These guys broke Joe's balls pretty good. "So the scene where you're blowing the security guard". The timing of that question was perfect, had me dying. Joe has been trying to financially capitalize off this role for as long as he could. Realistically most Sopranos actors had their biggest starring roles on that show.

My rebuttal to the first part of your thesis: Boardwalk Empire Buschemi was gangster as hell in that series.

Nope. Aj was wayyyyyyy worse. But Tonys casting was wrong. And youre right that the character was a bit off. And the choices made were rushed. But damnnnnn that aj was annoying

Commentary is 100% on point. Tony B/Steve Buscemi was among few the major immersion breaks in all 6 seasons. Tony B had all the clumsy trappings of an antagonist in a Coen brother’s comedy. It was jarring how out of place the character was.

Like Sherlock Holmes, Vincent Hanna took cocaine to keep himself sharp and focused. Like Moriarty, MacCauley had no personal attachments and was a genius criminal.

I thought Buscemi was an odd flex as a cast for Blundetto as well. Regarding his introduction, it came in Season 5 with Phil Leotardo, Angelo, Feech with the explanation they all were being released from prison. By that time, enough characters were killed in seasons 1-4, they needed some new ones. But as good as Sopranos was at casting, Buscemi was always a head scratcher to me.

I agree with you here. Buscemi definitely felt like a guest appearance and he just couldn't pull off the character even from a physical standpoint. On the other hand I thought his portrayal of Nucky Thompson in Boardwalk Empire as kind of a crook/politician/gangster worked because he was never portrayed as the tough guy. That's not him.

I hated the introduction of Tony Blundetto. Not only was it a waste of Steve Bucemi, but his character was the ultimate retcon and proved to be a bridge too far for believability in the show.

Outstanding video. The only thing I disagree with is the fact that his high IQ does not fit with his dumb decisions. In fact, I believe that it is quite common for intelligent guys to be unable to settle for a normal life in a way that leads them to just go crazy after a bit. Especially when they realize how brain does not get you very far in a world where it's the arrogant dumb mobster who gets the best deal. That said, there are so many inconsistencies in his character and you did an awesome job to bring them up

Yeah I mean he started or at the very least unnecessarily and extremely escalated the most violent and destructive mob war that we see throughout the approximate decade that the show takes place in so that’s a fair judgement.

Absolutely get the unearned character developments, but I'm pushing back on the "doesn't look like a mobster" part. Go look at photos of NY and NJ mobsters in 80s and 90s. Trying to fit each character in a stereotypical Italian mobster look is a mistake and low hanging fruit.
