Most of the middle part of the United States is a land of extremes. Temperate is simply non-existent here. In the winter it is consistently freezing cold, ungodly windy, with snowfall or ice in measurable quantities near daily. Then in the summer it often becomes so hot and humid that many people find trouble breathing. At least in my region we regularly see 85 degree days with humidity totals in the same region, and it rains in the summer basically as much as it snows in the winter which is to say a lot. In the Great Lakes region where I am from, most of the cities were rebuilt in reclaimed swampland, so you can imagine just how oppressive the heat, humidity, bugs, and thunderstorms are. If you plan to visit, the weather is usually best towards the end of summer.

Wow. So someone comes up to greet you and be civil and then you tell them they "really aren't nice." Wow. That is beyond rude. Where the h*** are you from? Is everyone so off-putting where you're from? When I camp at a campground I make it a point to take a walk and stop and say "hi" to strangers. It's part of travelling and usually very pleasant. Maybe these midwesterners just haven't got into the habit of being scared of their neighbors. Btw, if someone just out of the blue (that I was being pleasant with) said I wasn't nice after a few minute contact, I'm pretty sure I would have just pretended to agree and walked away. Maybe you should remote camp and stay away from people. Also, flyfishing very much screams SNOB to someone who fishes to eat. It's all fun and cute, but it's not how a man efficiently gets groceries.

I lived near Mankato, MN., in a small town called New Ulm, from 1993-2004. I can assure you that “Minnesota Nice” is a phrase that was created as a marketing strategy to promote tourism and to attract new residents. They may be polite and appear to be somewhat naive due to their good natured demeanor, but Minnesotans will bury you and your children in the back forty acres if sufficiently provoked. True story. (Edit: what I mean by this is that folks are steadfast in their beliefs and that they will fight to protect their family, property and their way of life. I don’t mean that they will literally commit murder. My language can tend towards the dramatic sometimes. 🙄)

@@dannibble thanks for your sharing your reply. My comment about the back forty acres was an attempt at slightly macabre humor, but upon reading it I suppose it sounds creepy. @@Coleskatemane the truth be told, I did live near a woman who once told me a story about someone she knew speaking rather tersely and with a certain tone to someone else about something of scant consequence. Furthermore, any application of quasi logical, passive aggressive reasoning could find that the outcome of this anecdotal exchange, however scurrilous and bold, should be extrapolated to infer that this may possibly be typical of the entire indigenous population of the state, as well as any interstate/international transplants. Allegedly. I could be mistaken… So I’m figuring that forty minutes west of New Ulm would have you located somewhere near Sanborn, if memory serves. My wife taught English at St. Mary’s Catholic High School in Sleepy Eye from 1993-2004. I played drums in a few different local bands so I got around to many of the nearby towns in that area. A few that come to mind are Sleepy Eye, Comfrey, Morton, Hanska, Sanborn, Willmar,and Bingham Lake. I’m sure there are more, lol. What a trip down memory lane. Good memories, I must say. Also, I apologize for typing a novel here. I’ve always had a way of being rather wordy. I was married to an English teacher, so there’s that….😁

I would say you've led a sheltered life. Politeness where I grew up in the Midwest (Iowa and Missouri) is a sign of civility...a recognition of behaviors needed to live in a society.
@JD-tn5lz
@JD-tn5lz 8 ай бұрын
No, polite societies are NOT the most repressed and most violent. Politeness in the Upper Midwest is the outward display of civility and respect for others. No, they aren't violent societies. Go to St. Louis. Go to New Orleans. Go to Chicago. Go to DC or Baltimore. You'll find rude all day long, virtually zero politeness, and the most violent cities in America. And no, even though it's in a midwestern state, no one considers Chicago part if the midwest. Btw, the "go Bears" in the clip wasn't about the NFL team, it was about her high school team.

As a Canadian, I always felt like Minnesotans were the most similar to us. Maybe it’s the remotness and the northern life that makes us this way. Geography and culture are often link.

There's a few Minnesotans and Canadian's that get together every year in attempts to try to move the border line, but it always gets intercepted by Mounties and Cops. Playing an album of Rush usually makes everybody settle the eff down.

I worked at my local county’s public works for the summer as a temp and just got off. Yes, there absolutely are people that still talk like that but it’s mostly small town people that live small town lives. It’s still around but Minnesota is getting more and more homogenized with the rest of current American culture
