I found this to be a wonderful display of aikido. Since most people break it into techniques and don't show the whole thing like in this video you get a lot of slack but if you have a understanding of the pattern you cover a lot of material that is like a goldmine in one video. Thanks for the contribution.

Aikido is not an "octagon" like martial art. Martial arts are always referred to as a last resort (aka a fight starting), everyone shits on aikido not knowing that the point of it isnt that its superior to any martial art, it has its benefits and weaknesses and its aware of them.

Saludos.

It's crazy how mma fighters think that they're the best, when really all they're good at is fighting in a ring or against one opponent, because that is exactly what mma is optimized for. I used to do muay thai, for example, and a mate of mine did Aikido. In my arrogance, I thought my system was better than his, so we had a sparring session. Let's just say, I learned very quickly to get VERY nervous about letting my wrist or ankles get anywhere near his hands. Even closing the gap was dangerous because the second I was in reach, I was in trouble. Aikido has a bad rep largely because there's a lot of mcdojos that don't teach it as a combat art, and stick rigidly to forms and drills because they think that's what Aikido is.

@@peterclarke7240Exactly. Thank you man, I've been looking for someone (or, well, someone alive, since Ljubomir Vračarević understood it pretty well) to just for once understand that if Aikido is taught properly it can actually be functional. I do have to say I am annoyed by the fact we never actually did proper Aikido, or Real Aikido, in my school even though my coach was 8th dan. An example of a McDojo that is. I got my black belt when I was 12... I was super frustrated that all I did was basically throw a bunch of kids around and get to experience 0 real effort, that I decided to leave the school and just go train at home with my brother. Unfortunately, I lack money and space, but hey, at least I get to do sparring with Aikido and prove a bunch of people wrong.

Ahhh.. I always really enjoy these. Not for the video content or entertainment value, but rather the opportunity to relish in the wisdom and musings of so many “masters” in the comments. Rarely will so many experts gather on one forum and share their expertise. Scribes take down every word, so future generations may benefit from their guidance. Doesn’t matter if the video portrays Segal, or Grand Masters who have dedicated their entire life to their art, we will all be warned to NOT be impressed. It’s through the criticism of others, that these keyboard masters try to convince us of THEIR expertise and importance. Well, I for one am humbled by their greatness and if they scoff at the lifelong accomplishments of any true master, because THEY are convinced that they are more accomplished after weeks of study, then that’s good enough for me and I bow to each of you. Thank you for setting us straight. 🎭

I love all the expert commentary from people who think they are martial arts experts. Technique demonstrations are not fights or sparing. I hold blacks in four different arts and a military career of a myriad of martial training. No art looks the same in the dojo as the street. Very few techniques work as in movies. Everyone defaults during a fight. I have seen people very well trained in various martial arts who cannot execute in a combat situation. I love the simple utility of jujitsu and I love the training in aikido. After 40 years I can pick and choose what I do, or how I use my skills. Working in a public school I have used aikido hundreds of time a year stopping fights and attacks without excessively hurting anyone or getting fired or arrested. It work and works well. If I need more aggressive techniques I have them. Most of you have very little idea what your talking about. Here's a clue - the more definitive you are, the more wrong you are.

