Fargo is an anthology series created by Noah Hawley, exploring a disparate collection of characters who deal with a plethora of crimes in different time periods, the only thing in common being their connection to the Midwest USA.
The fourth season of Fargo, created by Noah Hawley, is set in Kansas City, Missouri from November 1950 to early 1951. The season follows two crime syndicates as they vie for control of the underground. The cast is led by Chris Rock, who plays Loy Cannon, the head of a crime syndicate made up of black migrants fleeing the Jim Crow South who have a contentious relationship with the Italian Kansas City mafia. Other cast members include Jessie Buckley, Jason Schwartzman, Ben Whishaw, and Jack Huston.

I'll never understand the hatred season four gets; I loved it back when it first aired, and I love it now. Sure, it's different from the others and it's _very_ ambitious, but I love the fact that they took a risk and actually experimented with what the show can be. If season four had essentially been another 'good cop vs. evil force with hapless civilians caught in the middle' story set in Minnesota rather than an epic 1950s mob war in Kansas City, people would've just complained that the show was "spinning its wheels" and doing "more of the same", which were complaints I saw quite often back when season three was still airing (though now season three seems to be just as beloved as the first two seasons, and rightfully so). People bitch when things don't change enough, then they bitch that things have been changed too much. And I personally thought Chris Rock did a fantastic job; the key to enjoying his performance is knowing that his character isn't supposed to be some big, tough, "badass" gangster, but rather a businessman originally from NY who desperately wants to be legit, yet has no other choice than to get down in the gutter with the Italians due to KC's segregation laws at the time. Season one is great, season two is great, season three is great, season four is great, and so far, season five has been great. There truly is nothing else quite like Fargo.

The criticism of Chris Rock is so out of left field. I, and plenty of other people, think he did an amazing job with this role. I think the issue is when people associate an actor with specific roles. I understand Rock is typically a comedian and takes up comedic roles, but that absolutely does not mean he can't play a serious character. This also applies to actors like Robin Williams, or Jim Carrey. Both have quite a few serious roles under their belt despite being typical comedy actors, and they do great in those movies. You just aren't used to hearing and seeing Chris Rock as something other than an animated zebra.

I just finished season 4 as well. I really liked it! I thought the dialogue was great and the dark humor was definitely there. I do agree the ending could have been a little better and the origin story could have been a bit more extensive. But let’s not think it’s not there - he was a witness to so much gangster trauma and watched his dad die, it makes sense in that scene alone. When he watched the Irishman kill the Italian who was about to shoot him and said “this is what men do” that definitely shaped his young impressionable mind to become what we see in season 2. Change of gears, the actor who plays the brother from Italy is a main character in the show Gomorrah, which you definitely, absolutely need to watch/review next! You’re going to love it and I need to see your reviews on it! ✌️

It's just the point where minorities even if they are doing wrong are the good guys and just because someone is white and God forbid is male the are either incompetent or evil. The lesbian couple did stick out like a soar thumb. We had plenty of black heros in movies in the past the only ones who seemed to care was the media, Wesley Snipes and Denzel Washington have a whole career behind being the hero even OJ ironically was considered a hero leading man. The thing that really gets me now is the know it all little kid that's infinitely smart than all the clueless adults as if that ever fucking happens in real life I wonder what propaganda Hollywood is pushing there.

The appeal of "Fargo" was about how a protagonist in the northern US, with its niceness and Scandinavian heritage, deals with the intrusion of psychopathic evil. Now we are looking at a gangster story about African-Americans vs. Italians, with Chris Rock in the lead and apparently told through the eyes of an "intelligent black teen". While this premise may or may not result in an interesting and well-made series, there is very little point to publish it under the label of "Fargo", and I think people are reacting to that. I will never know if it is worth watching, because I see no reason to try.

The season you’re talking about is consistent with that and I loved it. I honestly don’t get all the hate for S4 I enjoyed it. The storyline of the Rabbi becoming fully integrated into the Italian family, he took Satchel under his wing who turns out to be Mike Milligan from season 2. Chris Rock absolutely didn’t disappoint in a very serious role. The feud between the Cannons & Italians and the hilarious Miss Mayflower scenes. The escaped convict bank robbers was good & then Ethelrida winning Loy the war with the ring from Mayflowers house. Brilliant.

