@Bill Parrish it's called a fictional tv show. usually people do something called the willing suspension of disbelief.
@nickwilliams83024 жыл бұрын
@Bill Parrish Yet questioned it with reference to some alleged superpower Malvo apparently possesses. "Yeah, I know it seems like someone would have to have super-persuasion powers to make this work, but you _could_ also do it if you were a mind reader." Better explanation. Malvo doesn't really care. Malvo would rather not kill the cop than kill him - if only for the possible difficulty it might cause - so if the cop takes the warning and walks away, fine. If Malvo has to kill him, almost as fine. It's an illustration of just how little Malvo cares about whether or not the cop survives meeting him: not even enough to try to bullshit the cop. It's just, "Look. How about you just go away?" One assumes there's a trail of cops who _didn't_ make the smart choice stretching out behind Malvo for quite some distance.
@Th3M4k40n4 жыл бұрын
C'mon guys it's really simple. Malvo tried his scare tactic because it's easier than getting out of the car etc, though if he /had/ to get out of the car then he'd kill the guy and then drive away. It simply saves him some time and he gets to freak people out like he loves. There's no magic belonging here lol.

the end where Gus just simply looks at Lorne in complete confusion and awe like a child and is only able to mutter "sir?" reminds me so much of the scene with Anton and the shop keeper in no country for old men, the shop keeper at one point has the literal exact same facial expression as Gus with the same line he just softly says "sir?" after Anton another grown man asked him what time he went to bed at. The realization the person you're talking to is genuinely evil or has serious malicious intent that they thought they would never have to deal with in their normal mundane lives.

Malvo was a predator. He could spot other predators easily. He knew Grimly wasn’t one of them. Grimly himself said he never planned on becoming a cop. Malvo knew if he wanted to end Grimly he easily could’ve. But he knew he didn’t need his weapons when his words and his look would be sufficient to scare a man who’d probably dealt exclusively with broken taillights and noise complaints his entire career. Grimly knew when the conversation started that he was out of his depth.

Billy Bob is great here yes. But let's not discount the contribution that Colin Hanks (Gus) has here. His ability to play off Billy Bob's energy here is not easy to do. Many actors would try to shine too hard: "Look how scare I'm supposed to be." Not Colin. His fear is apparent but doesn't overshadow his conflict and inner turmoil. I promise you this scene looks much different otherwise. Fantastic support. One of the best scenes in TV.

Some people, who are definitely more observant than many others wrote jokingly that they supposedly tried the same thing on some road with a police officer, and then they had some issues with their (broken, as I think) bones. That was exactly the point. The scene is the explanation that the person in the car is definitely evil and for some reason, he decided not to kill an officer. That's the point, the evil man didn't want to kill a young man, a teenager in his eyes. This is how we know that the person in the car is not devoid of mercy.

@corneliussnow34914 жыл бұрын
This DOES NOT WORK, on most cops. It takes a very special kind of night and a special kind of cop for this to work on. Which is what makes this scene so incredible! Is because Lorn read him like a book before they even talked. Normally, he would have killed the cop. Just like the killer in the movie, fargo. But Lorne saw his weakness, as well as his value for his family. He knew, this cop has too much to loose. I don't need to kill him. I just need to warn him. About who he's dealing with, and that this is not the man to cross. Some roads, you DON'T go down. I've learned this lesson the hard way.
@moonbalancedd2 жыл бұрын
people saying it wouldn't work if they tried it. It's about congruence. There are non-verbal cues that are most important in his line. When a true killer who really means 'there be dragons here' says it, we pick up all the non-verbal vibe from him and the threat is real. When you who has never been in a fight or swatted anything more than a fly, say it, we don't get those non-verbal cues from you and the whole thing is not congruent, sounds weak and falls apart. He's an actor who knows what to mimic and there are probably several takes so it works here.