Aikido at this level is no joke. What an amazing thing to watch. Long time ago I was used as a assistant prop by my "instructor" at a much lower level because of my size (stout) yet ability to flow with him and then take a fall. The trainee has to flow because If you don't flow you will suffer irreparable harm on the simplest of movements. The immense amount of pressure applied just to your wrists travels from your finger to your elbow then to your shoulder socket. In one moment you are tippy toe trying to prevent your arm from being destroyed to flying like in a car wreck to immediately slapping the mat because again the shear pressure is applied down your entire arm. LOL I have read comments where guys are like "I would sacrifice my arm being broken in an arm bar from a BJJ match" but this ain't that. Your arm socket ripped out, your elbow broken, you entire forearm turned into jelly, your wrist destroyed and your poor little pinky finger twisted out of socket. In a single "event". Not even talking about the ground impact where your ankles get broke because they hit the ground so hard, the broken ribs if he decides to kick, or knee you or the broken neck from the fist strike. There is a ton of very odd looking Aikido videos that unless you know what you are looking at it looks stupid. And some are for sure. But this ain't it. Look at this assistant's body being thrown around. Think what it would take for you to get that kind of velocity on another human body. And the instructor is not trying to hurt his assistant. Then there are videos of Aikido squaring off like in a competition. This is where it's not as effective if at all. In my most humble opinion Aikido is very well suited where you have "one shot" to remove the absolute life threatening attack like a knife, sword, bat, stick, gorilla punch. For me I think Aikido practice was the most amazing experience I have had in life. The serenity (we were a silent dojo), the flexibility you trained to achieve on every joint and muscle, the learning to fall, roll, recover then just learning the throws, locks, the ability to just fade away from the attack then bring in the momentum at just the right moment. And the tradition. It really is a beautiful style IMHO.

Real aikido is when the nage takes advantage of a real attack, this is no different than any aikido, except he's yelling, going very fast, and doing more atemi... I'll give him credit for the atemi, but the kiai is supposed to be louder and in their face. The problem he has is that he's not actually being attacked, aikido doesnt work unless you are being attacked.

All arts have their benefits...yes even Aikido. What most fail to realize is that in order to apply ANY technique first you have to stop the attackers thought process thereby his physical action...in that way the proper application of most techniques have a probability of actually working. 1. Block or evade 2. Cause pain by hitting soft targets 3. Maneuver to a position of advantage 4. Apply a takedown or immobilization technique 5. Run away

I can only assume you critics are ignorant about life in general, because if you had any life experience you would know that most arts do practice like this including BJJ and judo. If the student does not go along they will get something broken. MMA has a mixture of all the arts so picking on this one and doing a comparison to MMA is stupid. Most importantly none of you can ever have been in a real fight, in real fights the people are not stripped down wearing lycra shorts, there is normally a lot of posturing and grabbing from which any competent Aikido, BJJ, Judo or jujitsu exponent would be able to drop someone. I trained in Jujitsu and I see many similarities in these moves, Aikido is a defensive art and also a graceful one well worth the time to learn. But as most of you know nothing about any art other than being key board masters, you will continue with your ignorant perspective on everything in life.

The other thing they are missing is this: in a real fight an attacker will use his hands to try to grab or hit. An aikido guy can then grab the attacking wrist or hand or arm and do an aikido technique. This is especially true when a puncher leaves his arm extended. People forget that aikido can also be offensive. The aikido guy can make a move (grab, whatever) and do his thing. People also forget that aikido is actually a form of jujitsu. It's effective if done correctly.

Don't bother arguing with people bashing Aikido and claiming black belts, purple or whatever colours in BJJ and other modern martial arts. I have TONS of friends from BJJ, MMA, kickBoxing, Muay Thai, you will never hear them trash talking other people or other martial arts. My colegue right now it's an ex Muay Thai fighter and he's very content with Aikido. Also, most of the people bad-mouthing Aikido are immature. You will find many immature people in the amateur martial arts world. I remember that 1 week ago I found a local Krav Maga dojo video, the sensei of that place said that he's gonna teach people ''the real deal, not bullshit like others''. As a martial artist I'm interested in what you can do, not in what others can't do. Some are like the politicians, give me your vote because my rival did that and that and bla bla bla, not because he wants to do something for his country. Good video and good skill.

This all depends on the individual and how they were taught. Too many sensei teach superiority in their discipline, and this infects a students mind. Majority of people commenting on martial arts videos have been brainwashed by the UFC. They believe that if something doesn't work in the cage, it is useless. They are those that look to train in brutal styles of combat in order to make themselves better fighters. In my opinion all styles have a benefit to them. One however should not allow the path they choose to follow to become a double edged sword. This will only lead to your own destruction either spiritually or in some cases physically. Aikido commonly is a more peaceful art and when one becomes at peace with themselves they find no reason to fight. They avoid physical confrontations because they can diffuse a situation before it becomes physical. And in this aspect Aikido is a very valid system. "One cannot ascertain the perfections or imperfections of any chosen style if they refuse to see the value of all styles" --- Musashi

Anyone with half a modicum of intelligence understands that martial arts aren't a pissing contest. Competitive combat sports are not the be-all-end-all measure of a martial art's effectiveness. Every martial art was developed with a sparticular set of real-life contexts in mind and no martial art is good at every single situation, not even MMA which is specifically developed for a given set of rules in a controlled competitive environment.