While season 4 has fundamental structural problems, it also ages like a fine wine. Every rewatch is enjoyable because the season is so jam-packed with storylines, that I could never fully recite what happens in the first five episodes. It goes south after that, because it fails to follow through with everything it has set up in those first five episodes (including weird things like Loy inventing the credit card, which I was expecting to be a storyline rather than just a punchline). While every scene of the season finale is very good, a 30 minute runtime is just trash, covid or no covid. They should have either cut episode 10 and 11 into one epic 90 minute showdown (which they didn't because they wanted to keep the montage at the beginning of E11 with all the deceased people, and it wouldn't be effective if it didn't include Odis or Gaetano. Plus, they wanted the cliffhanger of Ethelrida bringing the ring to Loy), or condense episodes 6 to 8 into only two episodes (especially E07 has way too little going on compared to the density of Eps 1 to 5). Regarding casting, I agree that Chris Rock is not up there, but Jason Schwartzmann was absolutely fantastic and held his weight in an arena full of amazing actors. Saying that Francesco Acquaroli should have been the boss instead feels like missing the point to me. Whatever Schwartzmann was supposed to be, he nailed it. I also want to mention that 10-year-old Rodney L Jones III did a more than adequate job in the (for a child actor) incredibly difficult role of Satchel Cannon. It ultimately was too ambitious and tried to accomplish too much in too little screentime, but in my opinion, that's a very honorable way to fail. And it gave us East/West - a product of that ambition - which is a clear contender for best episode of the entire show. Overall, I ended up preferring season 4 over 5. Season 5 fixes the major flaws of S4, but only because it ultimately attempted to do much less, acknowledging that the new writers room isn't up to the quality of the first 3 seasons. The clearest indicator for this is episode length. Season 5 has been rigorously cut to strict 45 minute episodes - except for the pilot, which also happens to be by far the best episode. No episode of season 5 comes even remotely close to East/West (Linda could have been it, but they blew their chance with stupid "it was just a dream"-writing), and besides E1, no episode of season 5 makes my Top 10 either.

But to find that it was an homage to one of my all time favorite characters on the show Mike Milligan. To all the people who are hating are just either trying to hard to criticize or just not a fan of this type of show. Prob one of the best seasons with all the quirky characters synonymous with this show. Don't listen to anyone and watch it for your self and don't make it about all the political correctness. People watch movies and TV to be entertained. If you watch show to criticize just go watch reality TV shows. Bravo loved this season. Screw all the haters

Even though I was trying to follow along hoping for Fargo easterr eggs and other similarities, I was still surprised by the slight twists in plot of an otherwise standard mob war. The only issue I had, initially, was the casting of Jason Schwartzman as Josto. But after watching the season again recently I truly believe the casting was spot on if you are supposed to NOT take him seriously. I originally wanted a more hard up badass type. But after my second watch I got the vibe that I wasnt supposed to take him seriously because of his character traits. He actually got an arch that made him a more seasoned boss. So you were supposed to think of him as a putz in the early stages just for him to become more assertive. Still wish they would have cast an Italian but I no longer have a problem with it after my second watch.

Tbh I didnt get that vibe of woke behavior from the script at all even with all the talk of race and unease, its the perfect time period to explore that side of american history and its not like its not an issue in that country. I love the opening scene where the show explains that these groups just showed up there on boats and that being american is like being religious, its a choice you make because it doesnt matter what generation you are. At the end of the day theres only one true group of americans left in that country and they're the natives, everyone else is just trying to figure out or fight over what it means to be an american when you're so far away from your true roots and culture

As most of you know: Prometheus was argued as an alien prequel. The film was so poorly received (objectively BAD) was because it had three writers. All 3 of them has different visions for the movie. The religious themes WERE meant to exaplin the opening scene, with the original alien we see sacrificing himself to create like on Earth originally intended to be “that guy.” That “main character” from that one extremely popular book. But that doesn’t end up making sense or paying off because each writer took the story in a different direction. That’s exactly why Prometheus wasn’t an alien prequel. It’s why you, dear reader, most likely thought it was a terrible movie. That’s what happens when three writers with totally different ideas write different parts of the same movie. It’s facts. Look it up if ya don’t believe me.

