The shaft on mine came out by itself, not the rest. I can not figure out how to get the rubber seal and the gold color piece under it. It’s pretty stuck. I’m afraid to scratch the inside of the pan trying it. I was hoping your video would show that and how to put everything back. Bummer.
@mikesworld602 күн бұрын
The gold-colored part is the oil light bearing that is press fit into the pan and should not be removed. It is not a part you want to remove. At the end are pictures of the instructions that come with the kit. They show all the parts and what order they go into the pan. The shaft can only be driven into the pan from the bottom because there is a snap ring under the seal inside the pan. If your shaft came out the bottom, then the snap ring would have to be missing under the seal. If you drive the shaft into the pan the snap ring should push the seal out. If the shaft is out and the seal is still in there take a small flat blade screwdriver and pry the seal out using the center hole in the seal. Watch the whole video all the way through if you skipped though it the first time. I just watch the video again and it should have everything in it to make the replacement a success. I was not able to show putting the seal back in because the camera failed to record that, but it is just the reverse of taking it apart. the seal is just press fit into the pan and if you can't get it all the way in, you can use a small diameter wood down and press on the outer edge of the seal.
@josephsfields5 күн бұрын
Not gonna lie, this video was a total waste of my time for what I thought it would show. Getting the bearing out and back in, is pretty damn important to the repair. Consider shooting the video again. Now I'm off to look for that in a video.
@mikesworld605 күн бұрын
I'm sorry you didn't find it helpful, the bearing replacement wasn't the focus of this one, but I can see how it would be important to some.
@josephsfields5 күн бұрын
@@Nick-v7f5x I stand corrected, the video doesn't show the removal or reinstallation of the bearing or the seal. The typical complaint people that own these machines have is that the liquids are leaking out of the bottom of the bread pan. This happens either after the seals wear out or the customer took it apart to clean and can't get it back together properly.
@josephsfields5 күн бұрын
@@mikesworld60 Would you say the rubber seal just slips on over the shaft and can be push all the way down to it's seated position using only the fingers or is it much more of a task to get it down where it needs to be? Ever replaced a crankshaft seal? They don't just slide into place. So I figure there might be more to it.
@mikesworld602 күн бұрын
@@josephsfields The seal is a light press fit into the pan after the shaft is installed, I used a small diameter wooden dowel to press it in on the outer edge of the seal.

A lot of yards have no experience working with wood. A yard I worked in had a wood mast removed and was put horizontally on horses with about 5' overhang at the masthead. It was not solid wood, just boxed (hollow inside). We were horrified the next day to see the masthead end had sagged down noticeably maybe 2" as I recall.

Yep, Mike, good summary. I followed this project from the very beginning being totally fascinated by the skills and accuracy of the craftsmen. I wished I could work same way. And a bit funny to say but I had some teardrops in my eyes when she sailed for the first time. So wonderful to see this old design sailing. It feels as if old times are coming back. Only sailors can understand this feeling. Stay tuned, Peter.

The hardwire adapter is worth it and makes way more sense than having the romex run direct to the machine. It is far easier to unplug if you have to pull the washer out vs. having to struggle with detaching the wires on the machine, as many models have the junction box under the unit (hard to access). You could have just used a surface mount junction box and duplex receptacle for the same cost, skipping the extra/optional cord you got. I personally removed my hardwire and put in a duplex wall receptacle so I could use the standard 5-15P cord most machines come with. BTW... many local codes no longer permit romex runs out a wall to machines (dishwashers, garbage disposals, etc.) and you have to have a junction box like you got or a standard wall receptacle. Solid wiring does not stand up well to repeated flexing.

One of the surprises, for me, in this vast project, is how the finished TALLY HO still resonates with age and experience, as if she had been kept in this state of readiness for all of the past century. Having followed the project, I know in some detail how much of the boat is new timber, and how many new systems went in, and yet the impression of age or perhaps timelessness remains extremely strong. This is a testament to Leo's dedication and thoughtfulness at every point from the keel up. I think it was the local Port Townsend newspaper which carried a fairly thorough article on TALLY HO a couple of months ago. But I take exception to one detail, in which the article called the project a "replica." That's simply not the case, and it fails to capture both the philosophy and methods of this project. TALLY HO was rebuilt in place, piece by piece, studied and measured and fitted in place. This is a restoration, albeit a very substantial one, and we can sense the difference in the completed project. Sure, there are shiny new bronze floors and knees, and much that is new. But TALLY HO is not a shiny new vessel, a replica vessel. That would have been easy. Leo took the road less travelled, and we can feel the difference.

So what happens when you put the pot together and you have a leak at any section of the pipe because we have a leak at our elbow and we’ve tried twisting it and whatever and we can’t get it to stop leaking smoke
@mikesworld6011 күн бұрын
If you have smoke coming out the joints between the pipe and stove it would seem to me, you don't have a good draft. The top pipes always go on the inside of pipe below it. This way if you get creosote running down the pipe it won't come out the joints but just run into the stove. So, you would think the smoke coming from the stove going up would come out the joints into the building. But if you have a good draft on the pipe clear to where it exits the building you should not have a problem. If your pipe comes off the stove and then goes through the wall and up a pipe on the outside, it should still be ok as long as you get a good draft on the pipe. I think you need to have the pipe outside the building above the roof to get a good draft. If it comes out the roof it needs to be at least 10' from the peak otherwise it needs to extend above the peak 3 or 4 feet. Make sure you pipe is wide open between the stove and where it exits at the top of the pipe outside. If you have an elbow to go 90 deg out the side of the building maybe it is blocked so the smoke comes out the joint inside the building.
@mikesworld6011 күн бұрын
My last post is regarding and standard wood stove. If you have a pellet stove with a vent fan and double wall twist connections on the pipe you would have to use a small amount of high temp silicon to seal each joint.

I have watched many of the videos by Leo Goolden. He has always struck me as a competent and accomplished young man guided by ethical ideals. What surprised me is that I have never discovered his long-term plans for this boat, which he purchased for one dollar and is now worth a small fortune. I suppose he is the legal owner, and he could put the vessel up for sale and pocket the proceeds. I do not think that would happen for one moment. However, he must have some notions of his future and Tally Ho.

Good eye, it is some discoloration in the wood. That part of the boat does not have anything on the wood so it is just natural and will get water stains and such. The yellow hose is actually the shore power cable.

How do we know this boat is a “she”???
@mikesworld6017 күн бұрын
The tradition of boats being referred to as “she” has endured for centuries, reflecting a deep-rooted connection between sailors, their vessels, and the sea. It encompasses as the language evolves, ship names, emotional bonds, the power of Mother Nature, and maritime customs. By personifying boats as female, sailors pay homage to the strength, grace, and protection associated with these mighty vessels. So, when you hear someone calling a boat “she,” it signifies a rich maritime tradition connecting sailors to the vastness of the sea and the captivating essence of femininity.
@johnkelly694217 күн бұрын
@ very well said, my comment also applies to people who refer to their cars/motorcycles in the feminine gender. No. It’s not a person, it’s a machine.
