now takes me back to being a teenager when it first came out.

I feel like the fact that you both play as a mute character and get to pick a character means that you are supposed to pick the character that fits you the best and immerse yourself into the game as who you are playing and role-play, And the character’s “lack of motives” can be pretty simply explained as; they were a mercenary hired to kill the Jackal, before being caught up in the chaos of the war raging around them while simply working for money and medication as they hunt down the Jackal to complete their original goal of killing him.

The people that enjoy far cry 2 more than the following far cry games tend to be the chads that don't want to play games on easy mode. It is meant to be brutal, you're not some fucking superhero like in Far Cry 3. People have become way too obsessed with needing fast travel, but fast travel in itself is so fucking immersion breaking and Far Cry 2 actually has a fast travel system that makes sense as you are simply taking a bus, not instantly teleporting to a location. Outposts and camps were never meant to be cleared for eternity as it's not the point of the game, everything you do is futile in the end, you're not some hero that singlehandedly stops wars and conflicts or eliminate all soldiers in an area forever, that is the point. You're just a random mercenary doing dirty deeds for blood diamonds. The difficulty is alright, but could easily be even more difficult and there is a mod that I would shout out which is Tom's mod making Far Cry 2 an even better experience. Not having quicksaves is also a good thing as people have become waaaay too reliant on tapping quicksave constantly and then quickload the second something goes wrong which ruins gameplay as you can just go balls to the fucking wall with essentially zero consequences. I would have advocated for only saving at the save spots in far cry 2, but there is a nasty bug in which you can get stuck without any quest, so the manual saves are alright as getting fucked by such a bug can make you quit.

Stealth being non-existent is a skill issue more than anything else. Firstly, enemies can spot you from farther during the day, so night is the preferred time to attack, although your enemies are more alert then. Secondly, patience is key. I literally count the number of guards around a location and take them down one by one using headshots with the makarov/shotgun or dart. It just is so darn satisfying to clear an entire base undetected. I know the game doesn't count any of that as an achievement but its so much more satisfying. If you want to understand what I'm talking about, play FC3 and try to clear an outpost on stealth after turning off the alert meter. The same in FC2 is about 10 times more difficult because you can't spot enemies through cover in FC2. I agree that things can go wrong horribly in an instant too.

tbh, it's not that stealth is non-existent in this game, it's just far more realistic. Silenced guns aren't truly inaudible, approaching a environmental-aware person isn't all that easy, etc. This game depicts the realism in each of these factors. The gun jams are just out of pocket tho.

Guy with too many hours who plays on infamous here. The core gameplay loop, gunfighting/sneaking past enemies and exploring, is basically the entire game. All objectives from main and side missions are variations of destroy this target or steal this thing. It really is all about the journey, not the destination. That also mostly eliminates the point of fast travel for anywhere but the corners & center. So the single most important thing here is picking fights wisely. The difficulty, among other things, reduces how much ammo, syrettes, throwables, etc you can carry. Replenishment can be found most places there are enemies but typically in limited quantity, aside from ammo boxes, etc. Killing random enemies doesn't accomplish anything beyond wasting ammo and degrading your weapon, but it is quite satisfying. Simple tips: ALWAYS scout an area before going in. You can't tag enemies but you can remember where you last saw them. Stealth is best at night, keep your ears open for enemy presence and if they've noticed you. When in an open fight, accuracy upgrades are your best friend (I typically use assault/LMG/SMG) followed by fire for area denial, forcing enemies out of cover, smoke screened flank or withdrawal, etc. Most important tip: armories/gunshops are the one-stop-shop for everything. Refill all supplies, grab fresh guns (crates too), and save. Save in at least two slots in alternating fashion. NEVER overwrite your only save outside of a safehouse or armory.

One of the things I keenly remember about my time playing FC2 was my seamless and gradual transformation from desperate and scrabbling, where I would creep and snipe, to a MGL and LMG toting monster where I would scout a location and assault it like a natural disaster. I had read "heart of darkness" recently too and you could tell Ubisoft had taken the feel of it to heart. The game was just....brutal. In gameplay, difficulty, and tone. The first time you have to put down a buddy.....ouch. On reflection I don't think I have the time nor the emotional energy to play FC2 like I did when it was released, I mean I'm not sure it was "fun" as it was satisfying, if that males sense. There were no short cuts, just learning the systems, careful planning and patient stocking of your hideout weapon boxes so you would limit the need to scavenge weapons. Anyway, Far Cry 2. Not for everyone, but if you WANT to punish yourself? It hurts so good!

I cant believe you didnt get the story of the game. You are told since the beginning that the Jackal is an arms dealer that is selling weapons to both factions in an African conflict, so the main character is sent by whatever organism to kill him so the lack of weapons ends the conflict. Since he cant be found, the main character works as mercenary to both factions hoping to gain intelligence on the whereabouts of the Jackal. During those missions you see the moral destruction of the main character, because he is forced to do fucked up things to achieve the ultimate goal that will end the conflict. So by the end of the game you have seen the ambiguity and hypocrisy of war, and also of your own, making you wonder whether you really are the good guy. Gives you the feeling that no one involved in war is really the good guy, and its the effect the game is trying to give you, because at the end even the Jackal feels ambiguous and not necessarily good or bad, just one more person creating pain in order to save others.

The only gripe I have with the review is the story segment. The story makes more sense then you let on. You, the protagonist, are a mercenary. You are only driven by money, and the moment you fail to kill the Jackal upon entering the country, the money that was promised to you by the western government that sent you is now void. That is why you are no longer compelled to kill the Jackal afterwards, in his words, "you're fired", and that's why most of the storyline involves you just driving around and killing people in missions, these people are either willing to pay you or have something you need, like new weapons or malaria pills. And that's what makes the Jackal even more compelling at the end, where he convinces the protagonist to give up their money driven ways and even their own life to help this war torn country.

This game made 11 year old me a veteran. After playing it through twice in a row I now have *blank stare*

played this through several times on pc - I disagree that the bus travel is almost useless - I used it constantly. Yes you have certain missions that it's not helpful to use, but most often it'll get you much closer to your objective and without the time-consuming labor of dealing with additional outposts or occupied zones. It's especially useful for assassination and gun shop missions, often putting you very close to the target. I had issues with bugs caused by running on windows 10 but I downloaded a mod by Macrovision with enhanced color that also made the game completely bug free.

I have no idea of FC2 but I played gta san andreas(although the game is iconic & never gets old), but now it feels old and outdated. Even if you play it, you will struggle with controls.

The bugs you mentioned are specifically with the PC port. Enabling V-Sync fixed most of them for me .