Typecasting Chris Rock or anyone for that matter doesn’t sit right. He did great in this season. Not perfect, but it was believable and refreshing. I’d say Jason Schwartzman was far less believable in his role, but still a good character flare overall. We see a lot of this happen these days and it’s often executed very well IMO. To name a few Brian Cranston in Breaking Bad, Adam Sandler in Uncut Gems and Jason Bateman in Ozark. For godsake Robin Williams in several movies like Insomnia. It’s always exciting to see actors break into more serious roles especially when their quirky or eccentric personality can pop in from time to time.

I felt like it worked. But I also was late to the party and was able to watch them all in a row. Every season seemed so absurd, this one wasn’t any different. The same with Schwartsman. He was completely ridiculous and I loved it. It seemed like they were trying to show us the roots of some of the absurdity in the show and movie and how absurd and random those roots themselves are. I think the big problem with Season 4 is the same problem Season 3 had. That is, a seemingly REQUIRED amount of stupidity among the characters. In season 3 both the Stussey brothers do incredibly stupid things. As does Ray's girlfriend. And having to watch Shea Whigham do an even dumber version of a crooked cop than he usually plays...UGH! In season 4, we're forced to waste so much time watching Otis go through his OCD routines, I was screaming "JUST SHOOT HIM ALREADY!" when his final scene was happening! I was also incapable of believing that this guy killed Deafy?! And I was so glad when the new head of the Kansas City mob pointed out how stupid Chris Rock was for thinking he could take on an international crime syndicate when he couldn't command the loyalty of the gangs that where his next door neighbors and his in-laws?! I wish the Fargo writers would stop acting like stupid characters weren't an inherent requirement along with the accents!

Its not just a mob war, its about the waves of immigrants and their turns as the underclass Though each eventually lost, by then they moved up and blended into respectability until the last hand over where things were curtailed and the Italians evolved the game. Satchel was rescued /given a ride by Joe Bulo (after they'd killed Schwartzman and character). Fargo often make a big deal of its backdrop of remote wilderness but most of the Season 4 was based in the confines of KC not Fargo!

hey, like number 300 here.. I need to track down all the crap about Fargo Season 4 I wrote and take it down. I'm one of the people who went on in detail about how it was woke - but I finally watched the whole thing today (including the first 2 episodes) and I have no idea why I ever came to that conclusion. Its not because everything as become super woke and this is somehow less woke. I don't even think about woke anymore because as someone who studied economics extensively, the invisible hand takes care of everything. People say Fargo Season 2 is the greatest - and how it all stacks up in Fargo season 4 is somehow the worse? No... Fargo is told from Odd episodes (the new , original, the now) the Evens are Lore of the Series - The best phases in my opinion- but not so much without the context. You're take on this made it even more clear to me - I like your channel and will probably be spending hundreds of hours watching your other stuff. Specific to your insights on mikes lack of focus (oh him) I can only say that the doors are wide open for a season 6 or 8 or 10 (older lore seems to be the even numbers) well we may have some more exploration on the character - we are talking about 2 decades (season 4 1950 season 2 1979-80) I'm thinking they did this on purpose to explore mike's rise to where he came from in season 2 (pretty high up). As for my bad review (on a few places- which I'm in the process of updating/deleting) - my cries of woke? I don't know ... What was going on when this was fresh to watch was like a psychological assault on me by all of the media for just thinking a different way about policies - it was a low time for a lot of people and I was used to identifying subtle manipulation (I guess hypersensitive at this point). That was no reason to cry woke - it's not - it's just genius - You point out the the flaws as I did in my head - you pointed out more than i thought about , and your Boardwalk empire mentions - you're just in tune with me. Season 4 seemed to be forced into a diverse narrative direction - which is great - if told well - I assumed it wouldn't be - Im gonna pick up on this because nobody's gonna read it but I wanna finish because as I now rewatch season 4, I rewatch this video - and I'll just keep on expanding this blabber - But I was in a different place in macro terms when i came to an initial conclusion like woke... no... it's a worthy successor of season 2 (with season 6 to hopefully follow in timepeace format)

