Not really so, friend; some of us STILL sing 'em... if it's about the song and not about the money. There are songs lifting up ideas; songs against war; songs about friendship; songs about romance; ballards; songs of praise to God; songs of sadness and brokenness. What makes them alive is the living heart and mind of the singer. If you're truly involved in your song; if you really MEAN what you're singing and do it with a whole heart... even if it's with a frail and croaking voice, THAT'S what makes it alive, and draws others WITH you, into your song. I'm pushing 76, but I'm not through yet. Happy Valentine's ❤!

I think Judy's eyes were very sensitive to light; blue eyes , and she avoided the "limelight"...I , myself couldn't perform with all those lights glaring at me, and I moreover enjoyed talking to the crowd more than singing... so I had to sit in the dark and glance at the music lighted stand instead! The lack of "strong drugs" might have helped too! She and Joan Baez are both still going strong! FORGET the guitar! Judy Collins could sing acapella and keep the crowd amazed! Besides, it's the CAPO she's using that causes the strings to loosen , requiring adjustments. The time that talent becomes how loudly one can scream into a microphone while disrobing for views, will soon dissipate, and quality will survive . Judy could have used her voice range to become a famous opera singer-but she kept to her standards. Love to hear her " Amazing Graze" over and over. "Why War?" Do you remember Arlo Guthrie's Alice's Restaurant ? Love the City of New Orleans also. Like your opinion on " A Wretch Like me" Arlo Guthrie style, sometime. Wait 'til the grid goes and people have to communicate more "personably" again? Us old hippies and the Amish will have it altogether! IF people could "slow their pressured lives down" and actually "listen" again, without having to be BLASTED by electronics? The lack of "strong drugs" might have helped too! I’m fortunate to have lived in a season when these singers, and others like them, represented the times. I’m hopeful that the lyrics and melody of this song are fulfilled and that there is a turn for the better, whatever that may be.

She was one of the most significant singers of the sixties. I'm 73 and I was in love with her for a decade or more and she is still always in my heart. I saw her live in Cleveland Ohio in 67 or 68. I went with a lovely Lake Erie College girl whose name I regret I do not remember. A wonderful time of life.

This is from Pete Seeger's show on PBS which was broadcast in the late 60s called Rainbow Quest. he had quite a few contemporary singers Judy Collins, Arlo Guthrie, Donovan,et. He also he also did film clips of Leadbelly and Woody Guthrie. Great show. Watched it every week.

@@eugenedegeorge5084 I did a little research. The 39 episodes of Rainbow Quest were recorded in 1965 and the show debuted that year. The show was rebroadcast in 1967-68, likely when you saw it. I’m curious as to where this Judy Collins broadcast falls in relation to the Byrds’ “Turn, Turn, Turn,” which debuted in October of 1965 and was #1 by December. Obviously, they were very close in time. Judy appeared in episode #32. Pete does reference “other people singing my songs” at the end.

She's a Force of Nature; an unkind description would be to say her voice is a mutation, a freakish variation from the usual, normal voice. I think she's just an uncommonly clear and beautiful combination of vocal mechanism and training(singing practice) - like Eva Cassidy or Sarah MacLaughlin, and she just sounds unusually pleasing to everybody's ear. It makes NO sense to try to explain it - just enjoy her while you can. This video is important; it's a video recording from a small local Television station in NYC in 1966, while Pete was still Blacklisted by those assholes in the US Congress(HUAAC) for refusing to answer their silly questions about his membership in the Communist party. For Judy to perform with him was an act of defiance on her part. She later had some huge Pop hit records, and was Stephen Stills girlfriend for a while; she was the inspiration for "Suite: Judy Blue Eyes," a huge hit for Crosby, Stills and Nash in 1969. Pete was a towering figure in American Music, from his membership in the Weavers in WW2, and his Activism. He also wrote many songs famous with Folksingers and activists; Judy is clearly being very respectful, here. He also wrote one of the first guitar instruction methods, which featured a book and an LP vinyl record to demonstrate how it should sound; David Gilmour of Pink Floyd has said that he got some of his earliest instruction from it. Hundreds of Legendary musicians venerate this man.

Not many "composers" are able to actually converge with, those who express their originals the "way they were planned." Pete Seeger DID.
