Fareed Haque - Sting

Oh how I remember Fareed Haque and this wonderful performance on Night Music from the late 80's. All the players in this clip are musical geniuses and beautiful souls. Sadly, Hiram and Don are no longer with us. I had the great pleasure of knowing Fareed Haque for a short time. I was an "up and coming" musician/ singer songwriter from an affluent Chicago suburb. A few musicians from Chicago's inner jazz circle graced me with their presence by rehearsing with me for a few recording sessions; The great Mark Walker(drums), who went on to play with Lyle Mays, Oregon and others; Joan Hickey(piano extraordinaire), Brad Wheeler, a great jazz saxophone talent. Having met Fareed at one of his gigs, I nervously asked if he would come some day to my little recording studio, located in the attic of my parents huge mansion, simply to check out what I was doing. He kindly agreed, as he'd heard about the music I was writing. I was flabbergasted that this extraordinary guitarist obliged. I was so pleased and honored that he took a liking to my material. Although we never collaborated musically, I often attended his gigs. Fareed was always kind to me and a gentleman. His talent was undeniable and he went on to contribute great things to the music world as well as becoming a respected teacher. Sadly though, my life took many strange and unfortunate turns. Through devastating times, I could not hold on to my musical passion and dreams... Now I transport you 28 years later to my cold little flat in a small, seedy Polish town near the Czech/ German boarder. As I listen to this clip of Fareed and the boys playing so beautifully, I weep. One cheap little acoustic guitar sits in the corner of my bedroom. I rarely play it. Although I'm grateful to have my daughter and wife, the juxtaposition between the world I once knew and came from, and this, where I am now, is too hard to convey. Oddly, 9 or 10 years ago, I saw a poster pasted on an old dirty hoarding in the centre of this Polish town. "Hiram Bullock" to play in some run down venue here. I was astonished. I bought a ticket and went. He played beautifully, but I couldn't believe how he had changed physically. He was not the same man who was on Night Music. Overweight and bloated with dreadlocks, he played with such passion in this horrible little venue in Poland. I cried. His love for the guitar and his music sustained him. He died a year or so after I saw him play...I am grateful to Fareed Haque and all of these great musicians who have blessed us with their musical spirit.. My cheap acoustic guitar I believe is beckoning me. Perhaps I should pick it up for old time sake...Thank you for your life giving talent.