It's not bad, but it "doesn't feel like Fargo" not only because those elements of chance and unpredictability are just sprinkled in here and there, but also because the core philosophical problem of the series - to sum up, man's relationship to truth and values, the power of lies and violence as means of altering our common perception of reality - is abandoned in favour of a more straightforward, traditional mob story. I also think one other big issue of the series (which has partly to do with Rock's casting issue) is that they try too hard to make every character charismatic and every dialogue epic and memorable, and it has quite the opposite effect. Almost every character often speaks in metaphors or suddenly goes on about a traumatic childhood experience or what have you and sometimes it really feels inappropriate for the context. A really big example of this is the dialogue between Calamita and Doctor Senator. It's supposed to be a strategic meeting but they rant on about babies in a box and black people and so on and at the end you're really left with the impression that they said nothing of actual substance. I also agree that the season has trouble handling all the different characters that it introduces. Ironically, the best characters are IMO the more intimate ones, who talk less but whose personality is to be derived from the subtleties of their behaviour, like Rabbi Milligan or Odis Weff: episode 9 is entirely centered around Rabbi and Satchel and is by far the best of the season, while Odis' story is very tragic and moving, and I personally would put the two characters up there with the best of the entire series.

fr that’s my take. just finished it, i didn’t see it as “woke” or “preachy” i just saw it as a piece of history in america. it wasn’t my favorite season but only because it didn’t really have that “Fargo” feel for me (i’m from MN)-not because it was a majority black cast like most of the ppl complaining

I think season 5 has the same problem as season 4. The first half is amazing and sets up so much, then it all just fizzles out. At least season 4 had East/West, but season 5 had none of that. I also think Roy Tillmann is a shit villain and trying to make viewers cheer for prison rape in the finale is... interesting, to say the least.

I disagree with you about Chris Rock playing the role of the mafia boss. I think that Rock did a good job playing such a serious dramatic role. He had the serious look and the presence of a man of power and influence. Not all mob bosses look and act the same. They have different personalities and morals and ways of running their organizations.

A man smacked Chris Rock in the face on national television, then sat back down as if nothing had happened. Ranter is right: Rock is NOT an intimidating presence. He's just not. Not his fault. He didn't cast himself. But let's be real. Ain't nobody smacking Big Dick Mayor Royce in the face. I guarantee you that.

You bringing up something that happened in real life vs him acting a role in a show??? Piss poor comparison 🙄. Chris is his 50s, not finna fight another 50 old mf on national television. Will smith the only one who looked like a fool. And know you wouldn't have done anything either, so cut the shit...

The complaints of wokeness stem from the fact that it came out at the same time as several other series and movies that were all about race and preaching to us about how racism is bad, as if anybody needs to be told that by Hollywood. Fargo the series was about quirky characters in intense situations. Suddenly with S4, it was about racism? There is a certain section of people in our society that get a dopamine hit whenever they see these racially divisive portrayals. But I agree the main problem is that it wasn't Fargo.

Not the best but definitely the lowest on the list for me, after a few watches, I think it gets better but I feel that it suffered from the Pandemic too, I’m really looking forward to the new Season however, it sounds like it’s going to be better written and it is also sent during the Pandemic times being the most modern so it would be interesting to see, nice reviews mate,

it's not as horrible as some people claim but it's nowhere near as good as the last 3 seasons. It has a good story but with the way social topics are handled in movies in particular race you could tell it was gonna be very hamfisted. Don't get me wrong I'm sure 1950s Kansas city was not the most tolerant or welcoming place for minorities and Jim Crow was in affect then but this was hamfisted. The actors did a good job but it could've been better
