Knowing what is best for your farming business, biodiversity, and the climate can feel impossible. Farmers and crofters in Scotland are feeling the effects of climate change. In the last year, you may have dealt with flooding, massively reduced soil moisture, reduced grass availability, raised fire risk, and increased fly strikes to sheep. But there are clear options for farmers to be part of the solutions, not just victims, and these solutions can help farming businesses. Do you match your fertiliser and manure application with your crop or grass needs? Do you use breeding indexes when choosing your breeding stock? Have you got a strategy to improve your lambing and calving percentages? Are you testing your soils? No farmer is expected to be an expert in all the issues facing the industry, but that’s where the Farm Advisory Service (FAS) can help.
Up to £2,000 of funding is available through FAS for specialist advice on a range of topics, including biodiversity, habitat and landscape management, and climate change adaptation and mitigation. A qualified adviser will visit your farm and provide specific advice about how to improve your ecological status, journey towards sustainability, build resilience to extreme weather events, and reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
Up to £1,200 is also available for Integrated Land Management Plans (ILMPs) to cover up to the full cost for businesses less than five years old and up to 80% for more mature businesses. ILMPs can help you take stock of your land and financials and provide personalised advice on how to make climate-friendly business decisions that will make your farm or croft more profitable.
There is also support available for an annual carbon audit - open to all farming and crofting businesses - to help identify performance improvements and cost savings. Carried out by an experienced agricultural consultant and fully funded through FAS, the carbon audit will establish your carbon footprint, identify the sources of emissions on your farm, and show you how your performance compares with others - highlighting areas where you can improve your farm’s operational efficiency.

Scotland’s Farm Advisory Service (FAS) is funded by the Scottish Government, providing information and resources aimed at increasing the profitability and sustainability of farms and crofts.
