I like Fareed, but this commentery shows how out of touch media elites are with the working class. When you look at wage changes relative to housing cost increases ( the avg. person's largest expense) I can't remeber a time where things have gotten so much worse in such a short period of time. Today the car I bought for 35K five years ago now lists for 55K, but wagess haven't went up nearly enough to keep pace. Also, at least in my city crime is much worse. 5 years ago the local Target didn't have half it's products locked behind glass enclosures. The local McDonalds has closed it's dining room and now only offers drive thru due to crime. And let's talk about world peace. Proxy war with Russa, and perhaps the beginning of major war in the middle east. So on three most important facotrs, can I get ahead financially, am I safe in my own neighborhood, and is there threat of major war, things have gotten much worse - at least that's what I see directly, when not fed the media's filtered narrative. And FYI I have a Ph.d. and MBA - so I don't think it's simply about education and social identity.

@TheMusicRoomWAАй бұрын
He's talking about the MAGA-adjacent crowd and that's fine, there is a lot of right-wing cultural stuff going on among working people. That's what happens when Dems don't give people something to believe in. But what is more concrete is finances. Leftist workers and rightist workers can agree on one thing--they need money. The economy will always be a top issue regardless of how loud the anti-immigrant MAGA voices are. It wasn't that long ago that a huge working class movement was calling for single-payer health care, tuition-free college, raising the minimum wage, taxing the rich, even a federal jobs guarantee. That was when Bernie Sanders was running, giving working people something to believe in and fight for. The energy isn't there on the left right now so you won't hear as much about that, whereas the MAGA movement is still going strong mainly because Trump is running for president. Fareed is correct to describe immigration as a hot topic among working class voters but it doesn't necessarily come at the expense of progressive economics. Why do progressive policies poll at like 60, 70, sometimes 80 percent? Because they transcend cultural issues and political issues. In other words, it's because a lot of Republicans support them!

That may be because you know do not what the US economy is and who represents what in the politics and the economy. The economy is the spending of business, government and households. If you do not own a business then you are part of the household. The most important segment of the economy is the households. It is the needs of households that the businesses sector is created for. When business is making record profits that usually means households are not doing that well? Why? The money that business gets comes from households and government. So people looking at the stock market and GDP cheering one business growth are basically cheering on increases in their rent, mortgages and utility bills. Households need income, not expenditures, just the same as business. The politics has two segments: They are pro business politicians that work for the business sector and their is the people friendly politicians that work more for households. So if one does not have a business, who is going to pass the best laws to help them advance and compete. It has never been the pro business politician because they are working to help business increase their profits. That means they pass laws to help business have advantage or workers and make more money. The reason why Republicans and business are against Unions is because unions get more benefits and income for households. So if you do not have business but are voting for pro business politicians and you have family then all you are doing is spitting in the face of your family. They are not aligned to help you.

I work around a diverse group of Men and Woman, and we have discussed many topics affecting voting demographics. I am old enough to remember when candidates used the racial divide to whip the vote. In the last few election cycles that has not worked. The middle-class worker black, Hispanic, Asian or White and any other group sees each other as their equal in a fight for economic success. We are starting to unite together against the Socioeconomic divide. I believe there is a difference in the message relating to who is delivering it. When you use the Hollywood elite and Musicians to promote your message you are losing the middleclass movement. We may not understand or know what Socioeconomics are but we understand sincerity and humility. It is hard to believe anyone not in the middle-class can relate to or understand the fight for the American dream currently experienced by the middle-class. I myself look at the data and my own personal finances and see the difference. I am not better off today then 4 plus years ago financially. Since Americans are congenitally incapable of looking at other countries, they can’t see that many of these things are worse elsewhere. High cost of healthcare? That’s what you get for treating health as a capitalist, unregulated, for-profit enterprise. Inflation? Back down to target levels and according to every economist will be driven up again by Trump’s tariffs plan. Wages are up, actually, but does Biden set your wages? My reaction to Fareed Zakaria attempt to explain major social changes in the US in simple terms of a difference in education struck me as so outdated. It totally overlooks the growth of the college educated working class (the educated underclass). Many (I read one-third of) college graduates from 4-year schools wind up in jobs that do not require a college degree. Employment no longer matches educational expectations, a disappointment that has helped fuel recent social movements such as Occupy Wall Street, Black Lives Matter, and the rise in union organizing. As many union members today hold a 4-year college degree as those with only a high school diploma.

Using the F-word. How original. If Fascism comes to this country, it will be the left delivering it, not the right. The censorship-industrial complex is 100 percent a democrat creation. You have party elders openly calling for the jailing of those who spread "misinformation," which they get to define. That ought to scare the hell out of you, but it doesn't because it's only people who do not believe as you do who are affected. Democrats moved heaven and earth, bending the law into pretzels shapes in the process, to destroy Trump, their chief antagonist, not because they thought he was a threat to democracy, but rather because he was a threat to their stranglehold on power, hence money. Democrats, if you want to see fascists, start with the person in the mirror.

Working class people have health insurance , they know "healthcare for all" means they get less and pay more. If you work hard for what you have , you tend not to want to give to those who don't, it means you get less. Our culture tends to advocate for college, even if its aimless. Colleges started sucking students into these big loans even though their degrees are worth less than real world trade work experience... Yet now its the working class/ taxpayer that needs to bail out the students ? I say pass laws or enforce existing laws against fradulent loans , dont punish the taxpayer. If we really need to help the students this time around we can have thet debate , but its not fair to take money from actual hourly wage earners to pay for the education of salary earners. How does the political left convince themselves that non college educated people want to pay for this? One of the first things a dictator does when they take power in the modern day is outlaw guns . I have my opinion on this issue, but this is just a fact . It upsets me that the left mentions AR bans in their agenda. Sounds like a policy that again is ungrounded in reality and it pushes liberal leaning folks like myself away from the camp . To be clear I want existing gun controls and actual enforcement of the law. Shooting innocents is illegal , lets try to enforce thet law before we come up with more laws that only help criminals rob defenseless people .
