Ah yes, the return of the most missed character in Farland Story: reviving alcohol. But really, I'm glad you covered the finale. I've been keeping up with the Farland Story game reviews. A shame they didn't include the protagonists from from 6 and 7, but it's cool they had some prominent side-characters instead. The return of not-Indiana-Jones was cool. Despite the UI weirdness for converting the systems over to Windows, I'm glad that the actual challenge presented made this one fun to play.
@BasementBrothers

I think it's great that they gave the side characters their chance to shine! Many of them weren't even shown in the opening sequences in 6 and 7. Indeed, the return of the reviving alcohol was the best part! Thanks for watching, as always. :)

Honestly, I care less about the specific game than I do the information about the game and how it is presented. One commonality between all creators that do content like this is that the content is way better when the creator is passionate about the subject, so I'd say keep doing videos about games you're passionate about regardless of whether you think it might get a few less views.

Usually a lurker, but real talk just wanted to say that I'm very hopeful for the continuation! Your way of presenting content is half of the charm of this series for me, I kinda got used to these vids at this point and really invested. So It's a bit sad if we won't see the conclusion :(

You would have gotten more views if only the duck was in all 8. That said, it has been a pleasure watching this series of game videos and it is very confusing to me why your viewers wouldn't be on board. Keep creating this fine content, a new basement brothers is always a treat no matter the game.
@BasementBrothers

Ironically, I originally had the duck in the thumbnail for Farland 4 and it did terribly until I changed to a more orthodox thumbnail. "My viewers" seem to be generally on board, but sorry, to succeed on youtube you have to also court other random viewers, not just regulars. Thanks for watching the series, though!

I’ve really enjoyed the Farland videos FWIW. Unsurprisingly your presentation style helps make them interesting and ngl the worlds the games depict and their retro aesthetics really endeared them to me. Also, and this is just a consequence of my being a MIDI enjoyer, I’m a little sad knowing they had a whole new platform to explore and went with CDDA 😞

On this one I was totally ready to hook the Roland GS MIDI module up to the modern PC through USB and see what the MIDI sounded like vs. the built-in MIDI on my system, but alas it was not to be. Thanks for watching, as always, and thanks so for the support. It really helps and means a lot to me!

It seems strange that these would be the less viewed videos, since, like other commenters here, I come to KZbin for games I'm never going to play or don't know anything about. I never got why anyone wanted to hear someone talk about some NES game they've already played and a thousand others have already talked about. Personally, I played the two Farland Saga games, and started watching these because I knew they were related but don't have copies and never played any. I have a couple of working PC-98s, but not the space to set them up or the time to play all these games, and having you go through them all in order has been great.
@BasementBrothers
@BasementBrothers 7 ай бұрын
Awesome! Hope someday you have the space and time for some PC-98 funtime! Regarding the low views: I can often manage to sell a video about a game people haven't heard of with the right thumbnail and tagline. (My "The Scheme" video got tons of views!) Videos about sequel games tend to be a harder sell, in my experience, and definitely most people aren't gonna click on the eighth video about the same series.

Thank You for the Farland videos you have produced. At first, my impression of them was "vintage rpg maker games" with very nice Art covers, Posters, Floppy Discs/CD Roms and sometimes a Mouse Pad but it's grown on me with time as I could sense something authentic and charming about them. I'm glad you mentioned the Sega Saturn games (yes, 2 of them) as it gives me some hope that they'll get a fan patch someday (the Saturn Homebrew Community is pretty driven to get these translations done). Anyway, I look forward to seeing what other games you'll talk about as I think there's still quite a bit of "still safe for youtube" titles you can explore.

Ah the devs really made use of Win95s built-in UI features like scroll bars and pop-up dialogue boxes. Maybe it seemed modern in '96 or when the game was first released? Or maybe it was just that much easier. I dimly remember playing a Windows game or two in that style, with the choppy animations and everything, but it didn''t seem very enticing even at the time.

Man, that transition period to Windows 9x was *rough* on so many companies x.x - it really feels like there's this wonky mid90s period where everybody was just trying to figure out how to get things to work, followed by a slew of remakes in the late 90s. Menus in particular seem to be a large sticking point. It's a very interesting period and i wish it was more preserved, but given how interfaces like this shook out i understand why it's tricky - despite this game turning out ok in the end. You can sorta "feel" the porting frustration the creators must have been experiencing.
@BasementBrothers

Yeah, definitely. Can feel their pain. They talked about the growing pains when switching from PC-98 to Windows in the anime 16bit Sensation. Nowadays without nifty tools like dxwnd and Borderless Gaming this and many other early Windows titles are basically unplayable. This game can't even repeat the music tracks on modern Windows without something like dxwnd to emulate the early CD player protocol.

wow I can't believe this is the end of the farland series! (as least as far as coverage here goes) ... seems fun for the most part though the mechanics during battles seem kind of annoying I can't imagine why they did it that way. hope it gets a full translation someday I might have to at least try it!

I like the music in this one a lot. It's a little inferior to Saga 1/2's music, but it lays the groundwork for a more orchestral take on the series, Ichio's specialty. Isemura's boss theme and Ichio's main field theme are my favorites

That's a good point. This one does sound a lot more like the "orchestral" style I heard in Farland Symphony, and what I've played of Saga. Makes sense since this is where they switched to Ichio.

lol wth. A Flying city. A hero with magic flying pet. Intro. Lunar series stole it all. Even that Safkeel dude is a version of Ghaleon...

You mean that this game stole it from Lunar since that game is much older.

Ah, yes. You are right. For some reason i was sure Lunar was made after this game. But dates dont lie. So its this game which copycated the Lunar hehe.

As an RPG fan I'm the right audience for this, but I'm not sure "people who are fans of RPGs AND video game history jumping at the chance to watch videos of games for formats that weren't even released in their homelands" is a large audience... still, it was neat to see them to the ol' "call back to previous games for the big finale" trope, but I wonder why only the latest games were chosen? Mosy popular? Easiest to slot in? Or where they in fact designing those games with this games plot in mind?

From reading the story, it seems that at the very least they were planning on tying the games together in some way since the 6th game. They're still building to some big reveal even here in the 8th one, probably in the second Farland Saga game.

I understand why the PC-98 versions have minimal frames for animation, since those games can be played from floppy disk. But they are still decent given the hardware's limitations. The battle animations for this game seem a little worse, which is strange for a game of this era and platform.

That DVD drive looks like a standard 5.25" drive, you can probably flip it over to make it easier to insert a disc