....In "normal Aikido" or "real Aikido" - There is no such thing as "normal Aikido" or "real Aikido". All the students that learned closely from Ueshiba later formed their own styles and variations based on what they learned - Some softer, some harder, some even negated the Martial aspects totally and became a healing style. Believing that there is a normal Aikido style simply indicates that you have not yet evolved deep enough into the understanding of Aikido to comprehend the full spectrum of options within Aikido. - and in several styles it is common to resist enough that if the technique is no performed correctly then it stops - or for those having enough techniques in their body they can then transition into another technique.

The last one was even more fake. The stupid girl even ducks away from a punch completely behind her that she couldn't even see. HAAHAA!! That shit was stupid.

All I'm saying is I've never seen a legit video where Aikido has been demonstrated to be effective in self defense situations. Maybe some of the really basic stuff can be used like holds and stuff but it has been my experience that no unwilling opponent is going to let you grab their wrist and flip of their own accord. Also, catching someone's arm or fist in mid air is virtually impossible. It is especially impossible against someone who has even the slightest training in boxing. You are taught to never leave your hand out ever; Aikido demonstrations always show the attackers getting their punches supernaturally caught mid-swing and then the attacker just leaves their arm out there. They are always looping punches also and never a clean straight punch which makes grabbing the wrist or hand even MORE difficult to grab. I'm only commenting because if people keep peddling these moves as if it will save someone's life and it WON'T then it is literally killing people because they think their techniques work. Get people into a boxing, wrestling, or jiu jitsu class and you'll have done far more to save their life than this shit.
@HowlingMoonCinemas
@HowlingMoonCinemas 6 жыл бұрын
gsimon123 You have a point, but are still very wrong. These techniques are actually a lot like hapkido. They aren't really meant to catch punches, but to apply techniques when being grabbed by an attacker. Anytime someone grabs you on your body or clothes like your shirt (virtually almost anywhere), hapkido and aikido can be applied very effectively. When an attacker grabs a hold of some part of your clothing, let's say your shirt, around your chest, both aikido and hapkido have wrist and arm locking techniques that are amazingly effective. Both aikido and hapkido martial arts will use the clothing as a trapping device. By grabbing and pinning down the attacker's hand (who's hand is still holding on to your shirt) while at the same time grabbing over enough to grab some of your shirt, trapping his fist, you will then be able to apply a wrist or arm locking/breaking technique. Policemen have studied hapkido and aikido for years, because they are very effective and maintain control. Aikido is a defensive martial art. Wild punches that come in big swings are actually very easy to see and catch in both those martial arts. However, boxing has its advantages against aikido because boxers don't grapple and their strikes are meant to be more elusive to the eye. Aikido is mainly applicable against grappling and has few real striking techniques of its own. However, hapkido, especially kuk sool hapkido (the much better, more complete, older form of hapkido), has plenty of all classic Korean kicks and punches (not bullshit from watered down, flawed tkd), and the right kicks easily stop any boxer dead in his tracks. I personally have seen some very interesting street fights between "golden glove" boxers and mere amateur kickboxers. The kickboxers easily win because the boxer can't get inside, continuously gets kicked away in the gut and needs to square in very close to make an effective strike. From so much distraction by all the simple front kicks the boxer would end up taking blows to his face from the kickboxer's punches. And you can guess who gets knocked out. However, against average street thugs, boxing is a fantastic fighting style that truly works and I believe there are quite a couple videos out there that show how fast a trained boxer can knock out multiple attackers. Every martial art has its strengths and its weaknesses. It takes careful study to really come to understand where they all can be applied effectively.
