Lovely analysis. It's very dear to my heart as a Jew with heritage from Eastern Europe. This song is a demonstration of the inner turmoil of the Jewish diaspora. It appears to be a simple love triangle between the old and new, and a young girl, but it's a far more sophisticated message really.

What a fantastic analysis of this beautiful song! I love how you went step-by-step explaining how the music so perfectly matches and helps to convey the meaning of the lyrics. Thank you! - Brenda

I enjoy this explanation. I love the oboe, or is it a bassoon, on the verse beginning with, "oh what a melancholy... Your awesome btw.

Yes! Such a great oboe countermelody there, and at the end/after the song as she walks away.

Of course, watching this sort of thing sends my brain off onto weird musical stuff. This time it wandered to Chichester Psalms, Les Miserables, and Oedipus Tex. :-)
