Farewell Parliament House - Sunday May 8, 1988

This was shown on ABC TV at 7:30 pm on the evening before New Parliament House opened in Canberra. Sir James Killen wanders through Old Parliament House, as we all can now. He speaks to Gough Whitlam, John Gorton, Fred Daly and others.
Not really "News" as such, but it certainly fits in here. Enjoy.

A marvellous era that valued respect for elders, heritage, intimacy, wit and concise speaking. The 1980s was like the last bastion of the culture of the ‘50s. From the style of dress to the manner of speaking, the ethos evokes a pastoral egalitarianism that has all but disappeared. Insightful questions and candid, often humorous answers, with a cheerful musicality in tone. The last of the bush balladeers. Rest eternally in peace, Sir James.

This should be compulsory viewing for all High School and University students, not only is it part of our great history as a fledgling nation and the events of the 1970.s, it reveals why Sir John Kerr withdrew Whitlam's commission, it reveals the personal relationships between Sir Jim Killen and Fred Daley it demonstrates tolerance and friendships that override differences of opinion

I Remember very well Sir Jim and Fred Daley working their magic with words in the house. In all my years I have never lost admiration for them both, Poles apart in their Politics but remained the best their entire lives. The riff Raff we have sitting in Parliament now could take a lesson

Wow! When i saw the title i thought somehow i had missed a British comedy prob like Yes Prime Minister or something. Boy was i shocked. Id just been binge watching Kenny Everett for two days.
