Matthias as Gabriel was the best, most memorable thing about this 2015 version, imo 🥰

I'm more personally drawn to the Boldwood-type. Quiet, reserved

Does anyone else think Sam Claflin would have made a good Troy, or is that just me?

A sack of potatoes could've made a better Troy than Sturridge, but agreed. Claflin would have been perfect for the role :/

oh poo, these are not correctly subtitled for deaf/hard of hearing. The book was better!.Why don't movie theaters pay attention and include #captioning !! #CaptionThis

I found a movie the other day, where a British actor/character says, "Forget it!", and the caption person/machine wrote it as "F### it!", when 'Forget' made more sense for the scene/grammatically. As someone who has a very hard time understanding people when I can't see their faces to read their lips as they speak, I get very annoyed when no one reads the scripts/listens/pays attention to the scene/grammar to figure out the actual words spoken. Or they don't program the computer well enough. PS: You ever try some older black and white films? Any time the actors ad-libbed, those words aren't in the DVD's closed captions. Errol Flynn movies are particularly bad for missing his ad-libs.

Looks dull compared to the original. The original had some wit in it.

Baldwood would have made a great lover for mrss everdeen. To bad her character was just annoying as hell.

Agreed. I'd have chosen him any day - you'd feel so safe and protected around him. The farmer is alright, yet the other dude is just annoying. But hey, that's just me.

priestessmikokikyo77 I was rooting for him at the start but I was very satisfied with the movie's ending. Boldwood's character just wasn't right for Bathsheba in the end, even the fangirl in me can see that.

priestessmikokikyo77 I know, he was the most likable guy in the film and he just kept getting stomped on throughout the film. I felt so bad for him at the end.

+MartialArtsCat101 Same here. I really like Michael Sheen, and I enjoyed his version of Boldwood. However, then I watched other versions of the story and it seems like they definitely toned him down a lot in this version. In other versions and likely in the original book (I haven't read it all the way through yet, so I don't know for sure), Boldwood is very strange. He goes from 0-60 in his love for Bathsheba basically overnight after he gets the valentine. He's always pressuring her to get married, or to see him as a suitable candidate. He's much more violent, passionate, and obsessed. He's very possessive of Bathsheba, and basically just wants to "claim" her as his wife. I honestly don't know if he really sees her for who she is like Gabriel Oak seems to. In the other versions, his violence against Troy is built up and foreshadowed well, so you understand when he shoots Troy at the end of the movie. However, here, it totally blindsided me. I guess it made sense, but this Boldwood seemed like he would've handled the situation slightly differently. So, yeah, ultimately they made this version of Boldwood more likeable and FAR less creepy than I think he was originally meant to be. Not that I mind, as I said, I like Michael Sheen. But, just so everyone's aware, he isn't always as gentlemanly as he appears in this version.

This version downplays Boldwood's obsession with Bathsheba and his jealousy. That's not the kind of man I would want. I like this movie but the condensed running time hurts character development. Read the book or see the two other versions - the 1967 epic starring Julie Christie or the 1998 Masterpiece Theatre miniseries if you want to see more of the story.
