S-Tier incoming.... may as well be the name of Season 3. There are 5-6 legit bangers in season 3

Employee of the Month, University, Pine Barrens and Amour Fou are definitely 4 of the all-time great episodes of TV. This season excels to an insane degree with standalone episodes.

Old Man Bacala's outlook ties in with what Uncle Junior said about how people dying of cancer are treated. Like a "non-entity." I think Old Man Bacala felt the same way and was happy to be asked to carry out one last hit. He was no longer being treated like a dead man walking, a nothing.

One of the things that makes Tony Soprano a great character is that he is capable of seeing how much of a piece of shit he actually is. Unfortunately, his solution is usually to try assuage his guilt with empty gestures before moving on to the next incident. If he was unable to see his hypocrisy he wouldn't be half as interesting as he is. The scary part is how much he accepts his own bullshit as the series go on. The police officer is an example of three things that Tony can't stand. He is a black man who is an enforcer of the law instead of a criminal, he is a figure of authority, and he is a working man. Tony hates himself, hates the fact that he is a literal embodiment of bad stereotypes of Italians (with the police officer contradicting his own outlook on blacks), he hates people bossing him around, and he hates the fact that unlike his grandfather, he is not a respectable working man, but a criminal. The guy literally just triggers him and when he stops to think about why he starts feeling guilty.

Burt Young great actor!! Good episode. Uncle Jr. Superstitious about the deaths coming in threes. I always wondered how Burt Young produced that cough. So real!! Again, great actor!

This and season 5 are probably my overall favorites. David Chase and the writers were disturbed by how much people were rooting for Tony and his crew by the end of season 2. Season 3 starts the darkening of the tone and testing how far fans will go with Tony and his crew of sociopaths…

Doing a rewatch via Sopranos reactions truly does serve to remind you how outstanding certain relatively slept-on episodes (like this one) are. It really does have everything, like brother Davi sez.

Since someone already quoted the amazing analysis page SopranosAutopsy, I'll pick a small bit from this episode and its relation to the previous one: "In her essay, “Bloodlust for the Common Man,” Jessica Baldanzi looks at how this episode and the previous one work in conjunction with each other: -While “Employee of the Month” whips up viewers’ bloodlust, “Another Toothpick” talks us down and makes us somewhat ashamed of ourselves, of our role in feeding the violence surrounding representations of the mob…The irony is painfully obvious: if a cop like Wilmore who “plays by the rules” had been assigned to Melfi’s case, perhaps the procedures would have been followed more carefully, and Rossi would not have been released on a technicality. The audience is once again chastised: how could you root for a guy like Tony Soprano, someone who pulls the strings to perpetuate the flaws of the legal system-all for the sake of getting out of a speeding ticket? These back-to-back episodes have a brutality about them. A savagely realistic rape was at the heart of “Employee of the Month,” and “Another Toothpick” features some ferocious bloodletting: Mustang Sally cracks Bryan Spatafore’s head open with a golf club, and is then murdered (along with his Puerto Rican friend) in a vicious gun battle. The hitman, Bobby Sr., practically coughs up a lung during his escape before smashing his car into a pole. Even the episode title expresses a kind of brutal callousness towards death: Janice, channeling her mother, refers to cancer-ridden Bobby Sr. (and later, cancer-diagnosed Corrado) as “another toothpick.”

Most of us can't look at Burt Young without seeing Paulie (from the "Rocky" franchise). But he was a fine character actor & could get us past that very quickly. Here, he was simply Bobby's old man & all that it entailed. What a long, respected career he had. I hope Mr. Young is well & happy on the other side.🌿🌿 I'm thoroughly enjoying "Tony Tuesdays" & all that THAT entails. Great analysis & discussions.💫💫 Feel better, Charlie!✨️✨️

21:01 I just realized Jackie sr died of cancer and of course, in this episode old man baccala has lung cancer now uncle Junior has cancer I did some research turns out 50% of men and 33% of woman living in New Jersey can develop cancer in their lifetime that is insane

I don't know, I kinda felt that Officer Wilmore was being an idiot. There's no way he didn't know that was Tony Soprano, and all the cops in NJ would know that Tony would have connections within the police force that could cost them their jobs. Giving Tony a ticket was an extremely stupid way to take a principled stand. "Affirmative action COCKSUCKER"
