Making a profit whilst reducing emissions, addressing biodiversity and producing food can seem like an immense challenge. High input costs and concern for environmental impacts mean efficiency remains a central issue for farming and crofting businesses in Scotland. No farmer is expected to be an expert in all the issues facing the industry, but that’s where the Farm Advisory Service (FAS) can help.
Support is available for an annual carbon audit - open to all farming and crofting businesses - to help identify performance improvements and cost savings. Carried out by an experienced agricultural consultant and fully funded through FAS, the carbon audit shows you how your performance compares with others, highlights areas where you can improve operational efficiency and provides you with an action plan.
In addition, up to £2,000 of funding is available through FAS for specialist advice on two topics out of the 13 available advice options. This can include advice on business efficiency, biodiversity, habitat and landscape management, or climate change adaptation and mitigation. Whichever combination of grant funding you choose to pursue, your advisers will tailor the advice to your business. Funded advice can help you achieve the things that matter most to you, whether it’s reducing your carbon footprint, improving nutrient management, helping mitigate biodiversity loss or recovering your work-life balance.
Up to £1,200 is also available for Integrated Land Management Plans (ILMPs) to cover up to the full cost for businesses less than five years old and up to 80% for more mature businesses. ILMPs can help you take stock of your land and financials and provide personalised advice on how to make climate-friendly business decisions that will make your farm or croft more profitable.
Become part of the solution rather than just victims on the front line of climate change: www.fas.scot/advice-grants/
Scotland’s Farm Advisory Service (FAS) is funded by the Scottish Government, providing information and resources aimed at increasing the profitability and sustainability of farms and crofts.
