Great book, if you haven’t read it I highly recommend his sixth book, the long goodbye, which many rate as his best. Great characterisation in my opinion and no need to read all the stories leading up to it

I finished Farewell, my Lovely on a flight last week. I was so engrossed in Chandler's language I forgot to have my normal anxiety attack while landing

I read The Big Sleep earlier this month and was really impressed with Chandler's style. I didn't care for how flat the characters seemed and the mystery element of the plot wasn't quite intriguing enough to propel me through the book; I kept reading just for Chandler's talented dialogue and writing style. I plan on reading the other Marlowe books, but feel I have more fulfilling novels on my shelf waiting to be read first.

Don't suppose you're going to wade through 'The Recognitions' by William Gaddis anytime soon? A real tome of a book.

A well-done brief review. This one is not my favorite Chandler, but you can make the case it is most "typical" and shows the author in his full-bloom period. It is also very tight considering its cannibalized origin. Anne Riordan is an odd character, and the reader is made to care for her and hope she might have some "legs" in Marlowe's future. Chandler, however, was correct (in the artistic sense) to discard her because Marlowe can never be constant to one woman and she is not really his type. He was more attracted (and repelled) by the lead femme, the Grayle Frail AKA Velma. Even the woman he appears to end up with at the end of the series is the sister of a serial skank and daughter of a multi-millionaire. Nor is she a loyal straight shooter like Anne. Chandler himself liked complicated women (and susceptible pick ups, it seems). He was devoted to Cissy but cheated on her and was wrecked by her death. But yes, he was one of the great talents of the 20th century.

Best Hammet imo is _The Thin Man._
