I've always loved Judy Collins...Send in the Clowns was my favorite...until I heard this song on the radio one day while I was repairing my car...I stopped...dropped everything...and was captivated by the sound...the whales, and her angelic voice...without instruments...it was beautiful...

I dated a dolphin trainer back in the 80s, who took me for a late night swim with the captive dolphin, Dixie. The acoustics of the abysmal tank room were perfect for singing this song. Dixie stayed still, hanging in the water and listening intently to me sing. A sad, sweet memory every time I hear this.

How's this for irony? I had lived in Nova Scotia for a bit in the early 70's. It was a magical place...and when I was in the Navy, just prior, that had been one of my absolute favorite tunes! The memories just flooded my senses... Lovely photos and an excellent choice for accompaniment! Her beautiful voice, the whalesong and great scenery. Wow! Thank you for sharing!!!

This song proves that Judy Collins had the purest voice of all time. I didn’t always like the way she used it such as her choices to relocate the phrasing in many places in Someday soon, but her tonal quality is simply superb. Suzy Boggus best her hands down with her version of Someday soon, but for pure elegant beauty o tone, no one can even come close. And the way she was able to blend her voice with those of the whales is purely angelic!

May the day come when this song be sung for historical reasons only and the slaughter of these amazing animals end before it is too late ....... Play "Farewell To Tarwath…" Farewell to Tarwathie, Adieu Mormond Hill And the dear land of Crimmond, I bid you farewell I'm bound off for Greenland and ready to sail In hopes to find riches, in hunting the whale Farewell to my comrades for a while we must part And likewise the dear lass, who first won my heart The cold coast of Greenland, my love will not chill And the longer my absence more loving she'll feel Our ship is well rigged and she's ready to sail The crew they are anxious to follow the whale Where the icebergs do float and the stormy winds blow Where the land and the ocean is covered with snow The cold coast of Greenland is barren and bare No seed time nor harvest is ever known there And the birds here sing sweetly, in mountain and dale But there's no bird in Greenland to sing to the whale There is no habitation for a man to live there And the king of that country is the fierce Greenland bear And there'll be no temptation to tarry long there With our ship bumper full we will homeward repair Farewell to Tarwathie, Adieu Mormond Hill And the dear land of Crimmond, I bid you farewell I'm bound off for Greenland and ready to sail In hopes to find riches, in hunting the whale

This is a bothy balad from the North East of Scotland in the Doric dialect. Tarwathie is a farm near Mintlaw in Aberdeenshire and the singer is looking to leave Peterhead, a major nearby whaling port in the 19th Century to go "Chasin' the Whal" off Greenland instead of working as a farm labourer on what was not the best or productive farmland. Frying pan into the fire!?

Tarwathie is in Scotland. the images are in Nova Scotia, or New Scotland. Taken on my last night there, I chose the song partly because the writer is both sad to leave and eager for new adventure.

I served at BMEWS site I complex Thule Greenland in 1972-73 (Ballistic Missile Early Warning System). And on a DEW (Distant Early Warning) site in the middle of the Greenland Icecap (DYE2). And this song captures the loneliness of life in the Arctic very well. Before you liberal haters reply I did it so you can walk around spewing your hate and stupidity in safety!
@StanFrantz7 жыл бұрын
Thank you for your insightful and thoughtful comment and thank your for your service to this country I love. -a Liberal Now as to your final sentence, as a liberal, I am moved to try to understand why in the world you would think your completely apolitical statement would draw out the 'liberal haters.' As a liberal, I am moved to try and understand where such apparent anger and defensiveness comes from and try to help. As a liberal, I hate hate, so do my utmost not to hate anyone myself. On the contrary I do my utmost to have empathy and understanding. So I am further moved to ask questions like: what exactly do you think a liberal is? what do you think they believe in? what do you think hate itself is? why do you think they will spew hate at you for this comment? As an artist who created this video to share the emotions I felt on experiencing the beauty and splendor of this place and the sorrow I felt on leaving it and then to see you understand and relate to that eloquently, but still be so filled with apparent 'hate' yourself at these 'liberal haters' that you expect them to savage you for some unknown reason, I am simply gobsmacked, but still want to understand where this reaction could possibly come from.
