I 100%-ed the game. The nukes weren't Joseph's. They were probably Russian. When you do the quest for Relder to retrieve the lighters from his Vietnam buddies, and assuming you have all regions liberated; when you return the lighters you hear a radio broadcast from the outside of the valley inside his house. Apparently, someone hit Moscow with a terror attack which left millions dead. It's assumed that this is in retaliation.

Yeah I went back and played it again to find things I might have missed. One of the things is that all the killing and torture didn't happen until after you arrived. If you refused to cuff him no one would have been hurt, but you arresting him fulfilled some sort of prophecy he had which caused all the cultists to start raiding homes for supplies to survive the apocalypse.

I'll use in game events as an example: At one of the outposts, you can hear a radio broadcast discussing the breakdown of peace talks in the middle East (presumably negotiations between NATO and Assad, Iran and Russia over Syria), during which an unknown actor attacks both the location of the talks themselves, and Moscow, which is hit with what is presumably a nuclear weapon (The Russian death toll is listed in the millions). Everything from this point forward is pure speculation, but with the Russia leadership fractured, elements of their military command structure, fearing a full US strike (as would be expected under the MAD doctrine, and given the current geopolitical climate), and ordered a full retaliatory strike, likely exhausting their entire arsenal. My evidence for this are the targets themselves: There are three detonations in the final scene within close proximity to Joseph's compound. I believe they were targeting the derelict ICBM silos John, Jacob and Faith had made into their respective bunkers. Why? Much of the US/Russian nuclear arsenal dates back to the mid sixties, and many still retain targeting information from half a century ago. The ONLY reason those silos would be hit is in the event of a full lauch. Think about it. In an absolutely ideal situation, North Korea could hit the mainland US once, maybe twice MAX, though even that is exceptionally unlikely. But assuming they did, do you honestly believe they would attack empty silos in the least populated state in the US? Doubtful. The war in far cry is entirely the result of escalation of tensions between the US and Russia, the only two nations ON EARTH with the capacity to wipe out all life in the northern hemisphere.

2 things to think about 1. The tornado effect started BEFORE he threw the drums of Bliss, though, it still could have been affecting us from a distance. 2. We were fucking shooting our friends and reviving them, I don't think that's how bullets or people work, which means this was either a badly thought out boss fight(despite how fun it was) or a hint that we were only hallucinating. Edit: Also, Joseph calmly carried you through a blazing, nuclear forest while he was shirtless. And Dutch was both expecting people to be there, as well as armed.
