What a spectacular accomplishment. She is truly one of a kind, a thoroughbred designed by an apprentice with knowledge of his day, her speed never compromised by beauty, left to rot after collecting yard bills out of reach for the common craftsman. We, are all so very lucky to have been introduced thru Utube and the creator Leo for their dedication to excellence. Her road back to England should be enhanced by Leo's vast local knowledge and one we will not miss.

A lot of yards have no experience working with wood. A yard I worked in had a wood mast removed and was put horizontally on horses with about 5' overhang at the masthead. It was not solid wood, just boxed (hollow inside). We were horrified the next day to see the masthead end had sagged down noticeably maybe 2" as I recall.

It's so interesting to see how much this boat looks "lived in" even compared to the beginning of the summer. There isn't quite that sense of newness any more, is there? The bronze has dulled, the cap rails are graying, everything has settled into its function. Now TALLY HO has entered the steady state phase of maintenance, where some refitting and rethinking will always be in mind, but most of the effort will shift to routine activities. These tend to be less dramatic, less obviously critical, but they still call for the same level of attention. Psychologically, this can be a difficult transition. We get used to the stimulus of new shipments arriving, major work to be planned and executed, seeing everything take shape for the first time. Overhauling and upkeep are not as exciting, not as urgent. I love the contemplative aspect of taking proper care of a boat, but it certainly is a different mindset, and if you're not living aboard it becomes different in yet another way. It's all good when done mindfully.

I have watched many of the videos by Leo Goolden. He has always struck me as a competent and accomplished young man guided by ethical ideals. What surprised me is that I have never discovered his long-term plans for this boat, which he purchased for one dollar and is now worth a small fortune. I suppose he is the legal owner, and he could put the vessel up for sale and pocket the proceeds. I do not think that would happen for one moment. However, he must have some notions of his future and Tally Ho.

@mikesworld602 ай бұрын
Good eye, it is some discoloration in the wood. That part of the boat does not have anything on the wood so it is just natural and will get water stains and such. The yellow hose is actually the shore power cable.

Beautiful boat but who wants to sail a gaff rigged boat?
@kenbeiser44432 ай бұрын
Gaff rigs have many advantages over a masthead or fractional rig. Low center of effort, more sail area where you want it in light air, ability to add a topsail up where it also helps, and more.
@DouglasArringtonMusic2 ай бұрын
@@kenbeiser4443 Those advantages are actually no that at all. Look at how many lines subject to chaff and fouling, a long heavy boom that can dip into the water on a following sea with cross waves, cannot be single handled and likely will need more than 2 for long passages, huge effort to raise and lower sails especially on this boat with no power winches, a antique heavy and waste of money and effort in the windlass, exposed steering position leading to fatigue, a small and easily broken auto pilot, the likely need to go aloft in a blow to free tangles lines and sails, the real possibility of getting caught with too much sails in a sudden blow, etc etc. Old things are quaint and nice to look at but their practicality when compared to modern rigs is very poor. Also below decks in a severe storm will lead to a boat full of vomit as the design will roll and heal greatly. This boat has never been in a real blow or sudden changes in the sea state nor has it been without a large crew. It is indeed a work of art with a fine skipper, but it will be super uncomfortable and dangerous on any long voyage. And what of warmer seas with worms on a wooden boat? Certainly areas of the south pacific would be off limits.
@davidnichols1472 ай бұрын
I grew up on a gaff schooner which our Uncle John built in Dover, NH on the Lamprey River under the guidance of Ted MacIntosh. At 74, although still in the game, wouldn't change the knowledge accumulated nor believe I'd enjoy the fast pace of the IMOCA fleet?
@DouglasArringtonMusic2 ай бұрын
@@davidnichols147 I am sure your sailing experiences were wonderful and you enjoyed it. So perhaps this would be a perfect boat for you. However if you want to sail the world, as the owner has stated, this would be the worst choice to do so. Having a seaworthy vessel that can sail rapidly with few crew which can outmaneuver storms at sea, is a distinct advantage when contemplating long voyages, not like sailing on a river in a day sail. I get it that some folks love traditional things, yet there is a reason we invented better machines in our evolution. This is not an efficient design and if it was they would be mass produced. It is a relic of a bygone area and is suitable as such for day sailing and shorts trips. Yes, you could take this across the Atlantic, but not without a crew and and a whole lot of effort. At my age or even when I was sailing at 14, I would not choose this design, nor would the market. People looking to buy a boat and explore would be foolish to select this type of vessel in my view. There are reasons why we do not make airplanes out of wood anymore. The same logic applies here.

How do we know this boat is a “she”???
@mikesworld602 ай бұрын
The tradition of boats being referred to as “she” has endured for centuries, reflecting a deep-rooted connection between sailors, their vessels, and the sea. It encompasses as the language evolves, ship names, emotional bonds, the power of Mother Nature, and maritime customs. By personifying boats as female, sailors pay homage to the strength, grace, and protection associated with these mighty vessels. So, when you hear someone calling a boat “she,” it signifies a rich maritime tradition connecting sailors to the vastness of the sea and the captivating essence of femininity.
@johnkelly69422 ай бұрын
@ very well said, my comment also applies to people who refer to their cars/motorcycles in the feminine gender. No. It’s not a person, it’s a machine.
