Billy Bob had a blast doing this, he said in an interview. He had only done films before. He enjoyed the extensive airtime, compared to movies, to create the character. And he even got to play three characters: Lorne, the minister and the dentist. He loved it.

Lester was on thin ice the whole series, so it was fitting the thin ice finally broke.

The animal theme is interesting. Lorne Malvo roughly translates to malevolent fox, which fits, he is a trickster (often a fox represents a trickster) with malevolent intent... It's interesting that you see a wolf around Malvo (in the distance, on a screen while buying stuff from the guy in the van, outside his cabin), giving the impression it represents him, but as the season continues the wolf gets closer and closer, it isn't until gus shows up to kill Lorne that the wolf is right outside the window... I always imaging Gus was the actual wolf, he belongs to a pack and does whatever is needed to protect it.

The way I view the glove story is that it’s better that someone else have a pair of gloves than two people have one glove; and that Lester doesn’t understand the point. Compare that with the fox the rabbit and the cabbage puzzle which Lester does understand quite easily in fact; it shows that Lester doesn’t care how his actions affect other people, as long as he gets what he wants

I have to mention an analysis of this show that ive seen and it has to do with all the animal references. There is a japanese story which I cant recollect the name of, of a koi going up a waterfall and then reaches it and turns into a dragon. Malvo may be the personification of that given the many references he gives to dragons in the show. Lester is the koi fish that tried but failed to get up the stream and go against the grain. You see a reference to it in the first episode with the poster of that one fish swimming against the stream with the others. That represents lester trying to change his trajectory on life and become the dragon persay being stronger which is what lorne tells him. though he doesnt end up doing it and simply falls back into the water with the other fish at the end. Lorne was a psychopath but he essentially walked free everywhere without care for consequence which is what lester wanted in a sense

There are many nods to the Coen brothers films if you rewatch. In this episode you see Lester looking through the bullet holes in the bathroom door wondering about Lorne on the other side -that is a nod to the end of Blood Simple where Francis Macdormands character sees the light through the bullets holes in the wall made from the antagonist she pinned to the windowsill with a knife. Or you see a sign in the diner that has a special for White Russians which is from the big Lebowski who drinks those throughout the film. Season two has a ton of cool things taken straight from their movies, much more on the.m nose then this season. And yes, you were right about the danger sign. The point is lesters demise was that he has been on thin ice the whole time and he finally fell through. Love your reaction can’t wait for season 2.

Great react as always, guys! One thing I’ve always thought is Bill’s speech about “looking over his shoulder” and all is similar to TLJ’s feeling in No Country for Old Men; both men realize they are Ill-equipped to deal with people like Chigurh & Malvo (both men are sherrif/chief of a small town where they’ve lived all their lives, although in TLJ’s case it’s not so much that he’s not good at his job, which he is, but that age and his doubts are what trouble him, whereas Bill really isn’t cut out for the job). Also pretty fitting that Malvo was taken out by two men he bullied in the pilot episode (Lesnar and Gus).

I love that Malvo is taken down by Lester and Gus(his former prey) like a wolf being killed by rabbits. After watching him get away with his machinations all season I wouldn’t have been surprised if in the final episode it revealed he was an ancient Eldridge god of chaos; but no, he wasn’t a wolf or an ape he was just some guy who liked messing with people and was intelligent enough to get away with it for awhile

He wasn't going to let him live. And Malvo under estimated how much Lester had changed. Part of this story was about adapting to change and growth, Malvo really didn't change.

Also the intriguing riddle of Malvo was about the predatory nature of humans. The wolves were a kind of visual representation of what Malvo was. From Google : When he quizzed then-policeman Gus Grimly, “Why can the human eye see more shades of green than any other color?” he was making a biological point: that humans are predators, evolved for a certain kind of behavior, and ignoring this fact is foolish for anyone, especially a cop, to ignore.

Fun thing about the Shades of green riddle, Molly is technically wrong. The point of the riddle is depending on your worldview, you either believe we see green to avoid predators… or to find prey. Gus says he understands and then follows up by shooting Malvo. Obviously he knew Malvo was a predator this whole time but he decides to confront him when he’s weak, defenseless, and thus prey. So the answer can’t be to see predators, it’s to see prey according to the series. It’s a cynical perspective and one that Molly can’t grasp, but the other characters can. It doesn’t make her dumb it makes her heroic how hopeful she is, and her optimism isn’t necessarily naïveté as long as she keeps her wits about her.

i think it made sense that Gus was the one who took out Lorne. He knew more than anyone else just how dangerous Lorne was and that he had to kill him. If it was someone else, like Molly, she might have just tried to arrest him, not kill him. Which would've been a huge mistake.
@donkeylipsgelfin6983

I always thought it was interesting how the last thing Gus says to Lorne is about how he figured out the green eye riddle, because Molly answered that way back in the episode that it came up. Humans can see more green because they had to be able to identify predators. If that's the answer Lorne had in mind then Gus didn't "figure it out". But maybe Molly's answer is just one way to look at it. Maybe the opposite is also true, that they needed to be able to see prey. Meaning Lorne's point is that humans are predators and that's how he justifies being who he is. And Gus figured it out by channeling his inner predator to stalk and kill him.

I m very interested in the psychology of the 2 main characters Malvo and Lester and how they mirror the characters in Breaking Bad. Lorne Malvo is highly psychopathic but his psychopathy level is stable and he has a set of morals that he lives by despite his high psychopathic tendencies much like Gus Fring in Breaking bad and Lester Nygaard who at first doesn't look like he has psychopathic tendencies but due to circumstances he encountered grows to be more and more psychopathic. Like Walter White, Lester does not have a set of morals he lives by and will do anything to survive . Ultimately like Walter White, Lester Nygaard in my opinion is the more dangerous psychopath who disguises his evil much more deviously.

I highly recommend you watch the Cohen Brothers film Millers Crossing before Season 2. Each Fargo season references various Cohen Brothers films. Season 2 is filled with nods to Millers Crossing even recreating a variation on Millers Crossing's most Iconic scene. It is also filled with visual and thematic references to No Country for Old Men, and a great call back to Raising Arizona.

I remember when this first came out that a lot of people where bent out of shape because Molly didn't get to take Malvo down, but it had to be this way. Molly is a pure soul, she could never execute someone in cold blood. Malvo is an almost Satanic agent of chaos that the legal system cannot handle. It needed to be either Gus or her father, and Gus was the better dramatic choice because you wouldn't think he had it in him, and you know her father could do it without hesitation.

I usually watch most of the full reactions for movies you guys do, but this is the first series I've watched in full along with ya. What. A. Show! Everyone was phenomenal in their roles. But this is the first time for me seeing Martin Freeman in a role like this as Lester Nygaard. Reminds me of experiencing Norman Bates in 'Psycho' or Patrick Bateman in 'American Psycho'. Heinous protagonists, yet you can't help but somewhat "root" for them as you're inevitably along in the ride with them. Freeman was exceptional as the shit-eating, wife murdering, weasel. What a terrific actor. Goes from every-man Tim in the original UK 'The Office', to Bilbo Baggins, and being a likeable guy in the MCU. Whenever you guys decide to do more seasons of this show, I'm hooked.
